In a move that seems a bit strange, EA will be bringing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor to last-gen consoles at some point in the future. The publisher dropped this bombshell during its latest business briefing, stating that the port is in the "early stages" of development. Okay then.
Survivor released for the PS5 earlier this year, back in April. Developer Respawn had previously suggested that the game would take full advantage of current-gen hardware — the main reason as to why it would skip decade-old systems like the PS4.
Now, obviously, the PS4 still has a huge install base, but you've got to imagine that the people who wanted to play Survivor got it for their shiny new console, or their PC. Again, porting it backwards to completely outdated hardware seems like a weird thing to do.
It's also worth mentioning that the action adventure title has some performance related issues on PS5 — problems that have persisted since the game's aforementioned April launch. These issues are reportedly being worked on, but it does make you wonder how it'll run on a PS4...
So, er, dare we ask if you'll be grabbing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS4? Question last-gen's life cycle in the comments section below.

Sales must of been really poor.
@UltimateOtaku91 The contrary, apparently. It sold very well and they're looking to sell even more.
720p sub-30fps on PS5.
Yeah this project wont be cancelled at all.
Maybe a result of the Switch's successor given it would probably be around base PS4 power? Switch has been a gigantic success so lots of 3rd parties may want to support the successor early on.
@Exerion76 To be fair, there really isn't any reason why wouldn't run perfectly fine on a PS4.
Huh? It doesn't run all that well on PS5 in the first place.
Instead of worry about porting the game to PS4. How about fixing the performance on console and PC? Even as a massive Star Wars fan, i could not push myself to complete it with how bad the performance was in some places... And this was on a PC with a 4090 and an i7-11700k installed to a Samsung 980 Pro. Hell, not even the supposedly broken Last of Us Part 1 ran as bad.
Luckily, steam has a good refund system, and i was able to get my $70 back. This is why Playstation need to work on getting a good refund system.
@Ichiban right. The design of the game doesn't have anything that would be impossible to do on PS4. Just scale everything to min, cap at 30fps and that's it. Oh, add a couple mins of level loading into the mix.
WTF....lol smh what a waste of resources.
This won't run well on PS4.
Downgrade is not free.
Don’t understand why.
Can it be 70 dollars please?
PS4 for life!! It’ll never die as the accountants know it’s a cash cow for now and into eternity
Long live the ps4!!
Back port it to the PS3 while you're at it
For the funnies
@Grumblevolcano Good point! They cant announce it yet so annouce the PS4 version. That's really the only way down-porting would make sense.
I just got the platinum in RE4 Remake on PS4. To be honest the game runs great. It loads only when you lose or between chapters. I have also beaten most cross gen releases in the PS4 (Horizon FW, GOW Ragnarok, Miles Morales, RE Village) and others and I didn't think I missed much except the load times.
That said I have no idea about Star Wars, yet alone this game.
Did this not sell well? They must think the extra cost to port this won't outweigh the extra potential sales.
@haoie It did sell well actually.
As for the performance, don't forget one of the big reasons for the low internal resolutions on the PS5/XSX was due to the fact that it had baked in RT. Hopefully they will make it at least playable.
On the PS4, that obviously won't be there so that should help with getting it to run on the lesser hardware. It also probably be a fixed 30fps.
That doesn’t surprise me. It didn’t really scream ‘next gen’ to me. Very disappointing sequel which never really took off the way I hoped it would. Like, it was ok but I thought the first game was quite restrained and expected the sequel to really up the ante but it didn’t. It was just one note from beginning to end.
@Grumblevolcano I honestly have no idea what you’re trying to say here? I’m not being awkward I genuinely am lost
I’ve long since moved to PS5, but I did stick with a PS4 Pro for a little while after the PS5 launched and I found that the PS4 versions of all the cross gen games I played were perfectly playable. I think this will be no different.
PS4 was a great console with many great games, but I think it's time to move on.
After playing Jedi Survivor on PS5 I swore myself I would never touch an EA published game ever again. This news confirm I made the right choice and of course, I stand by it.
Huh. Did anyone else not have any issues with this on PS5? I'm a little surprised by all the comments. I didn't have any problems on my playthrough, and thought it looked and played great. The story was the only thing I was let down by.
