Dead Cells is the excellent side-scrolling roguelike action game from Motion Twin. We loved it back when the vanilla version launched years ago, but it's since received many huge updates, adding a vast amount of extras to keep the experience fresh. Now, though, the studio has announced that the next update to the game will be the last.
Evil Empire has been leading the post-launch development for Dead Cells for the last five years, helping Motion Twin keep the title going while it began work on its next game. With the release of Update 35(!), Evil Empire will be moving on, and Motion Twin is already hard at work on Windblown, its co-op roguelike game announced last year.
"Update 35 for Dead Cells marks the end of our creative journey on the game," Motion Twin says in an update to fans. "After an incredible 5-year collaboration in bringing additional content to Dead Cells' live-ops, Evil Empire will be pursuing new adventures and we can't wait to see what they come up next. This comes after much reflection, especially following the awesome success of the "Return to Castlevania" DLC last year."
The studio goes on to say it wants to not "overextend and risk diminishing" what makes Dead Cells what it is, which seems fair enough to us. After half a decade, we think moving onto other projects is more than reasonable.

Honestly props to the devs for adding so much additional content to this game.
Almost makes me want to get a job at IGN, and copy someone else's review of this particular game. What could possibly go wrong?
Loved Dead Cells, and it played so well on the Switch. Amazing the support they’ve shown this title over the years.
Was the first roguelike I ever played, and still probably my favourite. I’ve struggled with other roguelike’s over the years, but still occasionally dip back into this every now and then.
Its been one hell of a ride and its easily in my top 10 games.
I absolutely adore Dead Cells. I’ve put well over 200 hours into it across PS4, PS5 and Switch, and it’s hands down my favourite indie game of all time.
In fact, on the original PS4 version, I was just three trophies shy of achieving the platinum. If only trophies transferred over to the recent PS5 version. Doesn’t matter though, I’ve been more than happy to start all over again. Dead Cells is indeed an all-timer.
@HotGoomba Haha! I wonder what ever happened to Filip Miucin after he sabotaged his own IGN career?
It nearly dethroned Spelunky as my favourite indie game, nearly!
Shout out to anyone on here who managed to achieve a full 100% trophy completion. There was a few dlc trophies that stopped me involving going through a final stage without dying.
I have all the DLC for Dead Cells and it also released on the PS5. So at some point soon I'll be 100% Dead Cells on both PS4 & PS5.
@DennisReynolds Same. What a game, and what an incredible support from the team!
The only very slight disappointment was the native PS5 version without 4K/120fps but heck, who cares, the game is simply fantastic!
What an amazing ride. Thank you MT and EE devs!
It’s the end of an enjoyable era, I miss it. Amazing game.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Motion Twin! You crafted a classic.
@Terra_Custodes and what exactly is "western woke propaganda ridden"? Are you a fan of Celeste by the way as you like indies? If so oh boy you're in for a shock.
@The_Pixel_King @HotGoomba SINCE YOU ASKED: he's busy necro-ing hilariously transparent self-AMAs. The farther down you scroll to the newest — and, most disturbingly, VERY recent — replies of his, it...well, I won't spoil it for you.
