The Last of Us Part II Remastered is out today, 19th January, and it looks like plenty of PS5 players want to get hurt all over again and relive Naughty Dog's tragic masterpiece. But apparently, enough veterans are getting confused by the whole $10 upgrade path thing that Sony, as a gesture of goodwill, is issuing refunds to those who got too caught up and purchased the game again at full price.
As reported by MrPyo1 on Twitter, Sony is pre-emptively refunding players who purchased the full-price version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered and own the PS4 version of The Last of Us: Part II on the same PSN profile. This is probably just Sony trying to pre-empt the inevitable headache it must deal with whenever an upgrade situation arises rather than an overtly benevolent act. The company's customer support would likely be inundated with refund requests anyway, so perhaps automating the entire ordeal is less hassle.
