Update: Following the leaks overnight, Ubisoft has now confirmed Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition is indeed in development. More news will be shared in early 2024, but the publisher is "dedicated to making it an experience that truly honors the legacy of the original". Ubisoft says the version that got out via its subscriptions service to the point where it was briefly playable was an early build that isn't "indicative of the final game".
Original article: A 20th-anniversary edition of Beyond Good & Evil leaked — and then even became briefly playable — overnight through an Xbox Achievement listing, suggesting a re-release of the PS2 classic is imminent. Exophase is tracking Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One versions for a 20th Anniversary Edition, with complete Achievement lists attached; this usually hints at a full release in the near future, with PS5, PS4 versions pretty much a certainty.
Following the Exophase listing, the game's Xbox Store page revealed extra details like a 4K resolution at 60 frames-per-second with "improved graphics, controls, and audio, along with brand-new autosave and cross-save features". There's also a new speedrun mode, the aforementioned Trophies, and an anniversary gallery.
To really seal the deal, the 20th Anniversary Edition then even became playable for a short time via Ubisoft+ on Xbox, so this new version is very much happening.
First released for PS2 in November 2003, you play photojournalist Jade as she attempts to uncover an alien conspiracy. The game received a PS3 remaster and sequel in Beyond Good & Evil 2 was announced years ago, but it has yet to see the light of day. Are you interested in returning to the first game? I can’t wait for this! It sucks its such an underrated game because it’s a classic. The listing also said there’s a new treasure hunt across the planet revealing details about jades past which is exciting. I actually thought when this leaked it would be a straight port of the hd remaster so them putting actual work into this and having new content is very welcome.
I guess Ubisoft takes the lead in accidental game announcement leaks.
Since I don't play games below 4k60fps, I've been waiting for 20 years to play this for the first time. The future is now.
Now with inverted aim? I couldn't play the old "remaster" cause of that.
I will play it for sure. Always wanted to, but didn't had the time on my dying PS3.
20th Anniversary edition, now with added Ubisoft adverts mid-game.... can't wait
A fantastic game.I remember being so wowed by the graphics, particularly the water when I played this the very first time.
Played it through again during lockdown but probably won’t pick this up. Still, for anyone who hasn’t played it before this is definitely a good way in!
Oh nice. Can’t believe it’s already been 20 years since the sequel was announced. Here’s to another 20!
So are they going to lock it behind a service i really don't need. If you release it as a standalone release then I'll bite.
"A Ubisoft Original"
Why?😂
We know it's developed by you guys, why add this?😂. I find it so weird. Far cry 6 and AC mirage have the same thing as well.
Is it an attempt to be taken more seriously or what?😂.
@homelesscretin Hideo Kojima wants to have a word 😉
Will be buying, I first had this on the Gamecube back in the day and it was fantastic then.
@Czar_Khastik Hahaha very good.
Only update this game ever needed was being able to invert Y axis separately from the X axis on the camera controls…
@Jswift56 It's been a while since I've played MGSV, but didn't every single mission start with opening credits or something?😂.
Every single individual mission. Wasn't the end of the world or anything but I found it so funny. In the span of like 5 seconds you see Kojima's name like 12 times or something 😂
@homelesscretin I saw something about that recently. It had something to do with the fact that the game originally supposed to be an episodic release.
When everything got pulled together into one game, Kojima left the credits sequences due to time constraints, if memory serves me correctly.
I gladly take this over the sequel, which I already gave up on a long time ago thanks to what it has currently become.
Exciting! As long as it’s not a totally broken port, I’d love to jump back into this. It still has a load of novel mechanics, and the gameplay mix should still be great fun.
Didnt we get a 10th anniversary release too? Will we hit 30 years before the sequel? Ubi has fumbled this series hard
I overlooked this for many years. I should just play it.
I never played this back in the day but I for sure will now. I hope the release is soon!
it was very fun. but you know, its a game from another era. not sure it aged that well.
we will see
@Rob_230 I think in order to call it a series, there’d have to be more than one game released. Unless you consider the remasters as separate games. In that case we’ll have a trilogy! 🤣
I found myself surprisingly engaged when I got the HD version as a ps plus pickup on ps3. Despite the rough controls & rougher camera i wanted to see more,only finally stopped in my tracks rather lost in one of the maze like areas of laser traps & guards etc.
If they've updated those aspects,would actually make the first Ubisoft game I'd be interested in since Rayman Legends!
One of my favorite PS2 games. Definitely picking up this version.
@GamingFan4Lyf It was just because the story was structured like a television show, where the missions were described as episodes, as opposed to previous entries being structured more like a film.
a half-assed upscale of the ps3 hd remaster, but with numerous bugs and performance issues? this should be fun.
@homelesscretin It most likely to separate the difference between licensed IP (Star Wars and Avatar) and Original IP (Far Cry, Assassin Creed… etc)
@TripleKing333
The weird X and Y deal is what kept me from finishing BG&E on PS2. Then the PS3 hd version had the same X and Y deal so I passed.
It's so unplayable to pick looking up to look up only to then needing to look right to see to my left. Hopefully any new release will have normal X and Y setting choices.
I never played this, but something gives me the feeling that it’s much ado about nothing. I hear it referred to as underrated but I suspect it may actually be overhyped. 😅 I don’t know. I suspect there’s a bit of rose-tinted spectacle treatment going on. It’s one of those unusual circumstances of a game whose popularity and legend has actually swelled over the years and now is spoken of in hushed tones but at the time was a commercial failure with some scattered critical accolades.
Remaster dam! Why aren't we getting the 2nd one that we seen a trailer on almost a decade ago at e3? It really does seem gaming is catching up with Hollywood on reboots and remasters because they have ran out of ideals. I simply belive they have no creative thinkers no more and half to cash in on the older people's creative product because they can't come up with their own product. I dident know when I beat a game on a ps2 or ps3 or hell even ps1. That when I'm in my 40s they expect you to play them again.
@NoCode23 Yeah I played it on X360 and it was a nightmare. I powered through it and enjoyed the story a lot but it would have been so much better if they put it a bit more effort.
Just clean it and make it good to control don't give us a mess like XIII and the development hell like with Prince of Persia.
@homelesscretin
Think all of their games are now going to branded with A Ubisoft Original in there
@Flaming_Kaiser
I have no idea what’s happening with the sands of time remake by this point they were supposed to be altering the game but haven’t given us any news for a few years now
@AverageGamer
All of their games are going to branded with A Ubisoft Original now though I think
@Dragoon1994 The game looked nice already why not clean it up, more FPS, better textures, higher resolution and lighting, ray tracing and you are done. Why invent the wheel a second time. 😑
@Flaming_Kaiser
I dunno probably to do with all the complaints people were doing about the character models
@Dragoon1994 I still remember FF10 on the PS4 clean it up patch it and ship. The game wasn't even that ugly to begin with but somehow Ubisoft gets so it looks worse. I hope they don't do a XIII here. 😆
