Baldur's Gate 3 caused one hell of a stir last month when developer Larian Studios showed off a player romance scene involving a bear. Well, technically it was a druid who had transformed into a bear, but that was never going to stop the tidal wave of shock and awe headlines that flooded the internet following the presentation.
Anyway, the upcoming RPG reportedly has a lot more where that came from. Senior writer John Corcoran took to Twitter earlier in order to, er, reassure fans that the bear scene is basically just the tip of the iceberg.
"Spent the past week or so doing final tests on some companion romance arcs, and… damn, I’m still surprised at just how horny this game is," writes Corcoran. "Bear’s got nothin’ on what’s still to come." We honestly don't know whether we should be worried or intrigued.
Romantic relationships have long played a part in RPGs that emphasise player choice, but Larian is clearly trying to highlight just how much effort it's pumped into every potential path. We just hope that the game's most outlandish moments haven't been spoiled by the time Baldur's Gate 3 lands on PS5 next month.
How do you feel about crazy romance options in your RPG? Feel free to raise and eyebrow in the comments section below.

My body is ready!... Or at least my character's body will be 😂
Baldur’s Gate really isn’t my thing, but based on the vibes of most of the articles about it, I really hope the soundtrack features Pulp’s This is Hardcore.
“ Oh, that goes in there
Then that goes in there…”

Has a tough job if it wants to beat the batshit craziness of Rimworld 'romances'....
Why are you peddling this sort of news? Seriously how many articles does this one, taken the game as a whole, tiny aspect of the game need?
Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited for it, just purchased it on steam, but how about addressing the parallels to tabletop d&d or give a brief overview of the story so far... oh wait yes, that requires actual effort.
Are there any headlines about this game that aren't about sex? I hear more about its sex stuff like they are using it as its only major selling point which I'm sure they are. Right now it's actually turning me off (pun intended) to be interested in this game.
@Gamer_Guy With a name like Rimworld...lol, nvrm

Careful now
I find myself wondering where the reviews are too, @KaijuKaiser. My only response is they are trying to prevent possible spoilers, but I don't know whether that is actually the reason. It's not always the case that when a games reviews drop late that it is because the game is likely to be received badly, but it often is. I always think that if you have considerable confidence in your product, why not allow the reviews to drop early to drum up still more interest in your game? I don't know. I'm sure that Larian have an explanation for it, but as someone that is super excited for the game, the lack of reviews at this stage is a tad concerning...
@KaijuKaiser @Fiendish-Beaver PC code was sent out on Sunday, so I wouldn't expect reliable, scored reviews for a while. Obviously, we'll be waiting for the PS5 version next month.
Just a bit of fun, innit? The originals were BioWare and look at both Mass Effect and Dragon Age, incredibly horny series. The old D&D novels were laughably homoerotic as well, though possibly accidentally, the entire sword and sorcery genre basically is.
@Fiendish-Beaver @KaijuKaiser Can't speak on the reviews but I'm going to guess that not a lot of gameplay has been shown because although this is a really big rpg, the CRPG genre is kind of niche as far as the general public is concerned. So watching grid-based strategic combat would run the risk of being more isolating than a draw. I mean, I like CRPG's and strategy games but the visuals that come with them are usually either confusing or unappealing to me unless my hands are on the controller and im immerged in the game.
Meanwhile, advertising the grand story, all the things you can do, the abilities, the classes, and yes, the sex scenes (sex sells, baby), are probably going to reach more people
@Amnesiac "What do you do for an encore"
Thank you, @LiamCroft. That's really helpful. I have high hopes for the game, personally. So I'm super excited!
Are there any embargos in place? Are you even allowed to say whether there are? 😜 If not, any clues as to how it's shaping up?
Sunday seems really recent for a 200 hour game that is releasing tomorrow, or is that strictly for the PlayStation?
Apologies for the all the questions. I bet you wish you hadn't replied now... 😂
That doesn’t sound great…. Especially because it’s probably not going to tie some of the horny things to playing a bad guy.
However, they did announce what I believe is a nudity filter, so that will probably be convicted by that to pick it up.
So glad it’s (almost) finally here!
This might be the first time I buy a digital only game full price day one, bring on the elf bear companion orc porking!
I'm kind of glad PC gets it a month before...there's bound to be a whole bunch of egregious, yet easily fixable, bugs and glitches that will be patched out by the time we get our hands on it. 👍
@Fiendish-Beaver I know only PC code has been sent out, we’ve no idea when PS5 keys will come through. We’re not doing any coverage of tomorrow’s PC version, so I don't know if the final version is any good or not. I hope it is!
@deathaxe it's just the usual few who aren't interested in the game and don't like the amount of coverage it's getting, or they're angry it's only on digital because they'd rather miss a game they'd love than not buy on disc, or they're angry because they simply don't understand this type of game etc etc
The 'getting angry over a videogame' thing is all too real for some!
@deathaxe @Phantasystar77
Fantastic metaphor. Yes, the act of Bestiality is disgusting, because its a sentient person taking advantage of a nonsentient living creature. But that's not what this is. It's difficult for a lot of people to wrap their heads around because it's nothing they'll ever happen in the real world, but still, try to move past the knee-jerk disgust response to explore the philosophy.
Another example: Say you're married to someone for a decade and by some magic, your spouse is transformed into a bear. Your spouse still has all of their memories, can still speak, it's still your spouse in every way shape or form, but they're now a bear and it's irreversible. Is it wrong to sleep with your spouse?
For me personally, I can only be attracted to a human, but I wouldn't think it THAT farfetched for someone to continue doing so based off of their emotional/romantic connection with their spouse as long as their spouse is still sentient.
@PlasmaticSnake “The fact that this kind of stuff is normalized while opinions like ours get sneered at is very concerning.”
It’s almost as if you’re the ones who are wrong, isn’t it?! 😂
Although I reckon Tears of the Kingdom did the bestiality thing first this year.
@PlasmaticSnake IT IS NOT REAL
People so mad over make believe shape shifter sex, yet will be playing CoD/GTA shooting/stabbing people not caring, because it’s not real.
@PlasmaticSnake not really, mostly just saying you’re wrong regarding your opinion on this matter
@PlasmaticSnake I got your back jack
@kyleforrester87 Having blocked said user, I’m going to guess the words ‘sexual deviancy’ were used at least once 😂
@PlasmaticSnake

