In arguably a dazzling demonstration of the new Apple iPhone 15 Pro’s raw horsepower, the PS5 and PS4 console title Death Stranding Director’s Cut is coming natively to the device. No, that’s not a typing error: the entirety of Kojima Productions’ seminal hiking sim will be available to play in the palm of your hands – as will Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Bonkers!
The tech titan explained: “Continuing Apple’s leadership in smartphone silicon, A17 Pro brings improvements to the entire chip, including the biggest GPU redesign in Apple’s history. The new CPU is up to 10 percent faster with microarchitectural and design improvements, and the Neural Engine is now up to 2x faster, powering features like autocorrect and Personal Voice in iOS 17.”
It added: “The pro-class GPU is up to 20 percent faster and unlocks entirely new experiences, featuring a new 6-core design that increases peak performance and energy efficiency. Now with hardware-accelerated ray tracing – which is 4x faster than software-based ray tracing – iPhone 15 Pro offers smoother graphics, as well as more immersive AR applications and gaming experiences. iPhone 15 Pro brings true-to-life gaming to the palm of users’ hands with console titles never before seen on a smartphone.”
Of course, as with all cutting-edge Apple products, it’ll cost you a small fortune to get involved. The iPhone 15 Pro will retail for £999/$999 at launch, and if you’d like to upgrade to a 6.7” screen, you’ll need to shell out £1,199/$1,199 for the Max model. You’ll also only get 128GB with the most basic option, so you’re probably going to need a lot more space if you’re planning to play Death Stranding on the move.
Nevertheless, it’s fascinating how the lines are now slowly getting blurred between standalone consoles and mobile games. The success of releases like Genshin Impact, a fully-fledged open world in its own right, has proven there’s a market for console-like experiences on the move – it’ll be interesting to see exactly how well the likes of Death Stranding perform on this latest crop of iPhones.

Battery will probably last 5 minutes lol
I mean the Rog Ally drains the battery in 1-2h in newer games depending on the mode and I assume that the iPhone has an even smaller battery than the Rog Ally
You're battery will last for 1 hour when playing. And the phone will be burned in your hands.
Even genshin makes my iPhone scolding hot. I think these will make the phone so hot it will stop working
Why would one want to play death stranding on a phone ? Or does one get a decent experience when connecting an iphone to big screen ? But of course there is the untapped potential of billions of people just owning a phone.
Personally I can only think of: listening to the songs using the in game player, or reading the story told in emails.
@gaston I have no idea other than the person wanting to intentionally have a terrible experience. Death Stranding is not something you should play on a phone lol
I think this might be a way forward for handheld gaming. It won’t negate the Switch, but might fill the void left by Xbox and PlayStations absence in the market.
It would be great if we had a mobile version of PS+, Game Pass and Steam without having to rely on cloud or streaming from a device. I’m talking native versions of the games for mobile devices with settings being configured based on your phone model.
All current gaming handhelds for PC games are £350ish, this is three times more expensive. It should be more powerful and have a better battery life at 3 hours or so I’d guess. And most of us have these expensive devices just being wasted for texts and browsing.
Add a dock to connect to TVs like a Switch does, as they already have controller support, and you’ve got yourself a great gaming device. And for those on the go, there are options from Razer and so forth that turn your phone into a proper gaming handheld.
I’d definitely support that.
I always wanted to play a walking simulator and a horror game with touch controls.
As others have said, the battery will probably drain quick. But it's definitely Impressive seeing modern console games being ported to such small devices.
Reminds me of how impressive I thought the PSP was back in the day, being able to run GTA etc.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Maybe is because I have the same Motorola since 2017 (still working perfectly let's go baby!!!) but spending 999 on a phone is something I'm never going to do, too poor for that 😂
nobody will actually play this game on iphone beyond just seeing how it runs.
If only Sony could get some of their old handheld games here with PSN integration (Trophy support). I’d much rather hook up a controller or similar than rely on streaming, or the restrictions of remote play on Portal.
But AAA games? Not likely. As others have said, it’ll likely overheat the device and kill the battery in 20 minutes, plus large cinematic games are just not suited to mobile play.
And after Vita, everyone said PS4 portable (digital version) was impossible
Who's publishing?
@mariomaster96 The battery will definitely be smaller, but an iPhone doesn’t have to run Window 11 and play a game at the same time. ROG Ally also don’t get the advantage of crazy low level optimization that you can only get in extreme closed environments like consoles and Apple products. As well as custom textures detail, LODs, resolution, built in upscaling… etc.