Current gen made sense I think but I mean if they try??? I get old gen audience is bigger but what do they expect either for sales when new consoles come out. I get many people will enjoy it. I am on old gen/experienced it with family on current gen and was confused with some design decisions/didn't like it. Download also being hilarious on EA's part Square compressed FF16 what is EA/Respawn's excuse of two disks or compression? Hmmm. Or Sony having thicker Ultra Blu-Ray disks like past DVD/Blu-ray had?
That and I mean it didn't do anything super impossible for last gen to handle then just well loading times (game design won't until we are completely current gen but I mean until I see it sure I'm on old gen (even if good ideas can happen on any gen if they are willing to and depending on the limits to pull off the scale they do it then smaller scale but still possible or the scale is needed to make it happen) but I mean why should I upgrade if we only see loading time differences, lighting push hardware (HDR that looks like a filter than a good benefit but has it's moments in some games/films/live content I won't deny) in ways I couldn't care less, cinematic film grain/motion blur to turn off for better performance XD and similar game design then actually using the hardware better and coming up with new ideas with the hardware.
PS3/4 were 1080p (sure more RAM/CPU power so better textures and other things) but I mean Cell to 2013 Laptop spec I think isn't much (it is but it also isn't) compared to a PS5 so I expect better with a large jump in hardware yet we haven't seen it so eh. How many PC exclusives did either???? I wonder besides big publishers focus on console as not everyone has a high end PC, I don't, I don't wish to either).
So 1 disk and a large download to I assume digital only and not another awkward disk and download situation if EA wouldn't fund 2 disks or even well Respawn getting the game size down like Square did FF16.
The game is ok I didn't like it. Even as a platformer fan I got confused what the rules they were asking of the player (it being more that wasn't exciting either, I didn't like the combat but is it a bit better in Survivor yes but I mean why have all these focuses on combat in games and have less combat it made no sense) and other aspects were just as unexciting as the first.
Also cosmetics to go back to. Upgrades in games with roadblocks sure cosmetics. They are skippable who really cares to go back and get them they add nothing to the game. XD
Who at Respawn thought that was a good idea. It's not compelling the way a new stance, armour, new lightsaber ability, or anything else, a blueprint, a skill tree passive perk, anything but cosmetics that are worthless and don't have that same wow factor let alone weight to it then looking cool so what The game still feels and plays the same as games with illusion of game mechanics it's not worth it.
People thinking this will run fine on ps4 are in for a rude awakening. Game runs terrible on everything it plays on. Can't wait for the df video on it.
@Boucho11 If they want to bring this to the Switch's successor and the console is around the same power as PS4/XB1 they may decide they may as well port it to PS4 and XB1 as well.
Not sure what the point of this is
Didn't a similar sort of thing happen with hogwarts legacy? There's still millions of people on PS4 so if it's actually a good port it'll probably sell well.
@AverageGamer Controller and refund is the only reason i buy 95% of my games on Xbox. If Sony had a refund system it would go a long ways. Thanks for calling that out. Not to many seems to mention that. But it is a big deal and would be a huge benefit for PS console users. 😊
I'm one of the people who actually would be interested in this.
@Deadhunter
I had a great time with it myself. No real issues too other than an occasional frame drop here and there but nothing drastic. I actually enjoyed the story personally but to each their own.
A bit of a strange choice to port it backwards to PS4 now but if they can figure it out, good for them. Get those extra sales.
It will be because it all comes down to money and keeping shareholders happy but they will have to eventually leave consoles like the PS4 behind for good due to games being more technical. Even the PS5 is technically outdated compared to current tech that are currently available, never mind the PS4 whose specs are ancient these days. I mean we’re still having to choose between 30/60fps for many games due to current gen consoles not able to output full native 4K @60fps.
I want to play games on my PS4 as much as i want to play them on my 1050Ti
Why they are sitting in my closet.
Pretty Laughable considering the current Gen game was never fixed on the technical front.
@ActionPanther It ran fine for me though. Didn't experience any crashes so...
