Another media application joins the ranks today, 5th October, on PS5 and PS4. The Sony Pictures Core app, formerly Bravia Core on Sony's smart TVs, is rolling out on PlayStation consoles, giving you access to the company's wide range of films on demand.
After signing up, you'll be able to rent or buy thousands of Sony Pictures movies, as you'd expect. However, it's also launching on PS5 and PS4 with some added benefits. As noted on the PS Blog, users will gain early access to select films. For the UK, France, Germany, and Japan, the first example of this will be Gran Turismo. Additionally, if you buy this film via Sony Pictures Core, you'll gain in-game currency for Gran Turismo 7, usable to purchase cars seen in the movie.
What's more, PS Plus Premium/Deluxe members will have access to a catalogue of 100 films to stream on demand at no extra cost. Currently, this range of films includes 21, Black Hawk Down, District 9, Django Unchained, Hellboy, Night of the Living Dead, The Social Network, and more. Other PS Plus benefits for all members are coming later, too.
Creating an account on Sony Pictures Core is super easy via your console, as you'll be able to link up your PSN account and get started super fast.
What do you think? Can you squeeze in another media app? Let us know if you'll use Sony Pictures Core in the comments section below.

If there are interesting things on PS+ Premium before they are on other streaming services - I don't see why not.
Otherwise idk
If this is included with the PS+ subscription then the increase now makes sense
Edit: Never mind it's for Premium/Deluxe only it seems and not extra.
This is close to a Sony Pictures streaming service
This is a nice bonus, but I'm still waiting for them to integrate Crunchyroll into the subscription
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Toilet_Goat Same. Fully agreed. It seems like a no brainer.
They're in a unique position among the big three as owners of gaming, movie and anime IP + the streaming services to provide access to each.
I'd love to see a Bloodborne anime on Crunchyroll. I'd happily merge my subscriptions too just to have it all under one payment.
Wow.... I was hoping and praying that something in this article was going to have a mention of psvr2 video content... but no.. you continue to disappoint... whatever happened to Rad player...
Aye im up for some of this since my premium ps subscription seems worthless so far.
I wonder what free movies there will be. Doesn’t hurt to try it out, I suppose.
Nice! I don't consume many new films any more, but I can never turn my nose up at free stuff!
Hopefully this needs to be downloaded off the store and not forced upon us taking up a space on the home screen.
@UltimateOtaku91 Downloading it atm. It's just another app on the media tab from what I can tell.
I thought it was inevitable that Sony would bring more of their other media to Playstation and/or even their Sub Service. I can see a time when Sony have a Sub Service offering Games, Movies/TV and even Music. It would set their service apart from say Microsoft or Nintendo and/or compete with Netflix, Amazon and Apple...
Sony own Crunchyroll too so a Sony 'Media' Sub service offering Sony Games, Movies, TV and/or Music seems like an obvious progression...
@Shepherd_Tallon Well they cant because Crunchyroll has already a Deal with... Gamepass lol. A real genius Move by Sony
They should add full access to PS+ members for rentable films (meaning we could stream rentable films for $), and then give discounts for purchasing (the way they do with games on PSN). Use the giant PS+ install base as evangelists for the service. It'd help make sense of the PS+ price increase and get the word out naturally without needing to advertise nearly as much.
Do the same for a Sony Music streaming sort of app in the same way.
I'm a physical advocate and always will be, but I'll tell you Bravia Core is the best streaming app I've ever used. As long as you let it hit your internet hard, it's the closest streaming will ever come to blu ray quality.
Streamed some of the Resident Evil movies in the 4K IMAX Enhanced dts format and it's very impressive!
Ok this is actually a neat value for PS Plus subscribers. It's not directly game related but it is a neat benefit
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah just read on the blog it gets added to the media tab, I like my home screen just for the games lol
Also they have said that select Anime from Crunchyroll will be coming to the service as well so I think they will slowly merge the services at some point, like signing into Crunchyroll with your playstation ID and if your a plus member then you get access to everything on Crunchyroll.
The bigger and more popular Anime becomes then it's just a matter of time before we see Anime based off popular playstation IP's, even Tomb Raider and DMC are getting animes, plus look at how much teh Cyberpunk anime boosted the games sales, it's a no brainer.
@MagisterMagi The gamepass deal was after Sony took them over and it's just to include Crunchyroll for gamepass users for 3 months only, there's nothing stopping sony from adding Crunchyroll to their own service or making Anime based off popular playstation IP's to put onto that service.
