We don't really know what it means right now, but Saints Row is getting a "huge" combat overhaul in its next update, which is currently scheduled for a May release. This patch was actually announced last week, as developer Volition outlined the game's roadmap through to August.
Although said roadmap did mention a "combat overhaul", it's now clear that this is supposed to be a reasonably big deal. Again, we don't have any details to go on yet, but we do have a teasing tweet that shows some new takedowns (we think?).
It'll be interesting to see just how in-depth this "overhaul" is. "Smoother" action is also mentioned, so maybe certain animations and prompts are being redesigned as well? We'll have to wait and find out.

Despite flopping critically & commercially, it is nice to see them supporting the game for the people who did get it.
Too bad they can’t also update the bad story.
Love the series, cheesiness included. Will pick it up come May.
I got this and while it wasn’t horrible, it wasn’t great either. So I put it aside for other games in my backlog. Anxious to see how much better it is after this patch.

I’m kind of looking forward to giving this a try once everything is released. Glad the game sounds like it might be a bit improved once I do.

This was awful, even though I'd seen it flopped I gave it a shot, and yup it was awful, bad characters bad writing and looks awful?? Like early ps4 gfx I had to make sure a few times I didn't get wrong game.
But nice to see they still got some commitment to it, won't help but good on them

I’m always confused when people complain about the writing and characters in the new saints row, because they’re pretty much the same as it’s been in the previous games but then I remember it’s probably code because screaming WOKE!! just tells everyone you’re an *****
Great game. Easily the best since 2. Shame about the hate it gets.
I played through it and the whole time I just thought "wow I wish I was playing 2,3,4 instead of this".
Not 1 though that game is terrible in different ways.
@HeeHo Lol, I was going to comment the same thing. While an overhaul of combat is obviously welcome, the story will still be lame.
@sonicmeerkat 1 was infinity better than 4 because technically 4 is only Saints Row in name. It has nothing to do with the previous 3 games because it's nothing more than a superhero simulator where driving a car is entirely optional.
I actually really enjoyed this game.
This game has a full VR mod on PC (with motion controls) so I might actually pick it up eventually. Gonna wait for a deep sale though, $5 or so should do it.

Either that or free with PS+, whichever happens first.
