In a new gameplay trailer, FromSoftware announced Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree will release for PS5, PS4 on 21st June 2024 for £34.99 / $39.99. Check it out above.
The story setup goes as follows: "Guided by Empyrean Miquella, players are beckoned to the Land of Shadow, a place obscured by the Erdtree where the goddess Marika first set foot. In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world as they meet others who follow in Miquella’s footsteps with ulterior motives."
FromSoftware has described Shadow of the Erdtree as its "largest expansion to date", adding in an entirely new map called the Land of Shadow. You'll be able to seamlessly travel back and forth between the original map and this new one, where you'll find "new weapons, equipment, weapon skills and magic" and "new enemies, boss encounters and plotlines to further increase players' RPG freedom".
As well as the base DLC, there's also a Premium Bundle that packs in a digital soundtrack and artbook. There'll also be digital bundles that package the base game with the expansion, and a physical collector's edition that includes a 46cm statue of Messmer the Impaler.

$40?! I hope this is an Iceborne sized expansion. Trailer looked good though.
Looking forward to it
Just sucks that it releases the very same day as SMT5:V. For some reason games I'm looking forward to keep releasing at the same time in 2024
Looks HUGE for an expansion, hopefully it justifies the price! I suspect it will as the base game is huge value for $.
I bought Elden Ring for $20 during black Friday sales. A bit strange to have a DLC that cost twice the price
Good grief this looks good!
Can't wait. That looks insane.
Looks incredible. I cannot believe this comes out on the same day as SMT:V!
@get2sammyb Maybe Sony should stop wasting time on State of Plays that just get review bombed anyway and hype up Nintendo Directs and other games trailers more. 🤷🏻♂️
I played my kid’s game on PS5 but they’ve since moved over to PC and bought it on Steam so I’m guessing that’s where the dlc will go so I’ll miss it. Probably for the best looks like a boss rush and it took me 300 hours to watch people beat those in my game. Still haven’t beaten the last 2, crazy sword boss lady and the flying whale, whatever the heck that thing was.
Looks amazing, day 1 buy.
Wow...this is going to be big! Typical From trolling, I thought it was a countdown to the reveal sigh. Anyway just look at THAT ART!
Day one buy. I would pay regular price for this or more. If it is $40 then it must be huge.
@rjejr what part of largest expansion to date, entirely new map and plot lines screams boss rush to you?
Yah that looked awesome. I hope it's a decent sized expansion two years later at 40 us. Also REALLY hope they didn't just mishmash together reskinned assets/models and move set animations to create the enemies in the expansion.
EDIT: apparently it's the size of just the Limgrave area https://www.ign.com/articles/hidetaka-miyazaki-elden-ring-shadow-of-the-erdtree-interview
Honestly can’t wait. Still debating wether to start a new character or not for this, but if past FromSoft DLC’s are anything to go by this will be way tougher than the base game, so maybe those souped-up boss weapons will come in handy!
But the big question is… which boss will rival Malenia?
Incredible...just...incredible. Day one.
Wish it was sooner but something to look forward to. Should be a massive expansion at that price and just from the trailer it already looks harddd
@rjejr wait why would sony hype up nintendo direct i'm confused
I'll wait patiently for it.
at least, now I know exactly what time I have for my backlog.
maybe I'll beat those Lords of the fallen after all..
"Erdtree" is a weird word. I don't like it.
RIP SMT V: Vengeance 😅😅😅
I'll be the lone voice of dissent and say that ER isn't nearly as good as Bloodborne. Wish this dev team's amazing talents could be pointed at a BB sequel instead.
Still my fav game of all time and my first ever platinum. Cannot wait for this
Open world dark souls vs turn based dark souls. I'll still try to get both day 1...
The new areas kinda looked samey but still gorgeous. I loved seeing all the new mobs and bosses though
Looks as good as expected.
June 21st.
A Friday.
Going to book it and the Monday off now.
Quite a hefty price, but I trust them it will be more than worth it. I’ll probably replay the base game once my PS Plus runs out beginning of July and incorporate the DLC in the same playthrough.
@VaultGuy415 You can't say "nearly as good", maybe it's the theme you like but when it comes to pure size...just minus the open world of ER and you could say just Stormveil is bigger than Central Yharnam and Cathedral Ward combined. Yeah Bloodborne has this unique charm, one isn't flat out better than the other, they're different, they're both timeless masterpieces at the end of the day.