@UltimateOtaku91 No, they had a a new GP perk as recently as July this year. The Deal aint over so PlayStation wouldn't be able to add CR perks to PS+ even if they want to
https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2023/07/20/game-pass-ultimate-crunchyroll-premium-perk/amp/
@MagisterMagi Yes it was for 75 days so that's now up. But even still you don't know what the deal includes, just because they had a timed deal with gamepass doesn't mean it can't come to playstation, there's some games that release on Playstation Plus and Gamepass at the same time so not every deal includes exclusion policies.
@UltimateOtaku91 Oh I agree. I just want to see games on my home screen. Nothing else.
I hadn't read about anime being added to it.
Where did you read that?
@UltimateOtaku91 They had that deal for years now lol, and Sony bought CR in 2020. probably signed a long-term agreement with MS. Sony Music issnt known for really working with PlayStation. They publish Games on PC and Switch all the time akd skip PS4/5.
Cherry pick my favs on physical 4K but this will be a nice added free benefit for premium subs and possibly to a slightly lesser degree for Essential and Extra at a later date. I'll use the many selected free movies on Premium for like a free rental and if really enjoy that free rental I'll grab the physical 4K for it. Care far more about games on home console but I'll take a free movie every now and then that I ain't seen before, why not
@Shepherd_Tallon on the playstation blog post towards the bottom.
This is just the beginning, and we plan to evolve the offerings and benefits of Sony Pictures Core over time – including a selection of hit anime content from Crunchyroll. We’re looking forward to more exciting things to come, so stay tuned!
@BeerIsAwesome True - but things are certainly a lot different today. The infrastructure has improved as well as the market, the way more and more people are accessing their favourite media etc.
Its like saying Nintendo didn't really succeed with VR so shouldn't or won't reconsider VR ever again but things change. In the 90's, you'd never have thought that you could game with people all over the world or buy your games digitally. Never have thought that games could be 'fixed' after release etc.
It seems that Gaming is following Movies/Music into that more 'digital' realm - not only for ease/reach, but also for sustainability, for environmental concerns, for reducing costs (no waste products, no fossil fuels used in manufacturing/distribution, no plastics etc that can end in landfill) etc.
In the past 15yrs, we have seen Netflix rise and more and more Sub Services have become established. So many people consume their media via the internet, buy 'digitally' if not on a Sub service and the 'instancy' of it - can decide to buy/rent any new film without needing to go out to a store, watch wherever you are on whatever device you have - don't need a DVD player and a TV etc so the market has changed a LOT in the past 15yrs and I'd say 2020 Pandemic also helped push people more to Digital.
So I think its inevitable for Sony to go this route and 'compete' with Netflix, Apple, Amazon etc for your 'Subscription' money to access Sony's Media.
Not pumped on the titles, but having watched a few trailers of 4k hdr stuff this looks like the best quality home streaming Ive seen - certainly a cut above disney plus and netflix 4k content.
Nice option to have, even if I dont use it much.
@UltimateOtaku91 Bloody hell I missed that part!
Nice one.
Nice app. Just watched some trailers and making of BTS stuff. Not under the “Studio Accees” tab that’s stupid it doesn’t tell you what movie the stuff is from.🤪 I’d never pay $20-$30 to “own” a digital version of a movie but their rental prices are on par with Amazon and Apple. And the app was under the media tab in an ad for the Gran Turismo movie so not pushy at all, a little hard to find actually for a new app. If it weren’t for this article I wouldn’t have found it probably ever.🤷🏻♂️
And speaking of articles, I’m reminded of this one that recommends NOT streaming on PS5 or PS4 b/c the electrical cost is 50-100x more than a dedicated streamer like Roku or Chromecast. Maybe Sony should make a more widely available app for this?
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2022/10/as-energy-prices-soar-consider-an-alternative-to-video-streaming-on-ps5-ps4
Just tried using the Sony Pictures Core app for the first time after agreeing to all the policy stuff but it signs me out of PSN automatically and just left with a circle going round and round for ages on the app. Can't get in to use it
@MagisterMagi No the deal isn't constant, they get the deal every now and then, in the article you linked it says
Starting today, Game Pass Ultimate members can embrace their inner otaku with 75-days free of Crunchyroll Mega Fan
So, currently there is no Crunchyroll perk for gamepass.
4 times tried now, everytime automatically signs me out of my PSN. Maybe its getting over loaded with so many trying to get in for the first time I dunno. Try it another time maybe
I was wondering how long it would be until Sony leveraged other aspects of their business to lift them all. This is a nice benefit to premium and one I thought would happen long ago. They can do the same with music, too.
I would think a streaming service like this would be a great bonus perk for a company to add to a subscription service that just received a price increase.
Unfortunately, Sony is not that company.
