Back in September, Square Enix confirmed that two paid DLC expansions for Final Fantasy 16 were in development — but we're still waiting on any concrete details. However, producer Naoki Yoshida did state that more information would be heading our way before the end of the year — and we're obviously now in December.
So is a reveal imminent? That's what fans are wondering after adult Clive's Japanese voice actor, Yuya Uchida, made an intriguing post on Twitter, only adding to the assumption that news is still incoming before 2023 is over.
Uchida is currently playing through the action RPG himself, and basically says that he needs to get on with it because he's heard rumours that there's some kind of announcement coming in December. Now, this wouldn't be the first time that a voice actor has hinted at an upcoming reveal — and it certainly won't be the last — but even written in Japanese, it seems like a pretty specific thing to post about.
Could the DLC show up at The Game Awards next week? Right now, it certainly seems probable, but again, only if Square Enix's plans are still on track. Fortunately, we won't have to wait too long to find out if there's any weight behind all this speculation.
As for the expansions themselves, director Hiroshi Takai has hinted at what's involved. When asked about the DLC at the recent PlayStation Partner Awards (via Game Watch), he said the expansions will "allow you to experience the 'darkness' and 'mystery' of Clive's story". He also confirms there'll be powerful enemies and new combat elements. That's all we're getting for now, though!
What do you want from Final Fantasy 16's DLC expansions? More Cid? Give us your best impression of the grizzled Dominant in the comments section below.

My kid finished the game soon after launch then we traded it in for Mario Wonder. Unlike the mess that was FFXV 16 seemed complete so think I'll just ignore this. 🤷
Yes, more FFXVI please!
I would like to see other playable characters outside of just Clive. Don't get me wrong I love Clive but I'd like to see maybe Jill or Dion or dare I say Torgal playable just to shake it up a bit.
As for story obviously exploring what happened to the Leviathan eikon is I think a lock. I'd also like to see more about Torgals origins which would give us a reason to explore the Northern regions.
Can't wait to see what they got up their sleeves!
Excited for it, FFXVI was one of my favorite things this year.
I would love if they did a Cid origin story. He was my favorite character in the game and my favorite Cid in the whole franchise.
@rjejr in what way was FF16 not complete? It’s one of the most complete games this year, and really in general. The game would have been fine never getting an update after it launched.
@Jaz007 think he said 15 was incomplete. Just used poor grammar. No offence @rjejr
I hope it’s a post game expansion or like a separate thing like FFXV’s were. Day 1 if it’s either of those. If I have to replay, that’s a trickier thing because there’s this thing called time which I’d have to figure out for a replay.
All i want is the intermission that was skipped to be included + leviathan.
I got the platinum and I'll be really happy to go back to FFXVI. It's definitely my game of the year.
The two most obvious additions these two DLCs could be are:
1. Clive's life in the years after the Phoenix gate incident. (I really hope it's this!)
2. A prequel story about Archduke Elwin and the war with the Northern Territories.
i dont understand how you guys liked it. i mean, i played every final fantasy, i even found things i liked in final 15.
But 16 ? What a total borefest.
That is not what a final fantasy should be. im sorry.
Hopefully they add more rpg elements otherwise I’ll give this a miss, just adding another summon is not enough really for me.
As more Clive isn’t an interest for me, I’d be way more interested in Jill, Cid or Benedikta back story.
Buuuuut I’m not their target audience anymore so… meh whatever make them money I guess 😂😂😂
@Papa_Godzilla
It’s a roller coaster action game (very set piece focused) there is definitely an audience for that stuff (plus the story is decent, and the voice acting and some tracks are excellent with high production values)
But yeah if final fantasy to you is a party of interesting characters, rpg mechanics, nice side quests and a world to explore with mini games…then nope this may not be quite the right fit for you as things will feel missing(as it was for me).
As its focus was clearly story and the action combat system.
But I can see why it is liked.
Maybe this go around there will be actual dungeons that aren’t just a straight line.
@Nalodart well. yeah, i gotta give it credits for the music. it was pretty decent.
But i cant agree with the story. it felt like a checklist of things patched together. Things i saw many times in many other stories.
I'm going to assume this game is safe to play now? people were saying it caused PS5s to get rather warm and I've been holding off until that gets fixed unless its been fixed already ofc.
Pass, I'd take a prequel with new characters going back to the first extinction event to help expand on the history Ultima loosely described that might have lead to the demise of Leviathan. I'm not interested in lazy bolted on content that took a year to put out that takes 5 hours to complete and is a lesser experience than the core game.
This just seems like a waste of resources.
@Papa_Godzilla
Woah woah I just said it was decent…it’s not great, excellent or ground breaking in anyway imo so I agree with you.
It was 1 part predictable, and 1 part half baked and rushed (in particular ultima)
But to give credit to voice acting again the voice cast did great with what they had to work with 😂
@RubyCarbuncle I played the game every day for 3-4 hours, for a week, and my PS5 never overheated. Either a select few were very unlucky or it was fake comments aimed at bringing the game down.