Long weekend booked. I remember taking vacation during the Elden Ring release, coupling it with a Nordic spa day. Methinks I’ll do just that again
Elden Ring remains one of the best games I’ve ever played. Based on this incredible trailer, it looks to be getting even better. June can’t come soon enough!
I'm ready to be hurt again.
*****, I'm in the Lakes at a wedding that week. A week off away from my ps5 and a whole new land to explore. I don't need to go do I? I'm not the groom or best man. Would they actually miss me? I'm actually saving them money on food. Makes sense to stay home. No wife, no kids.
@TheArt I made the mistake of playing it on a new PC and I didn't go back to it after beating it that first month. The stuttering was atrocious. Beyond that, during that first month, the game had very broken ashes of war (hoarfrost stomp anyone?) and horrible balancing between classes. The mounted combat was really easy to abuse — I killed Fire Giant first try on the horse by poking his toes, but in co-op runs I experienced a <3% win rate because of all the cheap one-shot attacks.
It was a rushed, sloppy mess at release. They fixed a ton of stuff later on but that was too late for me. I rate BB as a 10, ER a 7.5. DeS (both versions), DS1, DS2 Scholar, and DS3 are all better games, too.
That's a lot to pay for DLC, but likely it's gonna be massive.
Yes I'll have this thank you very much.
£35??? I loved Else ring, but I bought the game for £55 and doubt this DLC Will be almost 2/3 the length of the original game. I'll wait for a price drop, that's way too much for an expansion.
@Shepherd_Tallon @Enriesto I am extremely curious about this : do you (and other people claiming to book days off fro a new release) really do it, or is it an hyperbolic way of saying you'll play it day one and as much as you can?
I'll skip this. I don't feel like having this game beat me into another year-long depression.
Like in game, I think I have died twenty times just by watching the trailer, bring it on 💀
@Enriesto @Shepherd_Tallon Hey there friends.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Can´t wait to go back to The lands between, or in this case, The Land of Shadow and just get wrecked by whatever those new and terrifying things are.
And eventualy defeat every last one of them them in a triumphant roar of accomplishment.
Cheers everyone and happy gaming
Looks Amazing!! My most anticipated game this year is now actually DLC. And a substantial one at that judging by the price tag. Also one of the VERY RARE instances where I will preorder something.
@Olmaz not hyperbole, have done in the past. This is how I decompress, and once in a while I make a little vacation out of it. Why not? Life’s short, enjoy it when you can
Edit: the Nordic spa mention is also not hyperbole, I actually did this last time and was an amazing mix to my time off. Try it! Throw in a good massage or something for your next gaming weekend.
@Olmaz Hi friend.
In my case, there are very few games that gets me that much excited to play not just day one, but day two, three and four if possible.
And Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Rise of The Ronin and Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree are some of them.
There is just not enough time to play so many awesome games.
Cheers and have a good one
Lmao £35 is crazy
Looks like its time i played the game, ive enjoyed and beaten all former From ARPGs, the open world for this initially turned me off on, but so did no blocking in Bloodborne, and that became my favourite.
With that said, From DLC has a habit of making the base game look like a walk in the park...ill make sure to bring my big boy pants.
@VaultGuy415 Bloodborne also shipped with terrible load times, frame drops and entire progression halting bugs. Comparing the two games at launch is crazy you just really want to hate on Elden Ring for some reason clearly
@RaZieLDaNtE @Olmaz 100% booking them off.
I make a point of taking at l east one two week block off each year. That's a rule. I'll try to time it for a big game release if possible, but otherwise I'll go on a small trip or something. (I have next week off and a hotel booked, and the following week off for FF VII, for example.)
But otherwise I save my time off for when I need it.
Dentist. Burning out after busy period. Things like that.
And occasionally I'll take a sneaky long weekend for another big game release like Elden Ring.
Expecting a shadow world of shadow dog enemies, shadow poison swamps, and shadow ladder climbing... should be good fun nonetheless.
Today just got better with the release date and trailer of elden ring shadow of the erdtree.elden ring is easily one of the best video games ever made.word up son
The screenshots embedded in the article look amazing. No matter where you look in Elden Ring, it's such a beautiful game.
