With the tedious courtroom drama involving Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard finally coming to a close, and the commitment that the franchise will continue to release on PlayStation for the next decade at least, the actual Call of Duty game is poised to take centre stage once again. Recently, developer representatives showed off gameplay to NBA players – and an announcement can’t be far away.
Of course, this year’s game is rumoured to be Modern Warfare 3, and speculation from a notorious leaker suggests weapons from Modern Warfare 2 may transition to the new game. This wouldn’t be wildly surprising, as it was originally suspected that this year’s Call of Duty would be an expansion to last year’s release, as opposed to a standalone title. Plans have since purportedly changed internally, but some leaked user interface images certainly support that speculation, as it looks largely identical.
We’ll need to wait for official confirmation of all this, but Activision is busy pulling leaked screenshots from social networks like Twitter, so don’t be surprised if more info surfaces in the coming days. Are you interested in a Modern Warfare 3, or do you think this series is running out of steam? Paint your target in the comments section below.

I'm not a Call of Duty hater, but this year's game sounds like the most phoned in instalment they've done so far.
Maybe the official reveal can turn things around, but it sounds like it's going to be a really dry year for the series.
@get2sammyb I'm honestly not gonna complain(other than ruining DMZ with P2W skins) because I like MW reboot's gameplay over any of the developer's games. Especially Sledgehammer because man they suck.
at least it isnt another ww2 cod.
i wish we had gotten the original MW3's campaign remastered like they did for the first to MW games. Sure its not as good as the other two titles but finish what you started, activision. Maybe throw in Black Ops 1+2 remastered as well.
Expect another 200GB+ install size. Really hope MS sort these stupid sizes out as it really puts me off the series nowadays.
Wow that’s pretty lazy. It’s essentially just going to be an expansion, you used to get about 12 to 16 maps through DLC anyway, just this time it’ll have a campaign.
This will not happen - but it would be cool if MS switched to a bi-annual release schedule.
@get2sammyb I dunno. It’d be hard to top Cold War’s overall lack of content or Vanguard’s Vanguard-ness. I can’t comment on MW2 because I’ve not touched it, but that’s largely because the last two entries were so boring. For as solid as the CoD gameplay engine is, it baffles me how dull some of the games are.
I swear they have already released a MW 3 before.
@somnambulance I enjoyed Cold War's campaign personally, though! I know that's not why people really play Call of Duty, but I did like the story and missions in that one.
This franchise has been creatively bankrupt for years
@Cashews pretty sure they said they will. Actually one speculation was "if the deal doesn't happen Activision will keep the anual cod". That makes even funnier if someone actually sells their ps5 to buy an xbox just to not pay for something biennial.
Last CoD I played was the last Modern Warfare 3. Though the best thing about this whole thing is that we’re one step closer to the dream of having both Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 both be a thing.
MW3 was so underwhelming that it knocked me off the franchise. OG black ops remains GOAT in my book.
I would love if they just remastered the original MW3 like they did the first two
@get2sammyb ok, for campaign first players, Cold War wasn’t a bad entry. I actually enjoyed the campaign for that one and I can’t usually say that about the series. Huge missed opportunity the series had in not making a Ronald Reagan skin. Lol.
I’m multiplayer first with CoD though, so I’d say I was really disappointed with the six maps or whatever there were in that game. Cold War ultimately felt like the mp was sort of an afterthought, which it probably was, given that they had more eggs in the Warzone basket at that time.
@tameshiyaku For me, the original Black Ops did that for me. I did got back to trying MW3 and was like, “Nope, I’m good.” I didn’t go back til Black Ops 4 and Vanguard pushed me off again. I still have friends that want me to go back though.
I'm a COD hater, Haddock makes a better chippy fish anyday.
The saddest part of the 10 year deal for Call of Duty: Call of Duty still has to continue to be developed.
I really Microsoft moves all of CoD to just Warzone. Microsoft can rotate studios for development of new features for Warzone, but otherwise, the CoD Factories are free to make new games!
Controlled leak👀?
I do like COD for the campaign, but the 10 year deal means nothing.
Play the long game. Ride the wave. Do whatever afterwards 🤷♂️
I've always preferred the 'Warfare' series over the 'Black Ops' series and primarily because I prefer Spec Ops (the classic kind from the original MW2 & MW3, although the more recent versions are OK too) in a military shooter title, over zombies which is more prevalent in Black Ops than the warfare series. That said though, I also prefer Infinity Ward over Treyarch. So, as far as this year's release goes, it will remain to be seen who develops it and if they all of the sudden switch from Spec Ops, like the 2 most recent Warfare entries had, to zombies.
Yaaaaaaawn...
Change the channel Marge.
I thought they were skipping 2023 for COD because they weren't going to have a game ready, sounds like they've just rushed something out
@get2sammyb
And yet it will still be one of the best selling games of 2023.
Why should they try hard when mediocrity gets rewarded
@Netret0120 people don’t care about the quality. It’s a popular thing and they want to be a part of it. This isn’t the first game to experience this phenomena and it won’t be the last.
I'd love a remastered compilation of the Medal of Honour campaigns, also the Strike series (desert, jungle, urban, etc) get to it EA !
@GymratAmarillo I dunno - they have to come up with that 70Billion back somehow.
I have bought every COD since MW1 (the original) and each year I notice myself getting bored of them sooner. I used to play them near daily for 12 months right up until the new instalment but they have just stopped keeping my interest. They are also so hit and miss year on year with the misses seeming to come more regularly in recent years.
Considering I haven’t picked up MW2 since around March time and deleted it off the hard drive to free up the 5000gb it uses I will potentially miss this year for the first time if it’s just a rehash…..maybe I’m finally growing out of the obsessive need to get destroyed by kids half my age with twice the reaction speed.
@GeeEssEff I just assume the transition from giant gaming company to huge-mega- multinational most important tech company on the planet will mean this newest game won't be the best. This year. There will be growing pains.
Here is what I know for a fact: Pushsquare will go bananas on each minute detail that isn't to their liking and blame the FTC and look ridiculous in doing so. That is a truth.
Ehh, i’d rather spend my time and money on another series moving forward.
@NinjaNicky
Exactly what I was thinking, a hard hitting grounded Battlefield, man BF1 was my end of COD, man I loved BF1. Those days are over though I think
Isn't Sledgehammer working on this one supposedly? I'm good then. I only dabble in COD when a new Infinity Ward entry comes out. Plus there's just too much other stuff to play.
Rumor has it that the PS5 versions of CoD will have larger than normal Microsoft logos on screen when you boot the game up
@Netret0120 The gamers deserve to get screwed over we always reward the worst practices. Bad games we run to get it its kinda sad to see.
@NinjaNicky I would love something else a real new successor to Killzone 3 I know not realistic but I loved the Killzone heavier gameplay.
I got a little excited and ASSUMED you mean Modern Warfare 3 remastered. They did 1&2 but not 3, annoying. Hopefully it will part of this game and then get released separately.
@NinjaNicky Killzone 3 and Resistance 3 one of the few shooters I platinumed. ☺️👌
