Following just over a month of beta testing, Sony has now rolled out the latest PS5 firmware update to all. It's available for download now for everyone that wasn't included in the beta phase. As per the PlayStation Blog, here are all the new features included:
- Controller speaker enhancements. The controller speakers can now produce higher volume sound, allowing you to hear in-game sounds and voice chat audio more clearly.
- Improved noise cancellation. The mic input quality on these controllers has been improved, courtesy of a new AI machine learning model. Background noise from button presses and game audio are suppressed, resulting in a better voice chat experience.
- Players watching Share Screen in full screen mode can now use pointers and emoji reactions to interact with the host’s gameplay.
- You can now adjust the brightness of your PS5 console’s power indicator.
- Unicode 15.1 emoji is supported. You can now use them in messages.
- We've updated the device software of the DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers, PlayStation VR2 headset, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, and Access controller to improve stability.
- We've improved system software performance and stability.
- We've improved the messages and usability on some screens.
- Additionally, later this month a PlayStation App update will enable users to enjoy Share Screen interactions on the app as well.
If you've already had access to the latest PS5 firmware for a few weeks now, what's become your new favourite feature that everyone else should now check out? Let us know in the comments below.

No folders, no themes, no interest. Roll on the PS6, maybe it might be slightly less vile to use and behold.
Any hint on PS Remote Play improvements?
I want the news feed we also have on the ps4. What trophies your friends earned etc. Miss that.
>You can now adjust the brightness of your PS5 console’s power indicator
going to have to figure out how to do this one, the mic/speaker changes sound great as well. Thanks for letting me know whats in the update, was not sure where to look ~Musharna
Though I imagine system firmware is part of the update process, the bulk of the changes are to the system software. Two different things.
Maybe I'm too easily pleased, but the new shutdown animation is cool.
@jt887 @sanderson72 I feel like we've gone backwards since the PS4, not forwards. Iy has just generally been a waste of money for me so far tbh.
@Jamesblob Or maybe some people expect just a bit more from their £500 machine?
Just a thought.
I thought they are releasing a new peach/beige controller when I only saw the pic. LOL. That's a nice color too.
@jt887 I think you can backup PS5 saves onto a removable storage device. But agree I've always found it a bit stingy cloud saves/backups are a paid-for feature, I'm sure they could throw in 5/10 GB of storage per user.
Ah yes, you can really feel the stability and performance this time around
@jt887 Still different artwork for the same games in the Installed and My Collection section
This is the one thing that still bothers me most. I wish the icons displayed at the top of the main Home Screen would use the art from My Collection instead of the crap from the Installed section. This was a non-issue in the early days of the PS5 and was bizarrely introduced in a firmware update a year or so after launch.
Like many others, I also wish we could have proper folders. You know, like the awesome ones that PS4 had. So weird that the new generation actually regressed concerning this highly requested feature.
Removed - flaming/arguing
Can we get a native discord app yet??? Nope
another boring useless update
when’s the - “bring everything they had on the ps3 and ps4 back” update coming ?
@Ernimus_Prime nah sony doesn’t care about fun since they have no competition anymore
@Ernimus_Prime This is the only thing I'm waiting for.
Folders were nice on PS4 and all, but I don't care about them anymore.
Fully integrated Discord is what I'm hoping for now. I mean I can live without it, but the convenience of not having to use my phone when I play Helldivers with PC friendos would be nice.
@LifeGirl I am extremely happy with my PS5 and what I paid for it.
Another useless update. Although, to be honest, the only think I want is the ability to back up PS5 games on a USB. You can only do this for PS4 games.
why are subscription games from PS+ included in your personal catalogue even after they are no longer available on PS+,
Is there a solution for this?
@E5115271 You can only back up PS4 saves on USB, not PS5 ones. And their paid PS Plus cloud saves doesn't even work well. It has some bizarre sort of limit on how many save files you have. When I was a subscriber, it always told me that I am out of space even though I was not even close to the actual GB limit.
@kirkn The PS5 is an impressive piece of hardware and I am very happy with it, even though the only real exclusives are Final Fantasy games which was the selling point for me either way.
That said the OS is bad with frustrating menus, lots of useless options. Some processes like copying games are very slow, the media support is subpar, no actual folder support. And the most bizarre of all games not in the home screen do not update automatically and there is no way to back up PS5 saves.
Wow!!! THOSE are improvements we always wanted!!! (sarcasm)
@belmont You forgot to mention 'total inability to download 2 things at once'.
I know that the PS4 had a dedicated custom chip but surely the Tub o' Lard could use a couple of it's underused cores to perform a similar function? Everything ends up 'queued' while the 4 gets on with downloading up to about 5 things at once and at a faster speed than the 5?
It's truly a horrible OS and UI and it doesn't seem to be getting any better.
@sanderson72 What folders? We have folders.
I want friends feed like i have on ps4.
Great, it's so bright at night.
@Ashkorsair Crazy omission. When I switched to the PS5 late last year, I was shocked this feature was not carried over from the PS4. I would like to share videos and images to the Newsfeed instead of just my friends in the message tab.
@sanderson72 Agreed. Although tbf the download speed is faster (if u have interns hard drive), I don’t understand why it can only download one at a time. When I download in rest mode, it would prioritise updates which I’ve paused (during active mode) and ignore my assigned queue which is weird.
