The first post-launch update for Final Fantasy XVI is available to download now on PS5, bringing the Square Enix title up to version number 1.000.003. The patch adds a couple of new features to the game like a motion blur toggle, another three controller layouts, and more extensive camera sensitivity options. The stability of some menus is also said to be improved and some text issues have also been fixed. It's a 267.1MB download.
Square Enix has provided a full round-up of the update 1.03 patch notes in the tweet below:
Given motion blur was a bit of an annoyance during our review process, as highlighted at the end of our Final Fantasy 16 PS5 review, it's a welcome feature to now be able to adjust it. Will you be toning it down, or have you gotten used to it? Let us know in the comments below.

Looks way better without motion blur ruining the visuals. Now we just need a performance mode without raytracing and we will be good to go.
Motion blur toggle!
Excellent. The motion blur was making it very difficult for me to focus on the screen.
Now just improve the performance mode and we're golden ^__^
Let me turn off motion blur and camera shake on all games please 👍Don't even get me started on that weird film grain some games add...
OMG this is the game-saving update that I've been waiting for
The game looks much better without motion blur. If the frame rate dips are fixed this game is 100% perfect.
Excellent cant wait to turn motion blur off later. Needs performance patch now
@Nepp67 Pretty sure RT isn't even in the game, i don't recall Digital Foundry mentioning it. Considering how much they cut back in performance mode i doubt they would have left RT in it anyway.
Thank Greagor for the motion blur toggle!
I've not had a problem with blur, personally. I've been using graphics mode, performance mode was a bit dizzying (maybe that was the blur) I might try out some combinations of settings to see if there are any improvements. But the more stable frame rate of graphics mode suits me just fine if not 😄
Finally, i can hashtag the game when sharing images. The update i was waiting for!
Seriously though, this is great. I'll be switching off motion blur later.
An update to address framedrops in performance mode when out in the field next please
finished it last night, absolutely epic game.
Still melting PS5s in quality mode? Fortunatly didn't have the issue myself...
Motion Blur didn't affect me as well, usually deactivate it in other games, but it's good to have a toggle for every taste.
Awesome game btw.
Set motion blur to 2. Seems a much better balance now.
I prefer motion blur at 1.
Completely off looks worse 😑
What happened to the 'no patch' self-righteousness?
Final-ly!
That's got to be some of the worst motion blur I've seen. Feel like I'm playing super drunk, always seeing a slight double.
Off it goes, fixing my only real complaint of the game.
My wife hated it too. I had to experience pms her with her hatred of blur in all games playing this heavy duty use.
She gave me new ptsd to carry on in life with.
@Krysus They never said it wouldn't have post release patches.
@BrotherFilmriss That's the odd thing with motion blur.
It seems to be like 3D movies.
When 3D was everywhere, I could watch and enjoy it at the movies, yet both my dad and my wife couldn't see it at all.
Like the glasses on, there was nothing off the screen to them, yet there was for everyone else.
Investigating into it years back, ends up a certain amount couldn't register it. Something to do individually with people's brains and sight perception that's beyond me to detail exactly.
Anyway, blur seems the same. You can get a bunch of people who can see the double's fading around the motion and others who don't see it at all.
Same with framerates. You'll always have some scratching there heads because everything appears fine to them when others do see the fluctuating framerates.
Nobody is wrong. It just isn't something seen by all. Trippy stuff.
Eyes are weird. Life is weird.
I guess my point is that I hate motion blur. 😄
Motion blur is such a useless post processing feature in games. A performance hit, just so it looks like Vaseline is smudged over your screen while you move... Incredible.
Glad you can turn it off.
I turned motion blur off I think it’s so much better
Can I just add that the motion blur in the cutscenes is incredibly well implemented. It's subtle, but it makes those 30fps cinematics seem so, so smooth. So when used well, motion blur is a great tool. But yeah during the game, especially in fidelity mode, it's kinda nauseating.
@Mitsui No, the best option with motion blur with any game is off.
@Snake_V5 Depends on how well it's utilised. Some games, like this one and The Witcher 3, I'd say yeah, turn it off; it's aggressive and has an obvious ghosting effect.
But some games use it really well, like Uncharted 4 and TLOU 2; they would look worse without. It's because of how modern OLEDs display frames that we kinda need motion blur in the first place. I'd still take blur over judder.
Nuts. I was really hoping for the option to turn off quest markers.
I’m interested in the new controller layouts. I couldn’t find one I liked in the demo. I had to swap buttons out in the PS5 system settings, but had trouble with certain prompts because they didn’t appear in-game.
Why custom layouts aren’t standard these days is beyond my understanding. It’s one of the most basic accessibility options to include in any game.
Keep updating it, i will buy it at some point. It’s on my list. Glad to see the updates. This will be running smooth as butter by the time i buy and start playing it.
I play on performance mode and the game crashes constantly. It has nothing to do with overheating as it happens right after booting the game up sometimes. Last night was the final straw, I can't even complete a battle.
Contacted Square enix support and I've tried all the usual stuff except rebuilding the database. So I'll be doing that this evening I guess. Pretty disappointed, it seems like only a very small amount of users are being impacted by this.
All they need now is a difficulty optuon harder than brain dead easy.
@ILikeStake Do you use your ps5 vertically ?
@Neptunes No, horizontal, disc version, ton of airflow.
@my_dude I don't believe it is a PS5 issue as every other game works perfect. Never had an overheating message and again this happens sometimes when cold booting the game, so it's not overheating. I even checked the vents and its super clean. Square Enix support did say there are other users reporting these issues but it seems the number is very small. Thanks for the well wishes.
@ILikeStake Perhaps reinstalling the game?and it seems that playing quality mode runs better at frames around 60-45fps, give it a try.
@cassiel Yes, I have reinstalled the game at Square Enix's request and the same thing is happening. Now they want me to rebuild the database on the PS5. I'm dubious whether this will work but I am going to try it anyways. I am using Performande mode, which is supposed to be less strenuous than the graphics mode, but I will try graphics to see if there is still problems.
@KaijuKaiser
I can confidently say that the update has fixed my issue with my system shutting itself down presumably from overheating. I regularly clean my system and it has never had obstructive airflow. I also entered a ticket with square and shortly after the patch came out they responded to the ticket saying some crashing issues have been addressed with the most current patch. Seems to have definitely addressed my issue.
@ILikeStake I'm playing in graphics mode and I only got the warning message once, after 8 hrs of playing, lol... I don't think you'll have any problem since you keep your PS5 clean. Besides, the game is really stressing the console when you fight a boss in the main story line, those happen usually in areas when you open a door or arriving to an arena, you can save at that point, let the console rest for 30 minutes or so, and get into the fight.
@WallyWest Really? I kept hearing that was what was causing the issues but if that's the case then I don't know what is causing the issues
@Loamy My issue was that the motion blue just looked like it was badly done in 16 compared to other games. I'll try it out on 2 to see if it looks any better though
@Mitsui Agreed, with 3 I've still got that horrible blurring on the edges of the character
@Nepp67 You might be confusing it with Jedi Survivor as that has RT forced on in Performance Mode.
That’s all fine and dandy but should’ve been there on release (motion blur toggle). Now perhaps they may take a look at the game’s stellar performance mode…
@Ambassador_Kong The higher difficulties are unlocked upon completing the story, great innit!?
Really need a text enlargement for non subtitles. Everything is so tiny, and poor eyesight doesn’t help.
@Ambassador_Kong See, the cool thing is, you have to beat the entire game on brain dead Easy to unlock actual difficulty options.
The one consistency across final fantasy as a series is that the developers don't value your time.