You have to pay for the higher tiers of PS+ (which PlayStation has recently made unaffordable to a lot of customers), and even then you only get a handful of old movies for free.
@MagisterMagi Can you quote the particular part from the link you provided that states that them having a deal with GP means they can't do a deal with any other service, or add it to their own service, please.
@UltimateOtaku91 It says in the link they posted to make sure and claim the perk by the 20th October 2023 so technically isn't up yet but it is pretty close to it.
@Kevw2006 Ah I see, I saw the article was from 3 months ago so assumed the 75 days was up by now.
@Kevw2006 Thats usally how it works mate. PS+ Extra has the Ubisoft Deal, Gamepass has the EA one and neither have both.
Some of these are the exclusive 4K IMAX Enhanced versions of movies! That's a big selling factor!
As long as the streaming movies don't take any dedicated hard drive space other than to download the app, I'm in.
I had about 20 movies that I purchased on their old video app, which they abandoned. You can still watch the movies on PS5 but playback is awful (lots of buffering on fibre broadband) and random episodes are missing from tv shows. Not interested in this new app one bit.
Sony Core would have to join MA for me to even think about buying a movie through them.
Only interested if they have the emoji movie.
Not avaiable in Hungary, why I'm not surprised?
Kind of lame. It seems Bravia Core and Sony Pictures Core are two different things. I have a separate account for each, cannot combine them, and the login for one doesn't work for the other. I hope they merge them some day.
I might give it a try over the weekend.
So can you only use this on PS? As in, I can't access films on my laptop / mobile too under same subscription? I'd say I watch 50% on tv and 50% on other devices so if I can't use elsewhere it's pretty pointless for me
I will try out the service, but I prefer to watch movies on 4K blu ray when available.
The ps+ films aren't a bad selection, though obviously we are quite spoiled by large film selections nowadays it feels quite small by today's standards.
don't get happy guys I just tested it out and the free movies are old and who will rent movies out when there's a lot of free movies app you can get on a firestick or cellphone
Sadly this isn't of any use for me. It would be if the movies were able to be downloaded in for 4k blu-ray quality instead of having to stream(assuming the movie had a 4k blu-ray version).
Would be such a very particular selection that number of good movies would probably be pretty low.
I can guarantee you I'm not buying or renting movies like this. I'll watch for free, but I'm not buying digital movies.
i remember when xbox was mocked when talking about movies on consoles
Is there a list with supported countries?
@NinjaSixx u must not read blog it will be improved over time with Crunchyroll stuff it new give it time
@TheCollector316 it work for me I had all my movies from core
Dont work for me .... Loading , and black screen ..
One potential problem I see is that Sony has already started making deals with all the other streaming services. So I wonder about the likes of HBO’s The Last of Us, Netflix’s Horizon Zero Dawn, Amazon’s God of War, Peacock’s Twisted Metal, etc, etc… It would be great to have all the PlayStation shows and movies under this one Sony app, and then to give access to them for PS+ subscribers on their PS5.
I’m not sure how these contracts work, and likely they’re each unique, but I suspect at least some of these deals specify that the outside production entity (such as HBO for example) has exclusive rights to keeping the show on their platform. But hopefully Sony had the foresight to keep rights to these shows for their own service.
@MikeOrator they said other benefits for all ps plus comes later lol probably discount 😂
@hawk26 there is no subscription its a app lol where can buy and rent movies
@Toot1st xbox has alot of apps and still offers movies and TV series but not free
Tried to sign up 3 times last night just to take advantage of the free stuff but Sony must’ve known what I was doing, error error error f* it
@TheCollector316 its all the same just give them time.to change over
Just 100 mostly mediocre movies included for ps delux. Not really worth it.
@Falkirk4life Yeah sorry I know what it is - just seems like you can then only watch that content via PS4 / PS5 (unlike say Netflix / prime video / apple etc), which limits it considerably
@Toot1st they were mocked because multimedia was the only thing they talked about when announcing the Xbox one. They barely talked about games at all.
@Toilet_Goat now if they do this, I am immediately upgrading from Extra to Premium.
Add crunchyroll for premium members
It has blind fury for plus members. Thats all you need.
Well there not free as PS Plus is a subscription service so thats wrong plus the films are from about 10 years ago on a serious note though you need to get a dictionary and look up what the word "free" means as everytime you say "this months free games" etc its a subscription thats paid for so if it is free i want a back dated refund
@RIGGOR_MORTIS free also means "at no additional cost". Which dictionary are you using? Its meaning is clear in the context. There are movies that you can buy, rent or watch at no additional cost, i.e. for free.