I'm ok with the overall PS5 environment so far... mostly since transfering my ps4 went so smooth while I was certain this was going to be a nightmare.
However, I really miss the custom and animated desktop screens.
I loved those from Persona 5, Transistor, Indivisible, GOW, HDZ as well ass some events like women's day And so on...
Is it supposed to take a minute for “ Rebuilding database “ after the update, b/c that’s what I’m looking at now. 😩 OK that’s done, and recall it happening occasionally on my PS4 on the external USB drive, so it’s probably just that device.🤞Controller updated, time to play, nothing looks all that interesting to mess around with.🤷🏻♂️
Edit: Decided to set the Beep to medium and Light to dim. Wohoo🤪
Wow! Excellent stuff!
Well, just updated the console and thought I'd browse the store - as you do.
Anyway I saw Injustice2 Legendary edition for a little over a fiver and got it.
Grabbed some lunch and checked the download, and bizarrely it downloaded the game TWICE on my external drive. Neither worked.
Deleted both copies of Injustice 2 and restarted the console.
Installed Injustice 2. Error.
Deleted, reinstalled, it now works.
Gotta love me some stability updates
OR
Maybe my PS5 is on its way console heaven...
Looks like the PS4 has just had a new firmware drop - 11.50.
@Aladin_Run PS4-style folders, on the main screen of the dashboard. Not those Game List things which are hidden away in the Game Library (I think - the UI is a mess)?
@WafflingHearts The download speed is quicker for PS5 games and so on as the data is compressed and Kraken unpacks at the other end but PS4 games, updates and so on are much slower than my Pro (with internal SSD) can manage.
I'm not too worried about no themes, but wish they would allow us to change the colors at least.
@rjejr I think that's pretty normal.
And I just saw the new shutdown animation. Pretty nifty.
@Ashkorsair It is completely insane they chucked the trophy news feed. Boggles the mind
the updates are that good wont sleep for a week with all the excitment
@sanderson72 You are right, I totally forgot this. I also have a PS4 with an internal SSD and it downloads up to three stuff simultaneously, if I recall correct. However, as you stated the "copy" can be extremely slow in any PlayStation console depending on set up. It surely is very slow in some cases.
I think Low Frame Rate Compensation would have been great for VRR displays.
Not too fussed about themes and folder as I have to keep deleting games anyway since I refuse to pay £300 for a 4TB SSD.
But I tell you, this gen and last gen seem INCREDIBLY slow at implementing software updates.
Urgh, and I want to play my PS5 tonight as well too 😡
@JalapenoSpiceLife it takes less than a minute to do these updates.
Is it normal all my downloads notifications was deleted after the new update??
@PoeticJustice is it normal that all my downloads notifications was removed after the new update??
The sound improvements are great. Gave me a heart attack the first time it kicked in lolz
@MightyDemon82 still mildly frustrating when you want to turn on and just game imo
@LifeGirl As far as firmware goes, I'd say we have gone backwards for the most part. It looks nice, but when they forced the activity cards on us, it took away the nice artwork a lot of games had for their backgrounds on the Home screen. A real shame that they never gave us the option to revert back if we wanted to, especially if you're somebody like me who has never used an activity card.
The fact that we are this far into the PS5's life cycle and certain things that should be considered crucial are either still missing (folders, news feed from the PS4, etc.) or aren't fixed (the playtime tracking for games, etc.) is pretty bad.
I don't feel the PS5 has been a waste by any means though as there's been plenty of great experiences (Rebirth being the latest), but the team in charge of the system's firmware has been a massive step down from whoever worked on the PS4. There's no way it's all the same people given how reliable the firmware was and the team was at fixing issues.
@KilloWertz ps5 may not be a waste but its definitely not worth $500 and never was. i think most people didn't have a ps4 pro so when they seen some nuances the ps5 had like always-on HDR, faster UI loading, etc they were "wowed" by it i guess
Bizarrely my black levels using HDR look a million times better since this update. Confused.
is this a 500$ chat-machine or what?
@NeonPizza Didn't the DS3 & DS4 also have gyros?
In my experience, a Pro with quick SSD inside (e.g. Crucial MX500) is barely a few seconds behind the PS5 for load times? Just enough time for a quick swig of a cuppa.
It’s probably something on my end, but after I did the firmware update it felt like the in game sounds of FF7 Rebirth (not controller sounds) became flatter and less dynamic.
@sanderson72 Lol. yeah i woke up pissed off too.
when I was thinking this update will bring higher output/better maximum volume for headphones connected to Dual Sense, so with high impedence headphones I wouldn't be forced to use amplifier
@jt887 Exactly. The features being available to use if you choose to is fine, but to force them onto the Home screen is just dumb and unfortunate given undoubtedly how much work went into designing the PS5's firmware in the first place.
@NeonPizza I just find the DS5 somewhat uncomfortable and the 'haptics' seem like nothing new. Also, the chopped off ends to the hand grips irritates me as well (it's an aesthetic thing!)
If they could fix the PS4 rumble compatibility then that would be helpful but I've now seen several games where the PS4 rumble isn't mimicked correctly - you either get nothing or some constant buzzing.
@MidnightDragonDX Yeah if took me a few times not to get used to that ew animation, though something was wrong the first couple of times, but it looks cool, now that I know what it is.
@sanderson72 I didn't even know PS4 had that. Or I forgot 😅
