Sony has today announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire UK-based company iSIZE, which specialises "in deep learning for video delivery. iSIZE builds AI-powered solutions to deliver bitrate savings and quality improvements for the media and entertainment industry," the firm explained. The cost of the buyout isn't revealed due to contractual commitments.
The acquisition is designed to provide Sony with "significant expertise in applying machine learning to video processing, which will benefit a range of our R&D efforts as well as our video and streaming services". PS Plus Premium currently provides the option to stream PS3 games, and recently members of the top tier gained the ability to stream PS5 games.
It seems this purchase will aid Sony's efforts in this field. An SIE blog post said: "Founded in 2016 and based in London, iSIZE has a team of talented engineers and technical experts who have developed a suite of software solutions to optimize video. For example, the company built an AI-based perceptual preprocessing solution that allows conventional, third-party encoders to produce higher quality video at a significantly lower bitrate."

I would suspect this acquisition is in mind to cloud streaming and the ability to stream games.
I don’t think it’s possible to make that press release not sound incredibly dry 😂
It's Microsoft's turn again
This is for movies and TV, not games? Most likely for some Sony (not Playstation) service like Netflix?
@Zeke68 sounds more like they’re trying to be an everything platform like Xbox used to be marketed under matrick. Not a flattering comparison, to do that you’d need to not be as paranoid as Sony is when it comes to opening up the ecosystem.
iSIZE matters.
Okay Sony acquired someone is time for Microsoft to respond with a new acquisition! is only fair that they should be allowed to hit back 😌
Breaking news: Sony buys a video streaming company. Microsoft responds by buying 87 publishers, denies trying to "buy the whole industry".
In response, Microsoft buys France.
(Am I cool yet!?!?!)
@AverageGamer in response microsoft releases a new game...
@Northern_munkey and it gets a 7 so the fanbase flip out.
MS has got to be really feeling the pressure of this acquisition. I'm not sure it'll get through the regulators. 🙄
@Zeke68 Indeed. The announcement specifically calls out video, so I don't know where the game streaming stuff is coming from. This is likely to improve on the already impressive technology behind Sony Pictures Core, perhaps for licensing out to other entities or for stepping up Sony's multimedia ambitions.
@MrMagic 🤣
to fight back ms will buy nintendo
As we are having fun.
How about Microsoft hit back and buys Bungie of Sony 😂
What a waste of money. The could have bought a studio and have great exclusives, or put that money in the studios they own and expand those.
@TheCollector316 The press release literally says the acquisition will aid Sony's "video and streaming services".
@Martijn87 I agree! It’s a total waste of money! Because from this short article I know the breadth of the acquisition and all the reasons behind it. And I know if Sony isn’t making a purchase to benefit me as a PlayStation owner then the company is wasting my time and its own.
No Sony you don’t need this
Now all Sony needs is its own car manufacturer and MS will be trembling in their shoes.
Horrible.that money should have gone to acquiring ember lab.about level 5.or vanillaware.etc come on sony.word up son
@LiamCroft
What a difference "and" makes. Egg on my face.
@Northern_munkey wouldn’t that be the day. Forza motorsport has flopped already. Tragic
@Northern_munkey Technically they did release a new game today. The early access of MW3 campaign came out today 🤣
@Zeke68 or crunchroll service
@AhmadSumadi yes they could have put the money in their playstation division or in the film studios they own instead in a video streaming service expansion. Video streaming is a already to crowded space. And it's not like it's that much of a great business improvement that brings alot of money. Disney, hbo and Netflix are more losing money with it then earning.
"iSIZE builds AI-powered solutions to deliver bitrate savings and quality improvements for the media and entertainment industry..."
Reading about this is making me sleepy... goodnight folks!
Come on, they own Crunchyroll, the biggest anime streaming service. Sony doesn’t just operate PlayStation. Crunchy has 11 millions paid sub and much more are on free ad plan. Not bad for a niche streaming and the popularity of anime is on the rise too.
“ Sony isn’t making a purchase to benefit me as a PlayStation owner then the company is wasting my time”
-And what’s wrong with having the mindset of a consumer ?
Game over for Microsoft
@mrbone Crunchy roll operates under a completely different umbrella of Sony. This is SIE purchase and they tend to only handles everything related to PlayStation and gaming. I guess it could be a benefit to PlayStation productions.
@TheCollector316 Cloud gaming is essentially a video stream. This company specializes in optimizing video streams for high quality at low bitrates. There’s no reason their expertise can’t be applied to streaming games.
@Martijn87 Cloud gaming is literally a video stream.
@AverageGamer Ah I see. But I mean they could use the same technology. Don't see why they would only limit tech to some products.
@mrbone Ofcourse Sony won't use this for improving their other services....
This is a strategic acquisition and not necessarely related to the games industry.
Removed - disrespecting others
Seems like a solid move to me.
I've read a few articles in the last day about how PS5 streaming is well received, so why not double down and push it further?
Looking at their account on company house, I'm guessing the company went for somewhere below 20 million pounds.
Wait wasn’t the UK mad about the potential cloud gaming potential MS would have and they let this slide?
I'm assuming laying off 10% of the Bungie people paid for it.
They're actually pissing me off at this point
@Shepherd_Tallon As an American why should I be happy about the push towards streaming games? Aside from California, NYC, and maybe Washington State, our infrastructure is absolute doodoo in all-but the wealthiest neighborhoods even in huge metropolises such as Phoenix, Chicago, Dallas, etc. So 90% of us don't have enough speed or stability to stream games without them buffering every few seconds...
@Zeke68 @TheCollector316 Game Streaming IS video. We send inputs down the internet, those are controlled on the server and they send back a video stream effectively all in real time. It's a simplification but that is what game steaming is.
Without knowing more about the iSize AI technology it's impossible to know if this tech is applicable to game streaming as well.
@LilyGoMEOW I don't have the infrastructure to stream games either, but I'm also not being forced to stream my games so I'm okay about the service existing or if they invest in improving it.
If done right, it can be a very convenient supplementary service.
tbh I used to worry about the rush to digital because I love physical media, but I have no fears that streaming will ever be the only way I can play games in my lifetime.
Edit: I'll edit the snark out of my original comment though.