Do people play actual games on their iPhones…? Not Angry Birds etc but like, classic style video games? It does not seem like it would be fun to play on a phone compared to a TV.
Plus you're paying £1000 - £1200, where as a gaming console is circa £450.
Um………………….no. Thanks but that’s just a no from me.
@AverageGamer Agreed plus Metal + iOS is very efficient generally compared to a PC. Helps that Apple make the whole technology stack, both hardware and software.
Still I don't see my self using this much... other my Genshin Impact addiction, when away from home
@GuttyYZ You’re paying no additional cost if you were already planning on buying an iPhone, like the hundreds of millions of people that already do?
It’s crazy seeing people trying everything possible to dismiss this, even though they’ll probably buy a Switch 2 that will have a worse CPU, a worse GPU and probably worse controllers that’s you can buy to click into your phone(just like a joy-con but not rubbish).
The only issue for phone games is the aspect ratio, phones have terribly aspect ratios for games compared to the standard 16:9. Unlike streaming games from the cloud(being output at 16:9) these games will be native and be able to use the correct aspect ratio so it will be considerably better than streaming games but still not quite as good as being 16:9(or 16:10)
I'll believe it when I see it. I doubt you can play for hours. I'd rather just buy a dedicated gaming device for that price.
@AverageGamer Phones all use ARM architecture too, which is way more power efficient than the X86 architecture the handheld PC’s need to use.
@Saucymonk yes they will. people watch movies on a phone the young will also play these.
@CutchuSlow " I'd rather just buy a dedicated gaming device for that price."
you are in luck. Not only does this play games but it also makes calls to your friends and family. hard to believe but this is the original point of a "phone".
@ChrisDeku I know man I don't pay for my PS5 because I always was going to play video games. In the end you still pay money with this logic everything is free.
Whilst it's noteworthy such games will be sold on an iPhone, I don't understand the fuss of an iPhone being able to run them. These games were designed to run on what is now a 10 year old console and the likes of Steamdeck plays such games for less than half the price of what this will be.
That said, personally I have no interest in playing such games on a phone
@Flaming_Kaiser If a PS5 didn’t play games you wouldn’t own one. If an IPhone didn’t play games there’d still be a billion people wanting one.
If you’re thinking of buying a new iPhone just to play these games, you absolutely should not. If you were planning on buying a new premium phone anyway, then it’s probably worth considering this point when making your purchasing decision. If you were already planning on buying the most expensive iPhone available every year it’s released then you’re in luck, this is a straight up bonus.
For everyone who doesn’t comprehend why people would want to game on their phones:
How big was the PSP screen again? 4.3 inches?
And the Vita? 5 inches, right?
glances at the 6.1 inch iPhone 15 Pro screen and the 6.7 inch Pro Max screen
Yeah. Those people are just bonkers to expect gaming on those devices. And connecting PS5 controllers to iPhones is just impossible, guess this is all a pipe dream…
I’m very sure previous and current PSP/Vita owners here wouldn’t be total and complete hypocrites in pooh-poohing mobile gaming, wouid they? Naaaaah…
(Full disclosure: Yes, I owned a PSP and still own a Vita. No, I don’t mobile game except on my Switch these days because I’m old and my eyes suck. But good god, the amount of people here who don’t understand what a milestone this is, especially with HARDWARE RAY TRACING capability on a friggin iPhone…)
Enjoy your brief playing time and a empty battery. Or connect a cable.
iPhone games get lost to time so quickly. Essentially all of the good games are gone now because of iOS updates. Phones are an awful as a meaningful way to play games.
This is also a potential horrible distraction for game development and toning games down making their playstyle suitable for a phone without a controller. Yes, the tech is cool. No, this is not a good thing for us.
Never was one for mobile games, except for my youth playing Kirby's Dreamland and Tetris on the old grey monotone Gameboy!
@Sveakungen or Apple, the largest company on earth. considered this.
I find it odd people are getting upset about this.
~~~Sony looks at Portal handheld device. Throws it in the trash.
@SonOfPSXDave it would be pretty sweet to be able to play NSO gameboy/GBA on an iphone. that would be an excellent collab. I'm not interested in playing real, new games on a phone but an old classic? Yup.
Lol, I played Death Stranding on a Steam Deck and gave up after 30 mins. That screen was too small and I couldn't see or read much of the stuff that was happening in the game. Good luck Apple haha.
