Revealed through her personal Twitter account, Bonnie Jean Mah has joined God of War developer Sony Santa Monica Studio as a narrative director. Previously, Mah had spent a lot of time working on another franchise that can be shortened to GoW — Gears of War. She was the property's franchise narrative manager and later franchise narrative director at The Coalition. That's a lot of narrative.
Most recently, Mah was working on an unannounced open world RPG at TiMi Montreal — a studio owned by Tencent. She was also narrative lead and lead writer on Xbox Games Studios-published Age of Empires 4, and she started in the games industry as a writer and narrative designer on Warhammer 40k: Space Marine, all the way back in 2008.
"I'm SO excited to share my news: I’ve joined @SonySantaMonica as a Narrative Director. I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this team and studio," Mah writes on social media.
We don't yet know what project Mah will be assigned to at Santa Monica Studio, but it's fair to assume that her position means she'll have a lot of influence over how the game's story is shaped. Hopefully we learn more about the team's next game in the relatively near future.
What do you want from Santa Monica Studio going forward? More God of War, or something new? Recall your axe in the comments section below.

Maybe for Cory’s long-mooted sci-fi action game?
Is Gears of War known for its narrative prowess? I’m not familiar with the franchise but nothing about it came across that way, looking at it from the outside.
@Th3solution can only speak for the original trilogy but they were strong for the time (2006-2011) although it was a pretty low bar back then
@Th3solution wouldnt say narrative prowess but the 1st and the 2nd were both bloody good games. Never played past those 2 so i cant comment on the quality of the rest.
Those credits are not exactly inspiring…
@Th3solution I have played them all and I thought they were all pretty good.
I wouldn't say the narrative is bad at all - but not Oscar-worthy or anything either. I'd say it's kind of typical military action sci-fi with a little bit of a dystopian vibe given some of the corruption within the "powers that be". The voice acting it really good across the whole series, so that helps.
I would say the series strong suit was more the intense firefights.
I am not really sure why Gears 4 & 5 were panned so much by fans other than the fact that the original trilogy had more of a darker tone than the original trilogy. Narratively, it makes sense since the games takes place after decades of rebuilding - where the original trilogy took place after years of destruction due to war.
Absolutely agree, @GamingFan4Lyf. Nothing more to add... 😂
@LordAinsley The bar for storytelling was imo higher back then because developers still tried to do as much as possible without lazy cutscenes.
The bar was lower for lip sync , animations etc
N.i.c.e more talents is always welcome.god of war ragnarok🐐 👑 kratos.word up son
@Fiendish-Beaver I'd also add that The Coalition are Unreal Engine wizards. Probably the closest thing anyone has to games reaching the same level of competence with the engine as Epic itself.
not good she was narrative director for gears 4 and 5 and the story in those games was bad easily worst in the series
bad hire for Santa Monica
@Triumph741 when say it was low I meant because the competition for game story wasn't particularly strong, not because of the tech at the time.
Whereas I'd say now, stories like God of Wars rival those of some movies and TV shows.
I only played the first 3, which were fine games but had dreadful writing. She may be a fantastic writer but considering the recent God of War games have had vastly better stories, writing and world building than Gears of War (at least the first 3 which players regularly claim were the better ones) this is a little concerning.
@ChrisDeku Got to agree here. Gears 4&5 weren't the best story wise. Still I have to assume Santa Monica know what they are doing and wish her well.
God/Gears of War
@LordAinsley It rivals them just because it's relying on cutscenes as much as some movies and tv shows.
@GamingFan4Lyf Cause no one what to play baby JD in 4; and the Gears 5 switch to a female character in a franchise played by dude bros... Plus, they destroyed JD (maybe killed him off).
Oh, and the multiplayer is straight dog crap.
@AverageGamer I don't play the multiplayer, so I have no basis for comparison.
But if the fact guys are playing a woman in Gears 5 caused such issue I don't think that's the problem of the game itself....
As far as the Gears 5 "shocker", it depends on player choice and will be interesting to see how that all plays out for Gears 6.
Interesting. Won't change the open map both games have or any gameplay stuff but for writing sure. Never hated the old/later Gears games stories at all they did the job.
Cinematic or not eh couldn't care less still till the gameplay changes.
i hope Corey shows off his game soon.
Kool looking forward to a new ip
Looking forward to Cory's game and at least one Loki game.
@AK4tywill You mean the writing which has kratos getting clowned from all angles? A once no nonsense taking character turned into a crusty old guy despite being immortal who's kid disobeys and disrespects him and who gets beat up by a woman despite having previously killed the likes of Hades and Poseidon.
Sounds like great writing if your name is Neil Druckmann, new god of war games are written for those who like marvel movies whereas the gears of war trilogy is written for those who like terminator, Alien, predator
@GamingFan4Lyf People just want to play Marcus. It would be like the God of War reboot having you play Atreus then having you play Atreus‘s girlfriend in the sequel. Using kratos for nothing but fanfare… Luckily they didn’t commit the cardinal sin of killing Marcus… We would’ve had another last of us situation on our hands
@GamingFan4Lyf i hate when people use the lore over identity reason. gears is meant to be dark and gritty no matter what , if they want to change the tone they should’ve just made a new IP.
@nomither6 I would argue that the overall story tone is still pretty much on par with with the original trilogy. Only the color palette changed from that typical gray and brown pattern of the time.
That being said, I do think the Hivebusters DLC hit all the right notes and blended old and new very well compared to base Gears 4 and 5.
