Few PS5 updates released this year will prove more important than patch 1.02 for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Out now on Sony servers — so you needn't worry if you are picking the game up this Friday — it's turned what was a great game with numerous technical flaws into a simply excellent one. Before you begin playing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (whenever that may be), hit that Options button first and check you're at least using version 1.02.
You see, there's a night and day difference between what will be available on PS5 launch day and what we were playing for the vast majority of our review process. Running on version 1.01, the Jedi: Fallen Order follow-up suffers from an absurd amount of screen tearing — especially in the game's large hub world — and a frame rate that finds it impossible to stay near a 60 frames-per-second target. It was a real disappointment since the game itself is so good, as explained in our Star Wars Jedi: Survivor PS5 review.
However, the former was wiped out completely and the latter substantially lessened by update 1.02, released less than 24 hours before our verdict hit the home page. The game's 1440p Performance Mode now offers a significantly smoother experience, making exploration and combat even more of a joy. It really is a night and day difference when compared to the technical flaws we had to put up with prior. It's certainly not a locked frame rate, but the game is now in an acceptable state following the patch released so late in the review process.
Of course, since this patch is already up for download, your copy will automatically download the update. Since this was a "Day 0" patch, there may be another day one patch on the way this Friday that improves performance even more. Nevertheless, when you start playing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS5, just take a quick peek at the game tile's information tab to make sure you've got the latest version.

Just pre-ordered this morning. Absolutely loved the first game, but with so much coming out this year I wasn’t sure if Jedi Survivor would be a good investment. Thanks for the excellent coverage
So if you play without Internet your stuck with the first version?
@ROTTIEMAN16 never really thought about that. I guess you would be.
Looking at other reviews it was really bad primarily on PC and PS5. It's still a bit up in the air to what extent the technical problems are fixed, as the accounts differ greatly. I suspect waiting for tech analysis on the game would be wise.
The first game released with a ton of technical issues as well and took a while for it to get fixed. This is definitely one where it's like they're repeating history here and ESPECIALLY if you're an early adopter, you're taking a pretty big RISK. May be worth a wait lest you risk tarnishing your enjoyment of the game simply because it's just another title released not polished.
I mildly enjoyed the first game but I think a lot of that was because I only paid like half price for it I waited merely because it seemed like there was enough design problems, setting aside the technical stuff, that just felt like it would be tedious over time. That it was, but for like 20 bucks I can deal with a little tedium more than buying this full price day one.
The same seems to be the case here where I feel like I'd be pretty disappointed paying full price for this game especially when they doubled down on some of the design decisions that basically make exploration pointless. Unless you enjoy exploring a map so that you can have a different style of facial hair....
@ROTTIEMAN16 Well the disc doesn't even have the full game and it requires a download of the rest so no internet players won't be playing this.
@KundaliniRising333 The exploration is only pointless to you not everyone else. Jesus there's no winning with Gamers, if they make cosmetic DLC its bad because "it used to be unlockable content we earned" but if its unlockable content we earn its "not meaningfull and pointless".
Removed - flaming/arguing
@WallyWest I think you misunderstand me it's not the fact that I am upset with how Cosmetics are unlocked I think Cosmetics are absolutely stupid in a single player narrative driven game. You couple that with exploration having no game play reward aside from cosmetics and it's beyond stupid it's a literal disappointment. I do get that some of the side content rewards you with a skill point so that you can you unlock the skill tree nonsense, but I would have loved actual upgrades to gear, lightsaber stuff like that.
It's just my opinion, but it was a huge let down to have such a pointless feeling reward for the tedious backtracking in the first title. I very much prefer meaningful gameplay rewards versus cosmetics. One has weight, the other feels like an insignificant and half baked add on. I felt the same way about Ghost of Tsushima's cosmetics.
If they added meaningful exploration rewards in a game like this, which exist in nearly every metroidvania designed game, this game would be catapulted to true greatness in my opinion.
Amazing news. CANNOT wait for this.
@ROTTIEMAN16 No, you cannot play without internet, because on disc is incomplete game. Say "Thank you" to EA for this robbery!
Definitely sounds like this game is coming in very hot. Thankfully it sounds like they will land the plane fine but imagine if they didn't delay it when they did. Might have been a different story we would be reading.
@KundaliniRising333 I agree. The first game is okay and markedly overrated. It had some fun moments but much of it felt like a slog. With my backlog, it's going to be hard for me to put the new one anywhere near the top of my priority list.
It reminds me of Days Gone when that was really buggy during the review phase, sadly it didn't get enough of an improved patch before the scores came out.
@AdamNovice Doesn't it seem the opposite though. The majority of the reviews have completely ignored then technical issues despite Many still being present, and instead given it rave reviews. Despite the game apparently being yet another completely broken pc release, and laden with crashing, audio, and framerate issues on Ps5 even post a patch released so late that most reviews were done and written far before the patch.
