Dark fantasy Souls-like Lords of the Fallen just got a new patch on PS5, addressing performance and stability issues, changing how New Game Plus works for the masochists already there. Plus, between consoles, crossplay has been introduced, so now PlayStation and Xbox players alike can mope around Mournstead together.
Developer Hexworks, working at break-neck speed, posted the patch notes to Reddit and showed some of its workings. In response to fan feedback and from today's patch onward, players now have two options after completing a playthrough: Either proceed to the next level of New Game (+1) or replay the current with character, items, and progression intact while resetting the world. This would be perfect for Trophy Hunters who don't want to deal with the increased difficulty and hardship.
Another patch has been promised for Thursday, and we're pretty intrigued by everything about this one, although we're nowhere near beating our first run. Previously, New Game Plus took away virtually all of the game's Vestiges (respawn points, think Bonfires in Dark Souls), which is admittedly pretty hardcore. They will now be gradually stripped back instead, and by New Game +3, all but the major hubs of Skyrest Bridge and Adyr's Shrine will disappear. Hexworks feels this is a happy medium between usability and its original, brutal vision.
Finally, a "New Game Plus modifier system" will let players customize their difficulty in fun ways for a further challenge, likely to be a hit with the streamer crowd. Modifiers like a "hardcore" mode, where dying once deletes your save, were teased, and a release is planned before the end of the year.
Have you been playing Lords of the Fallen? What do you think of the changes implemented in today's patch and how New Game Plus functions? Resign yourself to doing the same thing over again in the comments section below.

That's actually a really nice change and I think all Soulslikes should have it.
Cross play was already there from day one. Performance was already decent and i did not notice any difference last night when i was having my arse handed to me. Brilliant game and i really can not see why people are being so harsh on it especially the so called fans of the genre. Easily one of the best souls type games along side lies of p.
@Northern_munkey Just curious. How far are you in the game? I don't want to spoil anything for you, because you are enjoying it, and I was too earlier in the game, but this game needed and needs the harsh criticism, and I'm glad the devs are taking the time to address, because it needs it.
Also, you might think the performance is decent, and good on you it might be on PS, but having played it on Xbox and then PC. Xbox was abysmal, and PC isn't without its issues.
@Constable_What i'm nearing the end of pilgrims perch i think. I spent a fair bit of time trying the different classes out before embarking out past the 1st boss. I am playing the ps5 game and using performance mode. Quality mode looks beautiful but i'm all about 60fps in these games. I personaly have not noticed any significant performance issues thus far and i'm not saying there are none just that either i'm too busy enjoying myself to notice or i'm just not that picky. I agree that its great to see the devs listening to the gamers and more devs should follow suit as thats 2 games (lies of p being the other) where devs have listened and responded accordingly. I'm sorry you are not enjoying the game but i'm honestly loving it so far and its in my top 10 games.
@Northern_munkey Pilgrims Perch is very early in the game. I was still enjoying the game at that point a lot, and aside from some VERY weirdly placed enemies (not talking enemies that are inconvenient or anything like that, I'm talking about an enemy that is an actual miniboss a little bit later in the game that's absurdly close to an important NPC) Pilgrim' Perch was a good area.
The performance gets worse and worse, with the worst of it being the final two areas. My PC did not like those areas, and I have a great rig.
I really wanna hear your opinion once you've beaten it. That's either when people decide they loved the game despite its faults, or really just hated it and wants it to change.
I'm totally open to CIG winning me back. They are making a great start!
@Constable_What its probably going to take me a while due to work and other time consuming dutys plus i refuse to use guides as i just love to try and figure these things out. If i can put up with elden rings performance issues which are far greater than this games i dont see the rest of the game putting me off. I'm confused about the cross play as on the first weekend i was invaded by multiple gamers and only a couple had the ps5 logo next to their names so i'm assuming it was deactivated and is now being reinstated? I have next week off so i'm hoping to dedicate some time to this and maybe get to the golf course too weather permitting.
@Northern_munkey Crossplay was enabled for PC and console, but not console to console.
Yeah take your time with it. If you don't use a guide...you will have no choice but to. I didn't use a guide either, but I wish I did. And on the plus side of that, the game seems like it will only get better as the devs work on it, so I might be there with you in FINALLY loving it once you're done. Lol
I don't really have the perspective to say what I think is the worse performing game I think. I played on Xbox Series X, and oh man...it was really really bad. Textures wouldn't load in, and the game would struggle to maintain 30FPS in performance mode due to the game being launched on that platform without the day one patch. To the devs credit, they were able to get the patch issued a few hours later.
On PC, the game is weirdly optimized. There's no option to choose what kind of DLSS to use, there's no option to outright turn off raytracing, and the game doesn't support Frame Generation. It is still unstable, but playable on my rig at about 70 - 90 FPS, and even locked at 60 it will not maintain that, so something is wrong there. It is a looker of a game for sure though; on PC I don't know what looks better this or Lies of P.
Hope you enjoy the upcoming weekend, and hope the weather is golf appropriate as well!
@Constable_What cheers buddy 👍
@Northern_munkey I've just started to play the game 2 days ago after finishing Lies of P which was amazing. This one looks good to however I am quite early in the game , trying to beat the first boss Pieta. Experienced only one major crash , unfortunately during my best attempt on this boss which was a bit frustrating. What level were you when you fought this boss? I am level 25 and honestly I feel underlevelled for this fight. She is tough for a first boss I think.
@NoToSheep Yes the second phase is vey though even with the npc help. It feels like I'm doing very little damage to her. I'm definitely going to farm in Umbral maybe a 10 level or so the do more damage. Do you recommend dodging her attacks or trying to parry is the better option here?
@Tatarimokke level 27 and i used the mangler axes as they do fire damage..just keep dodging around her and be patient..she is a right pain in the arse.
@Northern_munkey Oh all right I didn't even pay attention to the axe at all. I'll definitely give it a go then. Thanks for the advice!
