Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora looks to be a dream game for fans of James Cameron's popular sci-fi movies. In this new gameplay overview video, it appears to be channelling Far Cry, though of course with an Avatar skin, and we've come away pretty optimistic.
Playing as a Na'vi who was captured and trained by humans as a child, you emerge from cryosleep 15 years later and must learn to fit back into the world. The game is a first person action adventure that lets you parkour through the trees, form bonds with Na'vi tribes, and even fly your own customisable alien bird. The scale of the open world looks impressive, and just as lush and vibrant as the films it's based on.
We also got a release date — you'll be soaring through Pandoran skies from 7th December 2023. What do you make of this one? Tell us in the comments section below.

It reminded me a lot of Horizon, which is a very good compliment!!
Its basically FC: Avatar and as a FC fan i'm not happy with that choice as that formula is beyond stale now. Visually its saved by the art design of Avatar's universe because visual fidelity wise i thought it looked very last gen. Overall was excited prior to the footage but now i'm not fussed.
Oh great... it's farcry with an avatar skin.
Pass.
I’m perfectly fine with it being Far Cry in the Avatar universe. Those games, while never amazing, are always lots of fun.
I was impressed by the coop feature. Looks fast and agile with flying unlike far cy so I don't see the comparisons. Hopefully the world is not bloated and visuals and dialogue are good (they looked ok).
I wonder if the voice over text was the first field test for Ubisoft for script written by an A.I.. Cringe as hell and bears the cynicism you'd expect from Ubi.
Anyway, gameplay-wise this looked solid. And as a HUGE fan of the movies, I will keep an eye on this.
this really does look and feel like a Avatar skinned Far Cry. Loved 3 and 5, hopefully this will be good
Love Far Cry, love the universe. Bring it on. I'm interested.
It looks good. It looks really good. But I just can't get excited about first-person games.
I am so happy with that release date. I love the Avatar movies and this is my most anticipated game this year. But is it just me or are games getting worse and worse looking this gen? Some of the graphics in the trailer looked very last gen to me. I don’t know if I’m expecting too much (or if it’s because I’m currently playing Gollum… 👀) but I can’t remember the last time a game blew me away visually.
Been pretty excited for this since the first trailer, I like Farcry and I like the Avatar movies so… roll on December.
Looks cool, but never saw Avatar, so don't know. I doubt it would take me long to figure things out. So maybe...
What is the difference between Far Cry games and other FPS-style games? All the bros like CoD and whatnot...but Far Cry is crappy because...??
This would have been so much better as a 3rd person game, but what are you gonna do? It's Ubisoft 😅
Avatarcry. Not what I think fans wanted. At all.
@Ashcrapper 3 & 5 - sir you have good taste!
£114.99 for the Ultimate Edition is insane…I’ve not seen anyone charge that much for any new release. Prices stepping into Collectors Edition territory now.
@Nem if you was expecting more you only have yourself to blame
@GorosBat splinter cell, assassin's creed and the division all third person
@Toot1st What do you mean? I was expecting third person action and shooter. You know... like the movies? I don't think it was a crazy expectation. I don't care for first person games so... splat. I did try Farcry primal and bounced off it pretty fast so this is not for me.
Not like i cared too much. I was hoping it could be interesting. It's not. Moving along. I got plenty of other stuff to play.
@Toot1st What’s your point ? I’m saying that I think this would be better suited to 3rd person.
The lack of genuine originality in games and movies these days no longer shocks me. Maybe they should avoid sequels, prequels, spinoffs, movie-game tie-ins and try something new? They've been doing the same thing for so many years now, it's seriously boring. We live in a no risk society nowadays. Don't say the wrong thing, don't do the wrong thing. Don't make the wrong game, don't make the wrong movie. Just give everyone what they want. But, erm... You can't! Everyone's not going to be satisfied! Be bold! Be original! No more superheros or dead franchises, but err... you know, hmm... Err, new stuff? (Real new stuff) I know, I sound like an old person but actually, even a lot of younger people are starting to feel the same. JOIN ME PEOPLE!!! Lol, only if you want (but you probably don't care)
To give everyone some perspective, I enjoyed the first Avatar. I'm a pretty big J. Cameron fan so yeah. Plus the 3D back then kinda blew me away (bought a 3D TV lol) but it's been so long even people like me don't care about new Avatar movies or games. Sorry Mr. Cameron. Please move on. You gave us The Terminator, Aliens and T2 (and so much more) but while we understand what you're trying to do with these Avatar movies, we just don't care anymore. Sad but true I know. Guess we're a fickle bunch but heaven help those who ignore their audience.
