Swapping disc drives with the new PS5 is easy, and while you will need an Internet connection in order to verify the hardware, youβll easily be able to swap between different devices. This is demonstrated in the video embedded above, as YouTuber TronicsFix registers a single disc drive with various consoles, and then swaps it backward and forwards with minimal fuss.
As he points out in the video, a firmware update could render this tactic futile in the future, so this isnβt a guarantee the disc drives will be so easily interchangeable in the future. But this is great news for potential resellers or those simply looking to replace potentially defective units, and itβs a refreshing example of flexibility from the format holder.

Surely this should have come as no surprise to anyone. Made me laugh to see some of the comments in earlier article about this.
I cant believe you didn't put Mystic for the source. He is one of the best and most underrated youtubers and he posted a similar video yesterday before this one. Plus he also answered many questions about the slim model.
good news because you couldn't swap disc drives out on ps3 ps4 or ps5 because the disc drives each had logic boards that were individually paired with that consoles motherboard
@iDreamwalker you are correct Mystic did indeed show this first
I like Mystic and TronicsFix both good youtube channels
Good news since disc drives typically wind up being one of the first things to go when consoles age. Being able to just buy a replacement to swap it out can save some cash that would otherwise be spent in repairs.
@trev666 whatcha talkin bout brother.
He has two slims. It's literally the first frame of the video.
Check out again.

@iDreamwalker But TronicsFix went more in depth in swapping drives around. In theory one drive cane serve multiple consoles if registered correctly.
I would really really like to think this intentional by Sony and they've decided this is a good move to support right to repair and console longevity, and we all know this is something M$ couldn't fathom doing with their console.
But I'll hold my applause because the cynic in me still thinks that at some point these drives will become married to a single APU and swapping will no longer be possible.
Because Sony.
@LiamOliver Sony didnt do this for right to repair they did it because its cheaper to make one model of ps5 than it is to make two.
sony can then pocket those savings
Can you take the drive from a shop brought PS5 disc version an put it in a disc less ps5.
Can you buy the separate disk drive and put it in a PS5 disc version?
If this the case it revolution in repair of PS5 and consoles and Sony should earn a few brownies points.
@LiamOliver if Sony were really concerned with longevity they wouldn't require an Internet connection to make it work.
@trev666 Well, yeah. That was obvious as soon as someone mentioned 'detachable disc drive' or to anyone who had seen a teardown of the original disc and disc-less versions. It would also have been cheaper to not pair PS4 drives to the console, but they were hoping to get more money by sanctioned repairs or people replacing entire devices.
The fact that they are proven to be swappable between multiple registered devices and (allegedly) available as a standalone hardware purchase, or you being able to re-register the drive to a new 'disc-less' console if your main console goes kaput is much more reduce/reuse than we are used to in the current era of technology. Sony should try and take advantage of this angle as it's something that will resonate well with a lot of people whose finances are incredibly stretched in these times, and the greenies, whilst also being a stick in the eye to the likes of Microsoft and Apple.
@AndroidBango My understanding is it's to do with core BD security than Sony deciding that is the way. Theoretically games on BluRay should be exempt from these protocols, but I'd imagine that for simplicity it's easier to bundle them all under the same ruleset.
@knowles2 This is what Sony want, people will pay slightly more for the disc-less slim, then 'upgrade' with a disc drive. And for manufacturing reasons all disc drives will be the same.
TronicsFix registered one drive to both consoles and switched and swapped them about. In some cases a factory reset was required of the PS5, but ultimately the drive would work seamlessly with either device once registered.
@trev666 I did swap faulty disc drive on my PS3 with a new one. All I had to do is keep the mother (or daughter as it is called) board of the old drive and put it on the new one so it is recognized by the console.
Flexible no it's just the right thing.
Linus tech tips channel showed that the disc drive has more capability then the standard ps5. Where as the ps5 disc drive didn't have the hardware for audio cd format then new disc drive does and more. They wondering why Sony included the added capabilities if they wont use them for anything. Or maybe they will. Thats why i like them. The cut to the chase and tear it down and see if it can run a ps1 format. And it looks to have the hardware on the disc drive to do so. Maybe a future update can enable it
The only thing appealing to me about the new PS5 is the ability to replace the disc drive. But, saying that, I have a Sega Saturn that still works perfectly after nearly 30 years so I'm not sure I'll actually care if my PS5 is functioning when I'm in my 70s.
A very niche use case but something I may actually run into so this is good news!
@ATaco I mean that's one of the advantages of this "slim" to begin with. This article however is talking about detaching the drive on one console and attaching to another with no problems.
@ATaco Which is why it's crazy that there are still "gamers" who wants an archaic format when a better alternative (digital) exists. All of their arguments fall apart too when they start crying, super easy to disable a physical supporter's argument.
It's 2023 and Sony are making portable blue ray players.... get a grip, Sony!
@__jamiie
And youβre lucky man. Knock on wood.
The Saturn had one of the worst laser assemblies ever used in a disc based console. They break commonly.
The rest of the Saturn is a reliable beast but the disc drive is usually a time bomb. It also doesnβt help that many Saturn discs were poorly mastered compared to the PS1. So they do have a habit of disc rotting prematurely.
It could be worse though. At least the Saturnβs laser assembly is a fairly standard model and easy to source. Itβs also easy to replace. Not as brain dead simple as a PS1 but itβs not much more complicated.
Whereas every Sega CDX owner lives in fear that their laser assembly takes a dump one day. Because that is a JOB on the CDX. Lots of stuff easily break as you take them completely apart. And the laser assembly wasnβt industry standard. Usually end up having to source a CDX parts machine.
Yeah Sony will be βfixingβ this in the next firmware update for sure
Since it's detachable, I would have assumed it can work on any PS5 slim. They can't just lock it on to one console. If they do decide to lock it to one console, then that would be kinda shxtty.
ππ€£ππ€¦ I can stick a picture of it on the console,it's just as much a picture of a dvd rom than an actual working dvd romππ€£π€¦ seriously do not buy this.
Question time..if I buy a disc PS5 slim annnd don't wanna use the disc drive can I take it off and use the PS5 without i
@0niguy You can, but there wouldn't be much point as the console cover will still have the slot in it.
@MrHabushi ok so you can't add the digital plates to them?
Remember you heard it here first. I smell modded firmware coming.