@KundaliniRising333 it's all about money for EA
Colossal waste of time and money. 40m ps5 owners out there as of today. By time you release this thing that number could double. At the very least be at 60m. There won't be any gamers left on ps4 to care.
Time to let it go EA.
I thought it was already on ps4, weird choice to skip it. I wasn't gonna play it either way though, the first game wasn't very good.
@HonestHick Most people don't care about a refund policy because they argument is buy physical or to just stop pre-ordering games and read reviews.
But I don't care for physical games (unless it for my switch), and I like forming my own opinions on products I buy. Plus, everyone has a different tolerance level for game performance. Jedi Survivor is probably the first time I consider the performance actually trash for a game... and I play a lot of Switch games.
all they need to do is make it run at native 480p/30 and it should be fine on ps4. now, when will that ps4 port of ff16 be releasing? haha
@NotSoCryptic it isn't a waste of time if the publisher has nothing worthwhile going on anyways... what exactly are we looking forward to from EA these days?
@AverageGamer thats a great point. I am in the same boat i don’t buy any media physically. I do own all 3 consoles and i love my switch games digitally even more cause when i pick it up and leave the house i have my whole collection with me to play. I am not young, i am mid 30’s, so there is still some nostalgia for physical games. But i have been exclusive to digital for close to 11 years now if my math is right. No PS4 or Xbox one games were physical, i own a Digital PS5 and i couldn’t even tell you if my Series X disc drive works or not. I do like the refund as a just in case. I have only ever refunded on Xbox maybe 3-4 times. One was a pre order so not even sure that counts. But Sony is one of the market leaders and they can not have certain pro consumer features cause well they will still sell loads of product with or without it and i have no real issue with that, but do think it would be a nice friendly feature to offer. I have 30 plus hours into Street Fighter 6 and when some beats me with modern controls i get so upset i wish i could refund the game, hahaha we all know it don’t work that way. 😀
@HonestHick
‘I am not young, i am mid 30’s’
You made me laugh with this over breakfast 👍🏻
Believe me, compared to me, you are still young.
But a least we can both agree that gaming has no boundaries when it comes to age.
I’m like an excitable toddler come gaming time 👍🏻😂
@PSme Hahaha, man i am just happy to make someone laugh and not angry these days when it comes to gaming forums. 😀
I just assume most gamers on here are 16-25, but i know thats not the case for some of us. You got the right attitude, gaming has no age limit these days. Games are like movies in the sense of it’s just TV unwind time. No longer looked at as a kid’s toy. My boss was 63 and played candy crush on her phone during her lunch break. Haha
@HonestHick Agree👍🏻. As long as my brain, eyes and hands still connect and function, I will be a gamer!
And my mouth - gotta keep smiling after all!
Bit like your Boss - I play Pokémon on my switch during breaks - you should see people’s faces!!😂😂
Have a good one 👍🏻
It STILL doesn’t work properly on PS5. Cannot believe these issues haven’t been fully patched and they’re already focused on PS4.
My focus is now on Ubisoft’s Star Wars effort, given up with EA.
There’s potential benefit for next gen too. It makes them better programmers. And all the learnings they make from optimising the engine to get this to run on last gen can be used to optimise performance on next gen in this game… or the next.
Moon studios discussed this with Digital Foundry on the Ori & tWotW Switch port, how it enables them to massively improve performance on Xbox.
@Deadhunter it was playable and fun. People here just have a very narrow understanding what is playable and just want to hop on the internet complaint train, even if they haven't played it themselves. An actual experience always tops opinion.
@number1024 Go watch the Ori Will of the Wisps developer interview video on Digital Foundry where they specifically talk about all the optimisations and learnings they made for the Switch version which made them able to improve the Xbox version.
While i'm not a video game developer, I am a programmer, and figuring out how to get something running smoothly on lesser hardware is one of the best ways to improve your toolset, workflow and mindset. Often it's as simple as approaching a problem from a different direction, finding a more elegant solution, rather than brute forcing it with more powerful hardware as you may have done first time around.
But this isn't a surprise. Give any developer worth their salt an extra X months to refactor their code and come up with better solutions and they will improve it on subsequent iterations.
