The work Belgian developer Larian Studios has put into getting the Xbox Series S version of Baldur's Gate 3 up to snuff will result in performance improvements for all the platforms the RPG is available on, including PS5. The upgrades will arrive as part of the game's fifth major patch, which is expected to go live this week — more details will be shared later today along with confirmation of new features.
Word of PS5 performance enhancements comes from director of publishing Michael Douse, who teases they might be the "least exciting thing" about the title's next update, so it sounds like the patch will be a very significant one. According to Douse, there's chatter around Larian Studios of employees proud they were able to "finally" implement certain tweaks, fixes, and changes. We'll bring you all the Baldur's Gate 3 update details once they're shared later today.
Those who have managed to reach the RPG's third act have reported technical issues during the narrative's conclusion — during co-op especially — so it's hoped these problems will be ironed out with today's update. Alongside welcome fixes from optimisation done in the Xbox Series S version, it's expected new features like a permadeath mode will be added to the game. What else do you want to see patched into the game? Let us know in the comments below.

This patch cannot arrive soon enough, I've been having withdrawal from the game since having to put it on hold. I do hope that the fix actually works, I just want to go see if all the Teiflings are still kicking for that trophy!
If I do get that trophy then my next playthrough will be as an S tier **** Dark Urge!
The irony of all of this is Xbox finally served for something other than being the buttend of a joke.
Never been excited for news about a patch before….I'm obsessed with this game.
Yeah I need this patch to be able to play again, I had to stop my run at Act 3 last weekend
What about cross play though???
I restarted this game after ballsing up at thr start and learning a bit through the next 5 hours or so but so far ive got off the ship at the beginning and am currently on the beach yet to pick it up again. I mean to every weekend when im off but just never do.
It's party time 🥳
Is the performance bad right now? Or is this just fine tuning? I’m holding off til the announced physical comes out.
I’m still on Act 1though 50 hours in and I’ve not experienced much hassle the worst being members of my party often refusing to jump until I take control whereupon the rest of the team jump back! Yeah, I know you can separate members but it’s not a major issue and damn, is this game utterly amazing. Only recently gave in and bought it then put off playing because it was a little too much to take in but now I’ve clicked with it and it’s without a doubt the best RPG I’ve played since The Witcher 3 and a game that continues to astound me with its depth, exploration, choices and sheer scope. Definitely going to reach 100 hours, very likely 150 and quite probably 200 plus I’m so eager to play it all again, try different things and maybe not focus so much on using dyes to change the colour of my teams underwear!
But I digress, with this and Alan Wake 2 I can session say my faith in gaming has been restored so here’s to more of the same.
@milonorth Its definetly playable. Act 1 is flawless, there are some texture popins in the main camp of Act 2.
Act 3 is where the problems are, big popin and fps drops. Act 3 is basiclaly a huuuge city that is cpu heavy, consoles arent very happy with it.
I want them to patch back in the ending to the game, no seriously, whatever it was supposed to be got cut and something very brief and shallow got added back in instead.
Paused for a bit, after completing Act 1, to play the Star Ocean remake. I pretty much knew it wouldn't take long to beat Second Story, one more story to go and I will be jumping back into BG3, next week! Now I'm very happy that I did!
The engineers had some kind of a breakthrough when optimizing for Series S and they were able to achieve ~500MB drop in peak system RAM usage and ~1.2GB drop in peak VRAM usage.
@GamingFan4Lyf I feel like the Series S optimizations might end up helping with how the game runs on lower-end and handheld PCs.
Just release it on physical !
@Ralizah Oh I am sure Steam Deck users will benefit from it!
Perhaps a Switch 2 version can be in the works (Nintendo has got to release that in 2024, right? RIGHT?!)
@GamingFan4Lyf Something is 100% coming out next year from them hardware-wise. It fits with their release pattern, and, frankly, the game lineup screams "transition year."
@Ralizah I finally fired up Super Mario RPG and holy cow does it look amazing!
It's like all that pre-rendered CGI work from the SNES days has come full circle to the originally intended look only in real-time.
Plus, the colors really pop on a QLED.
Speaking of the theme of weaker hardware development helping higher powered: with all the stuff Nintendo engineers have accomplished with the Switch, more cores and RAM are probably going to blow their ever-loving minds! They have learned to engineer amazing games under such high hardware limitations that even if the hardware on paper is closer to a PS4, the games won't look it all.

@GamingFan4Lyf Super Mario RPG is a good showcase of how a game doesn't need to be technically complex to look amazing.
I'm super excited to see what Monolith Soft does with more powerful hardware. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 legitimately does not seem like it should run as well as it does on Switch.
@Ralizah I think Monolith Soft prays to some kind of technology deity. Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U had no business looking the way it did on that hardware!
This reminds me, I still have to get the Expansion for XC3.
Did you feel like the ending to XC3 left you hanging?! I was actually kind of mad at it. 🤣
At least XC2 had a happy ending (I'm sure Rex could say the same thing. 😏)
@GamingFan4Lyf I actually absolutely loved the way XC3 ended, personally, since it felt like the one time a mainline entry didn't fall back on having a more wish fulfillment ending (I'm sorry, but Pyra should have died; would have worked far better narratively AND thematically), but if you're looking for something more definitive that connects back to the larger mythology of the series, you're going to really dig Future Redeemed. The metaphysical Klaus stuff does nothing for me, so I wasn't a huge fan of the plot, but it's pretty much custom-built for people who wanted a more explicit story sequel to the first two games.
XCX is weird. The character models aren't great, but those environments are unbelievably gorgeous. Either way, yeah, it almost looked out of place on that system.