@Rich86 people don’t care about Avatar yet the sequel just almost made 2.5 billion at the box office lmao come back and join us in reality my guy
I'm living in reality with everyone else but when you consider that the Marvel Universe has made countless billions without offering any real originality, why should we pretend that these movies are catering for anyone but the lowest common denominator? Too many people are so easily entertained, but where is the food for the soul? Surely I'm not wrong? The 'Avatar' crowd were hoping for something that would blow their minds like the first movie and went to see it (hence the huge box office) but that doesn't mean it was as good. Am I wrong?
P.S. Three more Avatar movies after this? Sorry but no. Done after the first. Maybe if things were different in Hollywood generally then ok but all the studios are doing the same thing (lack of originality). Please, please, please move on. Don't take our word for it though.
I feel compelled to mention that J. Cameron always had a flair for visually stunning images in his movies but that doesn't mean that a visually stunning movie is necessarily a great movie. The novelty does wear off you know.
As a J. Cameron movie fan I am almost expecting at least some others like myself to agree but maybe they're too busy watching T2 or something lmao X-D
Correction, expecting that some others like myself 'might' agree...
I really don't want to sound deluded or out of touch. Can't we all just agree that Hollywood generally doesn't have a f*****g clue what we would like to see these days? They're so scared. It's more than a little pathetic if I'm brutally honest. Maybe my sincere honesty is more than some can take but I'm just trying to express an opinion that I feel many might share.
I’m also not too thrilled with this being first person. I just don’t like that perspective. There are some FPS that I was able to enjoy like BioShock, Borderlands, Skyrim, but that was despite the first person perspective rather than because of it. It was a large part of why I couldn’t get into Cyberpunk 2077. But I realize this is just mostly a personal preference and I’m probably in the minority.
I'd probably like this if it wasn't Avatar. At least let us play as the humans with the cool mechs! I don't care about all the heavy handed environmental stuff. I play video games to escape our inevitable climate doom.
@Th3solution I get that about 1st person, but you kinda have to admit that it fits well with the basic idea of how avatars work, tho!
I don't really care for either film for a small number of reasons but if others find meaning and enjoyment therein or in this game, good for them. They could certainly do worse.
@Wormwood23 Yeah, that’s a good point about the first-person viewpoint fitting the theme of being an Avatar. I hadn’t thought of it that way!
@colonelkilgore @freddquadros I am very tempted to buy this day one, but will be waiting for reviews first. So far I am impressed though.
@Th3solution @Nem @GorosBat @Enuo Also usually not a fan of first person games, but I loved the first two movies so will be giving this a chance.
@ItsBritneyB_tch December truly is the perfect timing. Avatar 1 & 2 both released in December, and it's also Christmas season.
I could totally see alot of kids asking Santa or their parents/guardians for it.
Loved FFVII on PS1 but was one of the few who was bitterly disappointed by Remake Part One. Won't be bothering with any of the others. Actually p****d off that I wasted my money on that game if I'm honest. Nothing else here that interests me. Guess the gaming industry is going the same way as Hollywood. No originality and no great new games. Why oh why did I buy a PS5?!? Seriously beginning to wonder. I might give up on gaming altogether soon if things carry on like this. No hope in this miserable world that is determined to destroy itself and now even gaming isn't even a happy escape anymore. Guess we're all living in the universe's biggest dumpster fire. Sorry for the wake-up call. Actually not sorry, just deal with it, life just makes me feel so bitter towards everything these days. Does anyone feel the same? Why do we bother eh?
