How big of a hit has Helldivers 2 been? Well, how about this: in the UK, across its first three weeks available, its sales are just 28 per cent lower than the immense juggernaut that is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 across its first three weeks on the market. Now, there are some caveats to clarify here: Arrowhead Studios’ hit co-op game is available on both PS5 and PC, with the former accounting for 57 per cent of the total sales. This is accurate across physical and digital, but obviously Insomniac Games’ superhero sequel launched exclusively on Sony’s home console.
Nevertheless, if you turned back time and told us Helldivers 2 would perform this well, we wouldn’t believe you. The craziest statistic is that sales are actually increasing week-on-week. This is uncommon, because most games tend to move the bulk of their numbers when they launch, and steadily decline thereafter. But the word of mouth is actually making the intergalactic affair more popular with each successive week it’s available. Presumably this’ll steadily begin to ease out now the initial wave of enthusiasm has passed.
PS5 continues to be the best-selling console in the UK, although its sales are down 28 per cent year-over-year. It’s worth remembering that this time last year Sony’s console was only just starting to become widely available, and so it was never going to match that pace in a quieter 2024. We should also mention that Hogwarts Legacy launched last February, and went on to become one of the best-selling games of the year. So unsurprisingly, we’re seeing some contraction 12 months later.
UK Sales Charts: February 2024 (Physical and Digital)
- Helldivers 2
- EA Sports FC 24
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Skull & Bones
- The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered
- Persona 3 Reload

Arrowhead is definitely getting or already brought by Sony at this point.
It's actually insane how well this game has done. There are posts by me on Slack where I expected it to be a bomba. Haha!
@Korra Relative to expectations it's a miracle, though!
The price definitely helps i wouldn't have taken a chance on it if it had been £70.
@Korra agreed… while 28% is a helluva lot closer than would be expected, it’s still under 3/4’s of the sales, on two separate systems… and wouldn’t be considered close imho.
Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing you can get.
That’s a shock to the system to see P3 being outsold by Suicide Squad and Skull and Bones.
I do think Helldivers did have the benefit of launching against essentially nothing though. Word of mouth was powerful, but many other games would have been crushed by those server issues if there was more competition for the player base that is into the game. Personally, it’s gonna be a bit for me til I get to play it much. The server issues got resolved right before FF7 and I discovered Balatro in that time too. I have very little free time, but I do want to get a return on my investment… after Rebirth, likely pending Dragon’s Dogma.
I genuinely hadn't played an online shooter of any sort in about 5 years but bought it on a whim and having an absolute blast. They just got the fundamentals right and it's a low price point, good word of mouth, decent marketing, which all adds up to a deserved success.
So it’s 28% lower including PC? Which is probably a couple of million in numbers terms.
And if you then compare ps5 v ps5 figures it would be hugely different.
Bit of sensationalism in this article. Regardless of how good HD2 is doing.
It’s likely that it could be tracking ahead of SM2 at worldwide sales level for 2 reasons. The UK was a comparatively slow market for Helldivers 2, it actually didn’t get to no.1 on steam UK sales until well into its second week.
Steam has a more consistent global reach compared to the PS5 which likely trounces Steam in NA and Europe but at worldwide level user numbers are similar to slightly higher on Steam. Steam concurrent user peak time actually corresponds to Asian evening time and the middle of the night for USA.
So you’ll likely find that Helldivers 2 tracks behind SM2 in NA and Europe but well ahead in the Rest of the World categories.
@Rangers420 Yes but it being a quality game probably didn't hurt it either.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Why its made at the fraction of the costs no massive advert campaigns I think it's quite impressive.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner That 28% is UK only in the first 3 weeks on sale, so no it isn't millions it's just a a few hundred thousand less.
I also think there is far less competition early this year with all the other online games being horrible (Spidey 2 is a single player game that went up against Mario, Alan Wake, BG3, AC in a similar launch period). The JRPGs which have dominated the release schedule this year so far despite recent growth are nowhere near mainstream yet so games like Yakuza, P3R are still minnows in the mainstream.
Everything aligned for Palworld and Helldivers 2 to make a splash.
Also, I think people are a little too focused on that “down 28%” part. 28% less than Spider-man 2 is a massive amount more than 99% of video games launched in the last 12 months.