@VaultGuy415 I will also be the lone voice of dissent and say that Bloodborne is the most disappointing soul-like game of From Software. It feels rushed and unimaginative. If the Art direction and fast-paced combat look wonderful at start, it gets old very fast and becomes predictable. Game is also far to easy but I can understand that some people prefer when it is abordable rather than brutally hermetic. That said, I don't understand how it can be compared to Elden Ring, there is like ... nothing in common?
no word yet on a physical "complete edition" of elden ring?
@Monstermash40 Yeah I would absolutely stay home, and you definitely won't regret it. Weddings are the worst.
I don’t always buy into hype, but when I do…
It’s Fromsoftware
Interesting to see the scalpers have the Collector's Edition up on ebay for twice the store price before it's even out of stock. 🙄
Loved Elden Ring, absolutely, love all the Soulsbornes, paid £45 for Elden Ring, day one, then sold it on for £40, a couple of months later after completing it and doing the mopping up.
£35 for DLC though, hmm, I'll get it again in a GOTY type thing aways down the line.
But I am quite sure that Shadow will be top notch, the Old Hunters DLC was quite possibly the best of the PS4 era.
The 250$ collectors edition is just absolute insanity frankly
@rjejr what is blud yapping about
It does look pretty decent in fairness, and FromSoft's reputation for producing killer DLC is pretty solid.
Not to sound ungrateful, but I'm still hoping for a Sekiro 2. Given the choice, I would have rather passed up AC6 and ER-DLC for From to have dedicated their dev teams for a Sekiro sequel!
Sekiro was my first From game, and got me back into gaming during the pandemic... won't ever forget the thrill of beating Lady Butterfly
Great stuff, but salty price.
I can wait for a sale with FFVII Rebirth, Dragon's Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin and the newly announced SMT V releasing in next months.
@JPEGMakima " what part of largest expansion to date, entirely new map and plot lines screams boss rush to you? "
The part where the 3 minute trailer was 2 1/2 minutes of boss fights?🤷♂️
@Logonogo " wait why would sony hype up nintendo direct i'm confused "
B/c this was the front page of Pushsquare this morning right after the Nintendo Direct that announced all 4 of these games. 🤷♂️
I'd like to add that is an unfiltered front page screenshot, I didn't filter for "PS4 games coming out on Switch".
Before that where articles about SMT 5 and Super Monkey Ball (which is funny b/c it;s nto even on PSS4/5) and after those 4 in the pic there were articles about Monster Hunter Stories and Epic Mickey being ported to Switch.
That's a total of about 5 or 6 games announced today coming to PS4/5. So that's why.
@rjejr yeah showing off the boss fights in a series that's famous for it's iconic boss fights it's indicative of the entire dlc! that makes perfect sense!
@JPEGMakima It does though, doesn't it.😂
@NathanKang What's a blud? 🤷♂️
@rjejr gotcha thanks for the explanation
@tabris95 At least that's a different style of game. Enotria: the last song (a souls like) releases that day too, I feel for those Devs!
I think $40 is a decent price. Activision had a survey asking players if they wanted to pay $100 for diablo 4 dlc. Lmao i quit the game that day lol
$40 is too much to spend on a DLC... In every other case except this one. Bring it on.
@nessisonett £35/$40 is a tough pill to swallow, but I suspect the size of the expansion will justify the price tag.
@wildcat_kickz No chance. That’s the price of a full game. The price hike is ridiculous given how massive profits have become.
@nessisonett I kinda think that's a false equivalency. $40 is the price of some full games, but that's pretty rare now, Helldivers 2 being an example.
Sure, Elden Ring launched at $60, but if it came out today, I'd wager it would be $70, easy. I suspect to play through all the expansion's content, it will take 30-40 hours for a fresh run, which is much longer than many $70 games. While how long it takes to play through content shouldn't be the end-all be-all of value, From Software has more than proven themselves as being capable of delivering a high-quality product.
I haven't seen From Software's/Bandai Namco's financials, so I can't comment on the profits, but I can say with certainty that those entities aren't non-profits. It would be unreasonable for them to sell the expansion without making a buck. The thing will have taken like 2.5 years to come out, so no doubt it was expensive to produce.
Game of the Year 2024 is here.
