The all-consuming full-time job, also known as Final Fantasy 14, will eat up more hours of your life next year, when it adds its fifth major expansion, named Dawntrail. Announced during a glitzy fan fest event earlier today, director Naoki Yoshida described it as “the very best summer vacation a hero could possibly have”. It’s set in a tropical area named Tural, west of Eorzea. There, you’ll assist in a rite of succession to determine the land’s next ruler.
As you’d expect, the new content will come alongside a major patch, which will increase the level cap from 90 to 100, and will include several new jobs. There’ll also be new dungeons, enemies, gear, raids, and much more – as well as a major graphical overhaul, which will make the NPCs “much prettier” according to Yoshi-P.
Alongside the new expansion, Square Enix also confirmed that Final Fantasy 14’s free trial will grow significantly alongside this year’s 6.5 patch, adding in all of the content from 2017’s Stormblood, alongside its existing offering of A Realm Reborn and Heavensward. That’s hundreds of hours of content, at no cost with no subscription fee!

Vacation? I didn't know you speak French! 😁
I wonder if they are going to sell this full package for the Xbox. And I wonder if it will be a gamepass title? A gamepass mid-tier MMO would be interesting.
Really looking forward to this!!! And it's also finally coming to Xbox!
@Cashews Doubt they will add this to game pass. The base game plus two expansions are going to be free. That's a huge amount of content, for free, but likely still tied to requiring either Game Pass Ultimate or Game Pass Core given the core game is actually a paid game, not F2P.
Mind you: always keep in mind if you ever paid for the game before, you cant ever play the "free" game again (unless anything has changed recently.)
About time Derplander gets some time off on a paradise island.
@Dragonsbane I don't know. It's a very old game. They have to find a way getting it into people's hands.
If they aren't under Sony contract to do otherwise I expect an announcement that 16 is going to the X in the next month or so. Before the next quarterly stock meeting - which should be a glorious disaster.
@Cashews There's a huge free trial. That's how they get it into new players' hands, regardless of platform.
@get2sammyb 14 is old as dirt. A free tial is nothing. Less than nothing in the Fortnite F2P era. MMOs always do free trials and you get free lootboxes and here is a pink ninja fox costume if you log in stuff. It barely registers with most people any longer.
Square is going to have to go bold if they want to right this ship imo. we shall see.
@Cashews “ likely still tied to requiring either Game Pass Ultimate or Game Pass Core given the core game is actually a paid game, not F2P”
I’m assuming this will get changed as I don’t think you even need PS+ to play FF14 on PlayStation
@Cashews the trial spans the base game and 2 expansions. Thats 5 to 6 years worth of content. I can easily see a casual player taking a year to beat all of that story. Rushing through that story can take several months.
This is not just a few free loot boxes, each of these expansions could be a full single player game on their own right, and there will be 3 of them available now. No time limit to play through it all either. This is forever.
The only gotcha is that if you ever subscribe, you lose access to the free trial permanently, at least under that SquareEnix account, you would have to start from scratch in a brand new account if you wanted to revert to free trial.
@number1024 okay. I played FF11 the day it came out on the PS2 and many MMOs before that one. I get it just fine I promise.
14 is very old at this point. I'm sure the base has dwindled over the years and they need some fresh blood. How do they do it? Take some MS money > put it on gamepass > sell a bunch of other junk
I can see it. We'll know for sure soon enough. cheers.
This is probably the only Final Fantasy game I haven't stuck with, Gameplay was good and the visuals are fine but without putting the huge amount of single player games I have on hold I would never get far into this especially with all the expansions, easily over 400 hours of content.
@number1024 GW2 exists and that isn't selling with p2w from my understanding. It also doesn't have subscription services.
@number1024 It been a while since I played FF14 on consoles. So I couldn't remember if it had required PS+.
@Jamesblob No it aint, but it is still a big MMO with no P2W options or even a subscription service.
@Jamesblob Considering that I have a friend on PC playing the game on system weaker than Series S… The S is far from the lowest common denominator
@WizzNL i can agree with that. this one might be an exception though. The timing is strange to me. Then again, FF11 did come out on the 360 a long time after it's initial release. We shall see I guess.
@Jamesblob are worms in the dirt lower or higher than plain dirt?
@Jamesblob Could you speak English please?
@Jamesblob Maybe no one else is responding because they are on the floor laughing, gasping for air on that gold.
@Cashews Genuinely didn't know what the guy was talking about other than something about worms lol
@Jamesblob You can think Gw2 is a failed free to play mmo, it doesn't make it so though.
@Jamesblob Considering that over 500,000 players are still playing it I'd beg to differ.
@Cashews There’s nothing to “right.” You have full access to the base game plus the FIRST TWO EXPANSIONS.
That’s an insane amount of content, all for free. And the player base is larger than ever, Endwalker was massive.
@dskatter i got it now. I mis-understood the whole deal at first. Seems like a good deal from all perspectives. Cheers.
@Cashews @dskatter
Just to back up what dskatter is saying, the amount of content available is almost overwhelming. Leveling up classes and jobs alone would take more time than most standalone games. Happy it's finally making its way to Xbox.
@Cashews mid-tier? Someone must have lied to you several times
@Cashews All good, I figured there had to be some kind of massive misunderstanding here.
@lacerz It should be a good move for the game's overall health. I hope it's cross platform - cross-platform is the best.
I doubt I'll play it though. MMOs are too much a time sink and life-killers.