@ChrisDeku Incorrect the peak is work hours for Asia because right now in HK where I live it 9pm and the player count is 144k on steam. when Asia is asleep and america is awake the player count shoots up.
It deserves the success due to just having good old fun core gameplay, and dropping in for a max 40 mins mission helps those with time restraints without fomo as well.
@breakneck I meant for Steam as a whole, the peak time is 14:00 UTC, which is in about 1 hour.
However, you’re right that Helldivers 2 does have an unusual peak, which correlates to very late USA time. In fact Gamalytic predicts that 42.9% of Steam sales were in USA alone. I’m not sure what to make of that, that’s kind of insane. I’ve never seen a big steam game that skewed to USA.
@ChrisDeku Yeah don't get me wrong HD2 has been in the top 10 in HK (i think 8 right now) as well but in the US the attach rate is absolutely nuts.
Game is truly amazing.
@NinjaNicky Plenty of people do when they buy digital day one.
@Jay767 apparently, contrary to the CEOs tweet of it not happening, its something that Sony have been planning for a while.
I think I'd rather see them remain independent and second party like Insomniac were, so that if there's something one publisher doesn't like, they can ship it elsewhere
@NinjaNicky I've spent £70 too many times to be proud of. Especially when pre-ordering but sometimes you get a nice £10 off from game-base or Argos
@somnambulance Not really a shock P3's being outsold. Everybody knows Atlus' game now. ReReleases upon ReReleases with no upgrade fee options, people are waiting for complete editions.
@Professor_Niggle yeah but the bluepoint games CEO said the same thing. I rather Sony buys specific studios for live service titles than have their single player studios waste time on them. Right now they have 3 specific studios (firewall, haven, and they mobile studio) and one publisher(Bungie) for live service.
@Jay767 If so, then for a fraction of the price of Bungie. I hope that people will remember Big Jimbo as a person who effectively burned money with the takeover of Bungie, and who celebrated his retirement at London Studio, just days before he announced the studio’s closing.
@Max_the_German yeah Bungie was a dud as of right now, who knows maybe marathon will blow up, but I doubt it. Don't forget shutting down pixelopus and Japan studios, two studios that really gave a variety to their lineup.
@somnambulance It's probably because Microsoft has the marketing for Persona 3 Reload and Microsoft don't really promote games anymore.
I have run out of superlatives for this game it is just that good and with the announcement of a new warbond coming next week and mechs soon after it will hopefully get better and better!
@Americansamurai1 I agree, and yeah, contrary to the report of them not getting acquired, I heard it's due to happen soon.
Would much rather the single player studios stick to what they do best, so we don't have another situation like Factions where a dev spends years on a game, only for it to get scrapped.
Arrowhead, Guerrilla, Bungie, Haven, Firewalk, Deviation games (if that's still happening), and whoever else I'm missing are more than enough for the live service push.
@Professor_Niggle definitely agree.
Sounds like propaganda for democracy. No word on the bad patch and nerfs, instead of evening out the weapon balance?
I wonder how popular it'd be if it wasn't on PC too. If PC day one release is helping that much (aside from it being a good game), I can see Sony sticking to this model in the future more and more.
I got Helldivers this morning and managed to get a few missions in before the servers were having issues and not letting me log back in.
The game is fantastic, so much fun, I can’t explain why when my teammate accidentally blows me to pieces I can’t do anything except laugh, in any other game my rage level would be off the charts but in this game I just burst out laughing, it may in part be because of how easily I can get back in the match but never experienced anything like it before.
This game is going to get its claws deep into me and I’ll be hooked in no time at all and I can’t wait
Superb 9/10
I still feel like a lot of the game's success is attributed to the fact that it released on console and PC simultaneously.
@Professor_Niggle I always pre order physical online and I've never spent more than £60. Not once ever. You need to use better sites if you are pre ordering physical for £70 unless you've pre ordered digital via sonys over priced digital store.
@NoHope too much is being made out of this supposed bad patch and the weapon nerfs/balancing are over exaggerated. I've been playing hd2 since it came out on a very regular basis and I honestly don't know what everybody's getting so salty about. The differences are minimal.
@Northern_munkey plug me these sites then my god sir
