During the recent Capcom Highlights showcase, one particular quote from Dragon's Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno caught everyone's attention. He stated: "Over 1,000 characters inhabit the world [of Dragon's Dogma 2], each with their own unique stories and motivations." That's a lot of NPCs.
And apparently, you can forge relationships with them, which will in turn give you access to quests, and directly impact the game's dynamic open world. "The [game's] world is a complex web of human relationships, and the player's choices have consequences," Itsuno continues. Honestly, it's all sounding rather ambitious.
But here's the kicker: NPCs can die. As in, if you lure a griffon back to town and your best mates are hanging around, they'll try to help you fight it — and if they're killed, they're dead and gone. "If there’s an NPC you care for in a town, you will need to protect them as you fight, or hold them and run," Itsuno told Automaton. He goes on to explain that the development team wanted death to have meaning, as it makes the game's world feel more alive.
You will, however, have a brief window to revive an NPC if you're in possession of a wakestone — a revival item that also existed in the original Dragons Dogma.
Everything we've heard about Dragon's Dogma 2 suggests that it's going to be shooting for that Bethesda-style, dynamic open world crown, where numerous systems come together to create a world that feels reactive. Hopefully Capcom manages to pull it off.
Are you excited for Dragon's Crown 2? Imagine the possibilities in the comments section below.

I'm not sure my conscience can take it. I still haven't got over accidentally clobbering one of the pyromancers in Dark Souls and then being forced to kill him because he wouldn't stop aggroing me😁
If he dies, he dies
It won't be long after launch until you see videos like: "Can I finish the game if I eliminate all NPC's?"
They'll have their work cut out for them...
While this all sounds like a very immersive experience, it all seems like "too much".
Maybe I'm just getting too old and impatient, but who wants to deal with all that stress to befriend NPCs?!
This is definitely not a game for me.
They want death to mean something? So does that mean that if your character dies they stay dead and you just make a new one to take their place or does your pawn takes over.
I truly doubt you can have relationships with all 1000 npc’s and all the videos I’ve seen of this game makes it look as mediocre as the first DD.
Capcom should do their own take on Rainbow Six Vegas terrorist hunt and have a counter on the screen, "NPC Hunt".
I miss RS Vegas, shame they never ported them.
@mariomaster96
Ivan Drago or Glass Cloud?
@Vriess Ivan Drago
@GamingFan4Lyf Well this pretty standard in western RPGs. In the Baldur's Gate trilogy, in Elder Scrolls, in Fallout, in Arcanum, it's been a while but I think in the Might and Magic, and Wizardry series. True, typically when they become more mainstream they tend to put in some invincible critical NPCs so you can't completely mess things up, but I'm sure DD2 will have protected critical NPCs too.
@ShogunRok I imagine a lot of people are hoping for Dragon's Crown 2 now that Vanillaware is done with Unicorn Overlord.
@TimeDelayedGamer I know exactly what you mean... First time I played Bloodborne (also my first Soulsborne game) I stumbled upon a character on a hidden balcony with it's back turned, so I sneaked up on it with a grin on my face to go for a visceral... Imagine my surprise when that attack only drained a flimsy portion of it's life... and I was eating dirt a few seconds after.
It wasn't until much later in the game i found out she was actually Eileen, and she was friendly unless attacked... and on top of that, her questline was actually the best one in the game.... bummer!🤦🏻
Oh, and if you hit her by mistake a few times during the fight with Henryk, you can aggro her, even if you are actually trying to help her out...
I wonder if that's something that can happen in Dragon's Dogma 2 with some of the NPC's...
@Areus No, it talks about NPCs which are "Non playable characters," Although it would be pretty neat if they added in a permadeath mode in the future.
That sounds like a lot of responsibility I don't think gamers can handle that 🤔 😂
Thats cool by me.and in Dragon dogma dark arisen the pawn will let get 2 higher level npcs.so its all good.word up son
@Melee_Ace I'll take it!
Definitely doing a genocide run of this game at some point, in that case.
@GeminiReign that’s fine you don’t agree but I feel it’s was mediocre bordering on bad. The story was a joke,the world was barren and horribly designed with no reason to explore,voice acting was mediocre to bad,characters were beyond forgettable,music was forgettable,enemy variety was anemic and the technical aspects were really mediocre. The only thing it had going for it was it’s combat and pawn system and that’s it.
This definitely sounds like everyone smart should wait to buy until after the public testers do their thing
Muuurrrrrdeeerrrrrrrr
Dragons dogma has under 60 frames per second but if they fix that, I buy!
„1000 unique NPCs to talk in DD2“ sounds as exciting to me as „1000 unique planets to discover in Starfield“.
@GeminiReign @GeminiReign so what specifically do you disagree about with my comment since I took the time to explain why it’s mediocre bordering bad. You don’t think the story was garbage and characters forgettable and do you think the world was actually designed well and gave reasons to explore?
@Max_the_German Ive heard BG3 has over 17000 endings
@GeminiReign the story was standard but wasn’t serviceable because it was badly written and forgettable,the world I don’t see how it was interesting to explore when there was nothing unique to find or any rewards for doing so plus the level design was mediocre. I said the combat was one of the only good things about it but it wears it welcome out because once again the enemy variety was anemic and that’s all there is to do in the game. At least you didn’t try to argue about the bad voice acting and forgettable music and characters so there’s that. I’ve played plenty of rpgs I’m playing rebirth right now and there’s plenty that’s way better than DD. To name a few there’s FF rebirth,HFW,Witcher 3,Elden Ring,GOT,Cyberpunk 2077 and going back a little further there’s Fallout 3/New Vegas and Skyrim. DD doesn’t come close to sniffing any of those games which offer almost the complete package some more than others compared to DD.
I will kill them all so that the game runs more smoothly. Maybe then I'll get 32fps
@Nepp67 I know what they were talking about but why stop at npc's have your own character be at risk as well then when you die have your pawn take over as the main character kinda like what did with first game where your pawn took over your body.
I'm dreaming of game, where NPCs are killable so I can anytime freely jump on final enemy and smash his face, before he tries something...
Sounds like a challenge.
Brilliant! Will do a run where I murder every NPC I don’t really vibe with XD
@Matroska Probably why I don't really like Western RPGs: too open-ended and expect you to "live" in the game as the main questline is generally quite short compared to everything else.
I don't mind long RPGs, but I'm more of a fan of the JRPG structure where the bulk of the content is the actual main quest.
Oh they going elder scrolls on us now...
It's cool more games are doing this I thought it was a fun idea in the souls games and it worked well in the Bethesda games
Oh that's pretty cool. If I kill them at the beginning and they're part of a story later on, what happens then?