It's more bizarre to me that most of the scores aren't lower because of that. it absolutely should be a days gone situation in my opinion for continuity alone.
@KundaliniRising333 Its simple critics weren't with fussed Days Gone anyway while they love Jedi Survivor despite its issues. Most find if they like or love something enough its generally easy to overlook or not care for its issues, funny enough Destructoid said if not for its technical state they would have scored it a 10 instead of the 9 they gave it.
I mean look at Pokemon Violet and Scarlet they're even now still broken buggy games with poor performance yet the highs for it are so high for me i class it as one of the my favourite entries. I don't excuse the big issues but at the same time i like the game so much i've gone past the point of caring about them.
@doctommaso
I agree. Not finished yet but my reason is mostly no fast travel. Backtracking is a pain because they don’t add much so I’m constantly playing through sections I’ve already completed. Annoying as heck.
@WallyWest yah I that makes sense. A great overall impression can go a long way in overlooking technical issues.
I think it's harder for me to jump in sometimes. It creates a little bit of a barrier of Entry is all my issue is really. Like I want to play the game for sure but do I want to pay 70 bucks or pre-order or adopted day one when if I wait a couple months it might be more polished you know, that's kind of where I stand on it.
With this game specifically I was 80% sure I was going to pick it up on release but now even though it has mostly glowing reviews and everybody seems to have a decent overall impression of it I'm going to wait months or even possibly for a discount at this point. simply because I just don't like the trend of where games released unpolished and I don't necessarily want to play simply out of fomo she'll lung out 70, when if I wait a little bit I might be getting the best overall experience at the very least if that makes sense.
@ROTTIEMAN16 the disc is just a key, so you’ll need the internet regardless. The download is 147 GB, or it was when I installed mine. That being said, the screen tearing blew my mind. Truthfully I’ve rarely noticed screen tearing but holy hell this was absolutely front and centre. Glad to see they jumped on it!
@ROTTIEMAN16 In fairness most games have a Day 1 patch these days, it's not unusual
@Skratm yeah but the disc version of the game should be playable without patches not be a mess or why have a disc version.Imagine not having the ability to update the game.....
@KundaliniRising333 No harm in waiting a month or two where it should be in a better state and may even see a discount.
@ROTTIEMAN16 The disc version is unplayable full stop without downloading the rest of the game that has the patches built into the download.
@TeapotBuddha I I'm not referring to the pre patch level of u polish. I'm referring to the issues that still remain.
This is nearly identical now post patch to what it was with the first game and that took them a month or two I think maybe even longer to release a patch that fixed it and then I think they released the PS5 upgraded version which still wasn't that much better if I remember right and that was several months later or more either way yeah I want to play it in the best possible state it can be so I don't mind waiting a little bit.
Which makes the Disc version more useless in the future than it is already.
Don't really want to pay full price as this game will eventually end up being dirt cheap...so I will just rent it for now
That's unacceptable, a game of that level shouldn't need a day one patch never mind a day zero one.
I really don't understand Publishers and their desire to keep impacting full price purchases.
I really want Redfall, and this(a shiny NEW game), and Dead Island 2, but I'll wait for patches first. After 2-3 months of patches the game will be complete, will definitely be cheaper, and most people are going to buy cheaper and not full price if they can.
I'll never forget Days Gone director complaining about a lot of "not full price purchases"- well ya.....
Thanks for sharing! Good to know there's alot of patches.
@ROTTIEMAN16 Unfortunately that's the future we're living in and are heading towards.
@PhantomMenace84 Yes, it is upsetting to have version 1.0 on disc, and additional content to download, while you are still able (technically) to play core game. But it is unacceptable to have incomplete software on disc.
The Game Collection despatched Survivor yesterday and I received my copy 11am this morning. Installed it, but I haven't had time to play it yet. There's no patch 1.01 or 1.02 on Sony's servers as this article suggests. I'll try again tomorrow.
A lot of sourness in the comments about an update to a game lol
My version is 1.000.002, no patch available and it has definitely tearing in the opening minutes when looking around using performance mode.
I booted it up. HDR is completely broken. My version is also 1.000.0002. Disappointed.
@TheKurgan yes it is ,absolute joke ,if you go into ps5 settings and ramp up hdr settings to max on all 3 ,then jedi hdr settings 20 on brightness and 5 on black ,it kinda fixes it ,im not playing it until its fixed
@tallythwack That's what I did originally, but you only have to adjust the last black calibration. I have LG OLED on HGIG. First calibration just past barely visible so that the image disappears, same for second and the third black one needs to be barely visible.
Can you please update this article or delete it? Because nothing that it says is true. There is still screen tearing and poor performance present in the game.
I’m running version 1.02 and I’m still seeing pretty bad screen tearing on performance mode. Fidelity mode is a frame rate night mare as well. Not sure if this article is as accurate and it claims to be
