Love it or loathe it, the PS5 is at best an unorthodox looking console. Dbrand, the ever outspoken accessories and hardware modding manufacturer, has found the solution, however: translucent coloured plastic skins, just like those in the 90s. Whether you had a PS1 memory card, a Tamagotchi, a Nintendo 64, or a Game Boy Color, you’ll immediately recognise the style.
The official website leans hard into the nostalgia: “You're doing some online shopping. A company called Dbrand is selling Retro Darkplates for your PS5. Their translucent colours remind you of your old N64.” The description goes on and on, with the same tongue-in-cheek attitude the organisation is known for.
The plates are available for the standard, disc-based PS5 and its Blu-ray-less Digital Edition alternative in Smoke Black, Atomic Purple, Ice Blue, and Fire Orange. They’ll cost you anywhere from $84.00 to $99.95, depending on which option you plump up for. Will you be customising your console with one of these absolute beauties? Nah they look awful imo, not helped by the fact the inside of a PS5 is fairly bland to start with limiting the wow factor of a translucent cover. Also Dbrand try way too hard to be edgy
Have to admit, they kind of look so bad they look good. As in unique. As in, I wouldn’t be too disappointed to receive one as a gift…
Dbrand stuff is built pretty solid. I have some Darkplates and they lessen the PS5s footprint and cool it better. If I ever have money to burn, maybe I'll get these
Hold out for the Lisa Frank
I'm still rockin' my original black Dbrand Darkplates. I'll stick with those, thank you.
@TheKurgan they make the console look so good, with that matte black centre skin too. So glad I got mine before Sony cease & decisted them.
@Kidfried I'd be more interested in black, as well. 95% of my gear is black and just got that white PS5 sitting there. Xbox did that already and white is just a tricky color for any appliance.
The PS5 Pro is going to be chungus
@BusyOlf I know it's coming the normal time in the production line for a Pro but I just feel like there were so many years missed for people with a PS5, with shortage, pandemic, supply chain issues everywhere, etc. Even if it came out a year from now, it would feel too soon.
I always wanted my console to cosplay as a giant $2 pencil sharpener!
they look awful? And £90 for jellybean sandals for your PS5.. No
I loved origin iMac(1998).
I've got their original white plates with the center sticker and blue light overlay... Looks super slick and my PS5 has almost never been over heated or needed the fans to speed up. I attribute that to the improved airflow of the plates themselves.
Can't say I like these particular colors, but for anyone wondering: their products are built solidly and seem to work as advertised.
Their packaging was also SUPERB for what you're buying. I was very impressed by their presentation in that regard. Clearly they didn't cut corners in that area like so many boxed products these days.
These kind of remind me of the N64 days. I'd consider the Glacier Ice model and then move on.
Checked their site. Apparently it's based on the N64 days. Saw the price... cough $85! 😐
Dbrand is such a funny company lmao
Wish these would be a tenner and I thought Sony's array of colors was expensive.
Feel like the centre sticker might look bad
Does anything light up inside the PS5 that would be visible through this? That might be kinda cool
pretty good option if you miss the N64 era n.n
Bought the original darkplate wont buy anything else unless it’s a ps5 pro or mini. No saving the ugly original ps5 unfortunately
you can get these in a couple of weeks for a friction of the price on AliExpress. And that's what these Plastic Parts are worth. By no means can this stuff cost anything near 100 bucks.
Also, my PS5 is well hidden behind my TV, so any "make up" would be a waste of money 😜
All disc model options show as $104 for me, but they are all "on sale" for $85, which itself is at least $60 over what these should cost.
How much?!? 😂
Okay if you want to make your PS5 look like a cheap Chinese knock-off, but you'd have to pay me to degrade my console with those.
I can't put that thing next to my TV and stuff. Passed
I got the Black Sony Digital plates for my PS5 and black Dual Sense, looks really good, these Dbrand plates do nothing for me. A easy pass for me. Good for those that like them tho.
Wayyy too much money
@thefourfoldroot1 I actually like them!
I actually think they look cool! I am buying them. I like what I like. Everyone has their own opinion.
No! It's like looking at your PS5 in Predator sight.
I wonder how many of those who think these look awful didn’t grow up with Nintendo 64s and earlier consoles having such cases.
I wouldn’t use it for the living room but hell I might have it for a retro gaming room.
Its looks cheap and ugly just like all their stuff.
If you like gamer chair styling and RGB everything I suppose.
Looks cheap and tacky to me. "How to turn your premium product into Fisher Price." imo. But we all like different things.
Put these covers on your PS5 and it will look like an iMac G3.
Back to 1998!
These look hideous and cheap. Reminds me of those Mac Desktops from the early 2000's
I had an Atomic Purple Game Boy Color way back in the day. Always had a love for that color set up.
It's like I had air conditioning units installed by someone on mushrooms.
Lipstick on a pig! lol
Not for that price.
I'd avoid d-brand. Their support is really poor.
If they ever do a retro red or blue design, I may be tempted.