@PSme For me your comment on not being young made me laugh. For me mid thirties is young very young. I agree games are for all ages even pensioners like myself. Happy gaming to all ages. 😀😀😀
Why? Just use the resources to work on the next one. I know a lot of people still haven't been able to get a PS5, but it's time to leave the ps4 behind and push the current gen to its limits.
Why are people including the the author of this article struggling to understand how it'll run on ps4. They'll just remove the ray tracing, lower the resolution and maybe lower the draw distance. It really won't be difficult to achieve the same level of performance they have on the PS5 (which admittedly isn't great).
@ItsBritneyB_tch yeah it was a disappointment in my eyes too.
I just much preferred the first.
I finished survivor but as soon as I did I wanted rid while fallen order was one I was gutted to have finished and wanted more
@ActionPanther it runs fine, dont be daft
@ItsBritneyB_tch I must have different eyes to everyone else, I thought it looked great and ran fine
@tameshiyaku yeah,i really don't understand the 'barely ran on ps5' comments, I personally thought it looked great, and was far superior to fallen order.
@HonestHick my mums 78 and she plays candy crush 😂 she's amazed by the ps5 ,cant play the games but appreciates dem graphics ha ha I made her play resi evil in vr once, she nearly broke it ,she couldn't get it off her head quick enough.
'I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of playstation 4's suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened'.
I'm sure EA can get this running on PS4. But it doesn't mean they should. Get the next gen versions running properly before looking back at last gen. The Xbox VCR will surely implode running this
If they can run an acceptable version of this on PS4, then why don't we have a steady 60fps mode?
The game was certainly enjoyable if not overly different from the original but I encountered plenty of technical issues on PS5 not least some unforgivable load times which can surely only be worse on PS4. This is clearly not the port you’re looking for …
… so what’s next? How about The Witcher 3 on the Atari 2600 or even a game and watch (Just Google it, okay?) version of Cyberpunk 2097?
@Deadhunter I was thinking the exact same thing. I had zero issues other than the dynamic res looking a little soft at times.
An over stuffed coding mess on PS5 and Xbox Series...makes me wonder what the coding Wizards are going to strip.
@tallythwack Haha, yeah VR can be jarring for some. Candy Crush prints money. Seems like the modern day Tetris where everyone plays it even if they don’t play anything else. Mobile gaming rakes in cash cause the whole world has a phone. 😊
I almost bought this yesterday in the sale. But the price put me off. With a PSN discount of 25% it still comes in at £67.49, I thought nah. After reading a few comments here that it doesn't run that well I'm glad I didn't buy.
@Deadhunter it doesn’t run badly , few small bits of stuttering but some love to exaggerate. That’s on ps5 in performance mode, quality mode may have been worse but I thought it ran fine. On ps4 I can imagine long load times though.
@UltimateOtaku91
Interesting that they're porting it back onto the old stager.
And please, the Pro (especially with an internal SSD) would run this without a problem. As for the base PS4 with mechanical hard drive? Well, it'd be slower loading and with lower res visuals to keep the frame rate up but hardly a deal breaker.
As with all the usual PS5-eiliteism, if the game can run on a PS4 then why not?
Well considering how the current Series X and PS5 versions run…
This will be entertaining at least.
@get2sammyb But will it be as bad as Cyberpunk.
It runs like hell on PS5 so good luck to that.
@sanderson72 Have you played this on PS5? Even on Quality mode it runs poorly on current gen machines. If its barely acceptable on a Series S why do you think a PS4 Pro stands a chance? As for an SSD well the game doesn't need one so other then some quicker loading it wouldn't change much, finally if a game needs an SSD to work ok on a last gen machine then that's a very bad port.
It still struggles on PS5 and I played through 90% of it in resolution mode. I’m sure for the devs it’ll be a bit of a science experiment while for EA it’s just another cash grab. For me I’m interested to see the Xbox One’s attempt to run this.
Why? Let the PS4 go for Christ sakes. 10 years old.
@MaccaMUFC when every new console launches its already out of date compared to pc tech. This is why they are very cheap compared to a full on monster gaming rig.
Bloody hell. Maybe fix it on PS5 first so i can finally play it...
This is a strange move, but it's EA so....
