Falcom, the Japanese company behind the Trails and Ys games, has published its latest financial report — and it makes for positive reading if you're a Western fan. The report (as spotted by @AvengerMags and verified by Noisy Pixel) shows that the developer is in good health, and that its financial position has been bolstered by Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure.
The two RPGs were recently released for the first time here in the West. Zero launched in September last year, while Azure dropped just a couple of months ago, in March. However, Falcom says that both titles actually exceeded sales expectations, which is great news for everyone involved.
The Trails series has gained a lot more traction in territories outside of Asia in recent years, largely down to the release of the Trails of Cold Steel games on PS4. With NIS America on publishing duty — and with two more Trails titles coming this year — it's fair to assume that the property will continue to increase its influence.
Whether down to its relatively small size or its more traditional way of operating, Falcom has long been a Japan and Asia-focused company. But now that its products are pushing notable profit from overseas sales, we can definitely see the developer expanding its business. Who knows, the days of waiting years for the latest Falcom titles to come West may soon be over.

This such amazing news to see. It took a while to get noticed, but glad to see Falcom titles are finally getting the attention they so rightfully deserve.
Well deserved. I'm hoping that one day they can up the funding and take a bit more risk like Capcom did with MH World. On the other hand, I also think they're kind of ok as it is so long as they can continue.
@BeerIsAwesome I could see it, eventually. The original Tokyo Xanadu was developed in part as a way to get the ball rolling on the game engine that would power Cold Steel 3, 4, and Reverie.
We know Falcom's working on Ys X right now, and the next Trails game will be in development, but depending on its forecast for the next few years, I wouldn't be surprised to see it squeeze a 'smaller' project in there somewhere.
Great news!!!! Played zero and completed it and instantly moved on to azure. I understand why many consider the crossbell arc to be the best in the series as it all just works. Characters are awesome and the building of lore is perfect. I started my legend of heroes journey with cold steel 1 and have loved every game since and many missing pieces of the wider story now makes sense. Can't wait for reverie later in the year. My biggest hope is that we get a trails in the sky remaster on current consoles. Know there are issues around this but make it happen falcom!
I don't think it's thanks to the PS versions. Every youtuber and their mother was saying to avoid the PS4 version, even if it was perfecly playable, just that Switch got some extra love from NISA.
Great to see. I've bought both and finally playing through Zero now (about halfway through). Absolutely an amazing game with unmatched characters and lore.
@Bingo-Bongo if anything it would need to be a remaster/remake as trails in the sky came out in jp 2006 and wasn't brought to the west til 2011 . I don't see it happening tbh . I'd rather they focus on newer titles, even zero/azure was pretty dated ; as much as I enjoyed it
@Sil_Am there's not a lot if difference between switch and PlayStation version tbh apart from light graphics upgrade. I played ps4 version , no issues
@johnny30 I know.
Well this is good to hear, they’re like a million times better than the Cold Steel games for starters!
The only one I played (Trails from Zero) was an utter masterpiece. I loved it from start to finish. Im glad their second chance, paid off. And I look forward to continuing with the franchise
You love to see it. The Trails series is just pure turn based RPG greatness. There's really not a bad game in the bunch!
Great news!
Now, more turn based JRP! keep them coming
I just started Zero based on word of mouth and I have to say the storytelling and the world is top tier like wow. I haven't been pulled into a story like this since the PS1 days.
If they want to make Falcom more mainstream in the West, they need to bring more of their game releases the same or close to the Japanese release. They can't just rely on Asian territories for most of their sales. Take current-gen consoles seriously. The Trials series is way far behind Ys in the West.
And I bought them twice
This is quite excellent news to hear, thanks for sharing with us!
Trails in the Sky series now please....