It’s a brave new world!
Okay. Cool. Thank you, @LiamCroft. Still, Sunday for a game so big seems a mighty big ask to get a review for the entire game by tomorrow...
@Fiendish-Beaver Oh yeah, I hope nobody has pushed themselves to have a scored review tomorrow. It's not fair on them.
@Phantasystar77 You don't even know what's in it yet. You sound like a republican talking about video games in the 90s. Or even worse an evangelical at any time in history. Grow up
Kool romance in gaming being done right ✅️ 👌 👏
@Phantasystar77 you and others are the ones that are linking a made up computer game to beastiality. Nobody else is making a big deal of it at all.
Most grown ups can figure out that it isn’t real. It isn’t an actual person f***ing a bear that’s been put in the game. It’s some pixels on a screen.
For anyone looking to go more in depth with gameplay, there are ton of deep dives on YouTube with the devs. Races, Classes, Subclasses, Combat, Alignment, there's a lot that's covered. And it all looks absolutely fantastic. As far as this article goes, I was missing the romance options and cheesy sex scenes of the RPGs of yesteryear, so I'm here for it.
@Phantasystar77 I don’t have twitter and don’t read it. Never have so no idea what anyone is saying on there.
It is you jumping to conclusions that something made up in a fantasy setting has anything to do with morals in real life. It really doesn’t.
Nobody is ever going to say, omg I saw someone f*** a bear in baldurs gate, so I’m going to go for a walk in the woods and do it with the first one I find!
Just as they can’t be a necromancer like in other games and raise the dead. Or be a giant talking shark that eats people like in suicide squad.
@Phantasystar77 No offence but people don't really have real morals despite what we pretend, sex and violence is just what humans are and always have been. The Bear in BG is a human druid who has taking that form its not an actual Bear so while weird there's nothing wrong here as the Bear is just a form.
Also check out Loki in Norse Myth, having sex with a "bear" is pretty tame compared to what Loki got up to.
@DennisReynolds “ No offence but people don't really have real morals despite what we pretend, sex and violence is just what humans are and always have been.” Are you the real Dennis Reynolds?
@nessisonett perfectly said mate haha Here's me thinking RPG fans WANTED more games like OG Mass Effect and Dragon Age, must be out of touch
@DennisReynolds I made a variation of this exact point to @get2sammyb this morning haha
N.i.c.e. good to hear.word up son
laughs in Crush Crush
@Phantasystar77 “from lefties into that stuff…’ I mean literally WHERE does one even start with THAT?! Lolz!
@kyleforrester87 Haha. It is true though we humans do seem to love those things, most decent people have limits and understand the difference between right and wrong but we're also people who are hyped for Mortal Kombat next month and will watch the new Saw movie. We're also people that in the past went to public executions as a day out and enjoyed watching slaves hack each other up in gladiator battles. Overall i just find it funny when people talk about morals regarding content featured in stuff like BG3 when we have a clear history of loving violent and sexual things sometimes together
@nhSnork Just realised I have that gods damned bear as my Steam profile pic...
