With the autumn approaching, it's time for information about this year's edition of the NHL franchise to start trickling in. And the first thing out of the gate is course the cover athlete. Last year, we saw not one, but two firsts, with Trevor Zegras making the first member of the Anaheim Ducks to appear on a cover, as well as Olympian Sarah Nurse marking the first woman. While this year's cover athlete isn't a first in quite the same way, it does make this lifelong Colorado Avalanche fan very, very happy.
That's right, NHL 24's cover athlete is none other than phenom defenseman Cale Makar. Makar represents the first time the Avalanche have had a cover athlete since 2004 when Hall-of-Famer and current GM Joe Sakic graced the front of the box.

Makar represents one of the most electrifying stars in the NHL, and he's arguably the most talented defenseman playing. He's got so many incredible moments that picking just one highlight moment from his career is challenging, from scoring a goal in his first-ever game, winning the Norris, Conn Smythe, and the Stanley Cup in the same year, or this absolutely filthy overtime winner.
Hopefully, Makar's electric performance on the ice will translate in the game, and NHL 24 will offer a marked improvement for the series. The NHL games might be in a better place than Madden, but there's plenty of room for improvement. We'll find out when the gameplay reveal is shown off not too far down the road.
Does this year's cover athlete have you excited? Would you have picked someone else? Walk the blue line in the comments.

Who cares who is on the cover, all that matters is if the game is good or not.
Hopefully a new cover athlete won't be the only new feature in the game. NHL games have become so rinse and repeat.