The game is down to £35 (UK) which is a great price to get it.
@RubyCarbuncle
I never had that issue myself so may be a limited few, but that would have been patch by now as there has been many updates I wouldn’t worry.
If that’s the only thing stopping you, go play! have fun with it!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game, the Combat, Story, Visuals, Voice Acting and Music were excellent. I understand that some people were annoyed about the style and linear maps, and the game not being a "Final Fantasy" but that doesn't mean it's not a great game.
@Nalodart hahahaha sorry i re-read myself and it felt cold. not my intention.
And yeah, i guess the voice acting was good. it didnt sound cringe or overacted like many other games.
@Korgon I am worried that the expansion wont be that significant because it was announced pretty shortly after its release. Hopefully it expands the basic attacks by a decent amount because as much as I liked the gameplay eikon abilities are used more than the sword attacks themselves.
@UltimateOtaku91 @UltimateOtaku91 Ahh good to hear as I've been eager to play this. Thanks for letting me know 👍
@Nepp67
Yeah I agree the eikon abilities got a little out of hand especially towards the end when you got access to all of them. That's actually another reason why I'd like to see new playable characters since they would have get a bit more creative with their move set since they couldn't fall back on the eikon powers to do all the heavy lifting.
@Korgon Yeah that is a fair point, but it seems like they are just going to stick with Clive, while unfortunate Im not too upset about it. Hopefully with the devs talking about nee gameplay elements they dont just mean new eikons(Especially when the only Eikon we know of is just the Leviathan).
Torgal dlc is a lock right?
Seriously, i would like to know more about what the medicine girl's deal was and if she is actually leviathan. It will also be interesting to see who we play as - could it be Jill, or even Gav? Both seem possible candidates
@Rob_230 Gav is a massive stretch. It just seems the most likely for us to be able to play as Barnabas because of both the gameplay and the gameplay director being the DMC gameplay director
@Artois2 @Jaz007 I'm not sure what part of my grammar was poor, though I don't doubt it was, but I did think while writing it their may be some confusion w/ 15 and 16 right next to each other hence the Roman Numerals for one title and not the other. Guess that didn't help enough. 😝
15 did not seem complete. You needed to watch both a full length movie and 1 hour of webisodes to get all of the pre-story, plus several dlc after to fill out the 2nd half of the game.
16 seemed complete. Beginning, middle and end, it was all there in the game and on the disc.
Hope that clears things up. 🤷♂️
I'm a huge ff fan and hated this entry unfortunately. First of all it's not a final fantasy game in any way, I know people will say it's evolving or whatever but fans of early entries were fans because they liked those kinds of games and it feels like square just dumped us in order to have broader appeal. Also if this wasn't a ff game and just a normal action game I honestly don't understand how people enjoy it. The combat is sooo basic it was tedious and I avoided whenever possible, same said about the side quests except I forced myself to do all of them. The set pieces were awesome but everything else was just so so boring and a chore. If they want it to be an action game make it 15-20 hours don't make it the length of an rpg because it doesn't have the depth to be engaging for that long. A shorter game just focused on the set pieces would have been much better
Biggest disappointment for me this year, and I played Starfield.
I am no FF fan by any means as turn base RPG’s do nothing for me. But i have always respected and admired the work and story and characters of the FF franchise. When i seen 16 was action based and turned based i was interested but still not sure. Well i took the plunge on the PS5 digital Black Friday sale and got FF16, wow is it a great looking game and really fun. I am enjoying it way more than I thought, my only knock is PS5 not being powerful enough for true 4K/60. But if the PS5 Pro is real and launches i will get one for sure and play FF16 at its top performance in a heart beat. Looking forward to seeing what they have next in DLC.
Honestly, having beaten the game, all the missed opportunities for side content that wasn’t there, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Too little, too late.
@Papa_Godzilla Its an unpopular opinion and one I agree with. Dont get all the love tbh. Played and finished all the FF games prior and for a game carrying the FF name XVI was super toned down, and even for an action game it was just ok.
I'm ready for just about anything and more cid is great as well that man's voice is the most soothing thing ever makes me melt in my seat 🫠😉
I don't mind a DLC focused on Clive's interim years between the Phoenix Gate attack and the time he encounters Cid, but I hope we find out what happens to Joshua and Clive after that ending. They would need a new big baddie for that though. Sadly, Dion is very clearly gone.
If both DLCs are about stuff that happens before or during the story of the game, then I'm out. What is past, is gone. I don't need to live through it.
@Benjiro Eeh having a a dlc would just go against the ending the game was trying to set up and especially after the last set of side quests
@Korgon Agreed with all you said! I worry that they'll focus too much on Clive, whereas I think we already got quite a complete picture with the base game.
Would love to see more about Leviathan, Torgal and have maybe a different playable character (maybe even the Leviathan dominant) in one of the expansions.
