Raf Grassetti, the former art director at God of War team Santa Monica Studio, has today announced he's joining Netflix to help create "a new original IP AAA game". Working with the likes of Joseph Staten (Halo), Jerry Edsall (Shadowrun, Gears 5), and Chacko Sonny (former executive producer of Overwatch), the developer will "bring a new world to life".
On Twitter, Grassetti writes: "I’m happy to announce that I’ve joined Netflix to develop a new original IP AAA game. I'm really excited to build a team and to work with the amazing Joseph Staten, Jerry Edsall and Chacko Sonny to bring a new world to life." He continues: "Making games is what I love to do and I'm not going away anytime soon."
Throughout his career, Grassetti worked on Mass Effect 3 as a character artist before joining Sony for Guerilla Games' PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall. He's also credited on CounterSpy and The Order: 1886. Upon leaving the firm, he said: "Sony has been my second home, and I'm immensely grateful to be involved so deeply with God of War. The skills I've learned, and the deep connections I've formed with incredible people will stay with me forever."

Wonder if this has anything to do with the RPG Zack Snyder was said to be making for his one new movie.
Hopefully it see the light of day and doesn't get cancelled in 2 years.
Wish him the best seems like a waste though. Has netflix released any games and if they did what systems?
First Joseph Staten and now him. What is Netflix planning?
@STOBO. Right now Netflix has about fifty mobile games that you can access for free with your subscription. They are all ad free and without micro transactions. I think eventually you are supposed to be able to play them on your television using your phone as a controller. Most of them are your typical mobile fare, although Oxenfree and its sequel are available. This seems like a lot of talent though for another mobile game. They must have something bigger planned for the future to bring awareness to the platform. I hope we eventually see it, but I have doubts.
Netflix said a couple of years ago they wanted to get into gaming. So they're finally picking up speed with this. They need a second stream of income, so gaming makes the most sense.
I'm just grateful it's not the GameFreak gig he so desperately was eyeing up. The world is not ready for those Pokemon........ lol
@AverageGamer MS said they wanted to be the Netflix of gaming. Now Neflix is saying nope. Or trying to. They want a piece of the Game Pass/Luna pie. They have the market size to do it, but we'll see if they have the know-how or the market interest to do it.
Luna pie. If it's like Moon Pies, I'm now hungry.
@BeerIsAwesome I don't think anybody's ever criticized the artwork in those games. If he were a writer, though he'd be better off omitting those details...
@Stevemalkpus ok cool thanks for the info I'll check them out see what they got going on
Netflix = mediocrity with an ideological gravy.... Thanks but no thanks.
Yeesh, hope the paycheck was worth it though
Welp good luck, if things don't make Wednesday/Squid Games numbers Netflix axe them to hell because they are losing subscribers for a lot of stupid decisions outside the series (RIP Horizon series too LOL).
Gotta say that Netflix team is getting some good talent. I wish him well.
@NEStalgia The thing is that I would expect Netflix to start small with more indie titles. Developing more unique stuff like Oxenfree since they own the studio. But it seems that they are jumping straight into the deep end... These aren't some small no name developers. They are some big names with some pedigree behind them.
Hopefully Netflix knows what they are doing. Game development isn't cheap, and they aren't exactly in a good financial position. Considering that they like to cancel stuff after one season if it aint an instant hit. The price of development has scared off giants like Google.
Anything netflix makes will not be a Playstation 5 or xbox game.
@AverageGamer I think Netflix problem is Amazon. That's their real biggest competition, that and Disney. Amazon is going in deep with tomb raider and I'm thinking Netflix doesn't want too risk getting left behind. Even if it loses money it at least keeps one finger on the trigger in case that's where it matters. They can't spend like Amazon can though....
@NEStalgia I mean... Amazon has already left Netflix behind. Amazon had already had their hands in multiple big game development, and they are published/publishing Lost Ark and Blue Protocol.
@AverageGamer right, it makes sense that Netflix would try something like this to try to keep up even if it's much lesser scale.
@XenonKnight While true, PS5 and Xbox owners will be able to stream the Netflix games thru the console app.
