We've seen some confusion online with regards to the frankly massive changes coming to Cyberpunk 2077 with the release of its Phantom Liberty expansion this September. In case you haven't heard, developer CD Projekt Red is overhauling huge swathes of the existing game. It's changing skill trees almost completely, adjusting how cyberware works, making major improvements to combat, remaking the police system, adding new missions, and much more. Based on everything we know, this is basically going to be Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 — or perhaps 3.0, if you count the PS5 release as the second step.
Anyway, the game's come under fire from disgruntled fans following all of this news, primarily because some people think these improvements are going to be locked behind Phantom Liberty, which is a paid expansion at £24.99 / $29.99. But that simply isn't the case.
This major update, which contains all of the base game overhauls, will launch separately from Phantom Liberty (although it sounds like it'll actually release at the same time). CDPR confirmed this quite a while back, but for whatever reason, it seems to have been glossed over in the apparent outrage. So, even if you don't plan on buying the expansion, you can still hop back into Cyberpunk 2077 with all of its improvements in place, once the patch drops.
This plan's been reiterated by content creator and streamer @TheSphereHunter, who'll be voicing one of the new characters in Phantom Liberty. "All of these changes are also coming in the base game, it’s not just in the expansion. The entire game has been redone with this stuff," she writes at the end of a Twitter thread that's well worth reading if you want to know more about the aforementioned improvements.
Are you looking forward to playing through Phantom Liberty? Or maybe you'll be starting a fresh Cyberpunk 2077 run thanks to the update? Book a holiday in Night City in the comments section below.

Cancel the riots.....
I'm gonna have not one second of spare leisure time this winter....
let's call it Cyberpunk 1.0.
Beta testing is over.
Aight imma actually finish the game then. I fell off of it after a few hours when it first released so I’ll jump back in.
I hope when I jump back in I remember how to play it. It's been awhile.
Might play the original campaign again with these improvements. It was great after the original ps5 upgrade.
Might actually replay it once the update release just to see how much has changes since release
I've not started Cyberpunk yet, but picked it up last black friday. Sounds like i should wait until this drops in that case
I'll wait for the "complete" edition that includes all of the DLC.
Nice! I'll finish my second playthrough when it drops. Then jump into the dlc next summræer or something.
This is massive a relief.
I hadn't seen any gamer outrage based on assumptions online this week. Glad to know the world is still turning.
Nice about the improvements to the game too.
I certainly enjoyed my time with the game a couple years back, that said it always felt like the campaign kind of just sputtered out and randomly told me that I was doing the final mission and felt like it was very anticlimactic. So I’ll check it out after to see if it sits any better
30 bucks for an expansion? Just how long is the main story? If they focused mainly on copy pasting their 3 side quest types over and over this is not worth the price at all.
@thejoesenone I don't usually do that, but having refunded the game back at launch, in this case I think I will.
I played this day one. I had a few hard crashes and the occasional quirk, but what I experienced was absolutely nothing like what I saw in my time playing Redfall. Crashes, freezing in mid-air, multiple items floating in the air, many instances of NPCs stuck in T-poses, quest-givers spawning their doppelgänger (floating in space doing a T-pose no less). Was the removal of Cyberpunk from the PS Store fair or justified, especially given the state of games such as Redfall? Perhaps not.
In summary - my experience of Cyberpunk at launch wasn’t that bad, it sounds better now, enjoy.
Even the Preview article here made it sound like the changes to the base game were part of the expansion, not just a universal patch. Wherever the confusion started it perpetuated through pretty much everything Phantom Liberty related.
@TBubs311 That's kind of my issue with the campaign as well. It always felt like it was supposed to be longer, at least with Phantom Liberty it will feel better with its length.
Suzi's voicing a character? That's awesome, i love her voice and it will be great hearing her in the game.
So, still no third person. That’s a shame, with the insane amount of armour and clothing this game can offer.
Time for a seventh playthrough.
A vocal minority of gamers relying on hasty assumptions, becoming outraged, and not seeking confirmation first (despite being chronically online and having tons of resources at their literal fingertips)? I never thought I’d see the day… 😅
Anything prior to 1.5 would be considered a beta version, something like v0.4. So your v3.0 is laughable.
Glad I didn't play too far in.
September will be Starfield month for me, though, and after that we have Persona 5 Tactica and Persona 3 Reload releasing in the coming months. No idea when I'll get to it.
Tempted to replay the game from scratch when Phantom Liberty comes out.
i really really enjoyed it. (I never played the crappy PS4 version, so PS5 was my first experience)
Ooohh, sweet! Will probably do a full third playthrough and then play the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Love this game, despite all the apparent flaws. With them mostly gone or improved after the update, the game is in a good place!
@Majk_SVK 2.0 was quite solid last year though
Last time i played Cyberpunk 2077 was Oct 20th 2021. I have it on Steam so i hope after the new update i can get back into the game.
I look forward to playing cyberpunk again this December which will mark its 3rd year anniversary. I remember when I beat it on ps4 back in December 2020 which was an absolute nightmare. I consider it one of my greatest gaming achievements. But yeah I hope I finally get my money's worth 3 years later.
Happy to hear the upcoming improvements are not gated behind purchase of the story DLC.
