Capcom has confirmed its masterful PS5, PS4 remake of Resident Evil 4 has now surpassed five million units sold. The milestone was announced in a press release where it's revealed the overall Resident Evil series has sold more than 142 million copies as of 31st March 2023. Having already released the free Mercenaries expansion, the Japanese publisher looks set to continue support with a free PSVR2 mode.
The press release reads: "Sales of Resident Evil 4 grew following a highly positive reception from customers as well as with the release of The Mercenaries, free additional downloadable content, driving worldwide sales over 5 million units." It continues: "Further, Capcom looks to continue expanding sales with the upcoming release of Resident Evil 4 VR Mode, free downloadable content compatible with PlayStation VR2."
In addition to the previously announced PSVR2 mode, DLC that brings back the Ada Wong-focused expansion Separate Ways is heavily rumoured to be in development. In fact, the PC version of Resident Evil 4 has already had a handful of new achievements added to it, which can't be for nothing. The game managed to sell three million copies within its first two days on the market, and then reached four million two weeks later.

This game deserves it, amazing single player games will still sell.
Any mention of when that PSVR2 upgrade might drop?
@WaveBoy
Kewl. Just long enough to finish some other games first. Thanks!
Great game, great sales and multiplatform. So lets all chill over final fantasy 16 sales which i am sure can achieve similar over a similar time frame
@Rob_230 the problem is that the two games probably had a different budget. I hope FF16 ends up selling more.
Truly a great game. Separate ways will probably be apart of the gold edition.
I can’t wait to play the PSVR2 mode. 7 & 8 are taken to the next level in VR. I fully expect Capcom to knock it out the park again.
Still funny how how these Capcom games do these numbers over time and media says what an accomplishment. Sony games doing it within the launch week are floops lol
@KaijuKaiser @Rob_230 I was Just about to post something similar, still need to get Resident Evil 4 as I've enjoyed the last 3 games. Slowly catching up with a lot of classic series, I'm enjoying a lot of the remakes and remasters as I missed out on loads of Playstation games being primarily an Xbox and Nintendo owner back in the day. Next up Metal Gear Solid and will slowly get through all the FF games, XVI is great regardless of what some of the more hardcore (grumpy old gamers) think.
5 million is a great number though and I'll add to it soon!
Hoping the psvr 2 has a price drop soon. Want this in vr and play village.
@KaijuKaiser Yeah but what was cheaper to make and market and is SE as happy with FF16 sales as Capcom are RE4?
@DennisReynolds you forget sony mostly pay for the marketing for ff16 not square enix.
remake code veronica you cowards
On the topic of FFXVI sales vs RE4R sale: RE4 has more of a struggle since it's a remake of a game that's been released on every platform going for twenty years. It'd be more relevant to compare FFVII Remake to RE4 Remake. If a brand new Final Fantasy, the first in seven years, has to be compared to a remake of a game from twenty years ago to look good, there's a problem.
I mean, for example, RE Village sold more and faster than 4 Remake despite 4 being regarded as the best one by many. Incidentally, FFVII Remake sold 3.5 million in 2 days compared to 3 million in a week for XVI - and Remake sold worse than the original as remakes almost always do. RE4R actually sold better in the initial period than the original but not by that much considering the original was on a console with about 15 million units sold.
@KaijuKaiser False comparison given how one game cost significantly more.
"Further, Capcom looks to continue expanding sales with the upcoming release of Resident Evil 4 VR Mode, free downloadable content compatible with PlayStation VR2."
He's right, I know at least one additional copy will be sold as soon as the PSVR2 mode drops.
Waiting for the PSVR 2 patch. As soon as it drops, i'm in 100%!😁
I hope the PSVR2 update includes support for the "rumored" Ada mode and Mercs. RE8's VR mode was great but it sadly didn't cover the DLC or the Mercs mode. Not covering the Mercs mode is a really weird omission. I hope RE4's PSVR2 update doesn't cut the same corner.