@Loamy The battery life is certainly a valid critique, though the Pro Max life (which I’m jumping to after my non-Pro 13) is pretty fantastic! And micro transactions are just evil, so glad for releases like this which make that a non-issue. Tho Assassins Creed makes me nervous…
Another bit folks missed is that, since hardware ray tracing is in this…it’s pretty much confirmed that Apple’s M3 processor will also have that. Which will be a major thing when the M3 Macs come out later this year or early next. Apple’s putting some effort into making Mac gaming a viable liability, and my piddly little M2 Mac Mini holds its own for a $499 desktop compy.
Either way, the knee-jerk “hurr durr wHy gAmE On PhOnEZ” reactions are pretty amusing!
@dskatter sony fansites take any threat to the playstation VERY seriously. More than anyone else they circle those wagons so to speak.
I think playstation need to move to portables system after playstation 6, the mobile cpu will be more than enough to play most games at 60 fps at that time.
Ps5 graphics (like demon's souls & ratchet ps5) is already good enough, I want more innovation on gameplay, design, and physic rather than just plain boring 4K/8K & 120 fps or whatever for next-gen machine.
And yes, what apple achieve is really cool here, although I'm more impressed by the iphone 15 usb-c connection rather than the cpu graphical upgrade, finally 1 cable is enough to charge nearly every gadgets I have, lol.
I think this is pretty cool.
I´m not the target for this, but it´s nice that more people will be able to play console games (I just don't know if Death Stranding would be the ideal game for this, but I know more games will follow).
And about the screen size, it´s possible to connect a phone to a tv, and mirror the screen.
@Cashews I have a phone and I don't like apple phones.
@dskatter there is a disconnect to what you are saying and what other people are thinking. the iphone hardware is great, but the problem lies in porting home console games that were designed for a large screen (tv) to a phone... yes, even a 6.7" screen is far too small for a "home console" game since the ui and various elements were not designed for it. that isn't to say that games designed specifically for the iphone couldn't be good (with a controller mind you) because they could. that is why the psp and vita library still look and play well today — the vast majority of games on those platforms were designed specificially for the handheld experience and that also includes the art direction and design, as well as the gameplay that was tailored to the control pad and buttons available. ergonomics is crucial with handheld gaming but a cell phone is literally incapable of handling it by default for most AAA games (unless you pair up a controller). death stranding was certainly not designed for a mobile device and would be the last place one would go to play it. playing most modern pc and console games on a handheld just isn't not a good experience generally speaking since there are better alternatives (playing them on native hardware of course)... now if apple releases a tv dock, suddenly your iphone magically turns into a "switch" and you have more options at your disposal. this still doesn't solve handheld mode problems but it's better than nothing. on the other hand, nintendo takes into account handheld and docked modes when they design their games so they fare pretty well on both fronts. if nintendo ported its switch games to iphone, that would be a better pairing.
@Porco tl;dr please.
Also, phone to tv adapters exist. I use one with my iPad for example.
@number1024 the new chip uses 3nm tech which is a first for any chip and brings power and efficiency gains. I think the 15 pro has 23 hours and the max 29 hours video playback which is considerably better than the 14 pro’s.
DS runs on a Steam Deck so not sure this is impressive.
@HotGoomba best sarcasm ever
I loved Death Stranding but I just can't imagine it having the same impact on a tiny screen. Impressive, if they can run it native with decent battery life and without burning your hands.
Edit: I just remembered those long cut scenes too...
@Kienda the cost doesn't reflect the battery etc. Phones cost more due to other reasons like the screen etc. A powerful phone doesn't mean the battery thermals etc will work well with pc/console gaming.
Death Stranding is not just a ps5/4 game. It's on PC and Xbox
@koffing @carlos82 The fuss of an iPhone being able to run them is cause it a literally phone. An SoC that will probably have a TDP of 8. It not something like laptop parts being shoved into a smaller chassis which is what consoles, and the Steam Deck is. It a bunch mark of how far ARM chips have come. Just like the Steam Deck was a benchmark of how far integrated GPU/APUs have come.
It's great watching that vid and all; but we all know 99 out of every 100 owners will use it predominantly for aimlessly scrolling social feeds while taking a dump.
Doubt itll be a true console experience. Probably close but not fully. I bet the games would have to be tailored specifically for the iphone 15 pro. Or would they stick that m2 chip into mac books in the future to also run those games? Mobile gaming doesnt appeal to console gamers so you have two different type of audiences
@number1024 thats why streaming is better with xbox games pass. You just use the phone screen like how samsung promotes it.
That's really impressive and a nice way to showcase how good the tech in the new Pro model iPhone is.
@Cashews No they won't!
