It's fair to say fans of Final Fantasy Tactics are keen to see a new entry in the series. Demand for the strategic spin-off to return has only become louder with time, especially after the infamous Nvidia leak, which has named many games long before their official announcement — including a Tactics remaster. While hopes of a new game were dashed late last year, Final Fantasy's main man Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) has reopened the possibility.
Speaking in an interview with The Gamer, Yoshi-P expresses his love of the Tactics series, and says a lot of team members previously worked on the games and still love it too.
"We have a lot of our staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 12, so you're going to have a lot of that [Tactics] feel because a lot of the same people are on the team," he tells The Gamer. He goes on to say the team "love Tactics as well", and that it's "probably about time that we do a new one".
As for what a modern Tactics title would look like, don't expect it to share too much in common with Final Fantasy 16. Localisation director Michael-Christoper Koji Fox and director Takeo Kujiraoka aren't convinced the latest main entry makes for a good fit with Tactics. "What would we even call it?" Fox asked, "Final Fantasy 16 Tactics? That’s a lot."
It's encouraging to hear Final Fantasy's top brass talking about bringing Tactics back in some form. We've no clue as to how far away a potential new game might be, but there's enough here to suggest it's on the cards, at least.

Never got round to playing the original but if they can make it as good as the latest Fire Emblem or Unicorn Overlord then it would be a day one for me.
Well the last proper one came out in 2007 so yeah I agree 😆
Ooooh yes please I only played the PSP version of the first one, would love a remaster/ remake of it for current consoles, maybe Tactics A 1&2 as well.
I’d definitely buy them day one I loved the amount I played of War of the Lions although I didn’t play much of it back then, wish my PSP worked properly but it doesn’t.
Definitely buy a remaster/ remake of it day one though
A template of 16 as in the world and the way it uses eikons could work as a tactics game I think. But trying to fit another game into the already established lore and story, kinda like what Valkyrie Profile and FF12 did with their spin off tactics games, probably wouldn't
Either way I hope this come to fruition along with the remaster
The original Tactics was the best. Can't decide if I want it to play the same or be more like Unicorn Overlord.
Just give me a version of this on PS5. It can be a remaster or a port, I don't care.
It probably is, Yoshi, I agree.
Ugh didn't this overrated guy say the new generation of gamers doesn't care about turn-based games anymore a few months before XVI? Why the turn-around? Were sales that bad that made him see some sense and actually give the fans what they want after all or is this just wishful thinking? Kinda funny tbh he says "about time" a year later...
I'd love them to reignite tactics, but have to evolve, since I feel that triangle strategy has topped the genre once I remove my nostalgia goggles.
I'll gladly take Final Fantasy XVI Tactics. Maybe one of the "Outer Continents" is Ivalice?
Grrr absolutely yes. Specially if they added some of the in universe stuff learned from xiv, XII, advance, etc but kept the tone of the original.
@Arisen Nope you twisting what he said…… He said a lot of new generation gamers didn’t grow up with turn based games, not that they don’t care. He is right about that, a lot of new gen gamers are very picky with comes to turn based games I see all the time and the data is there. He also said in the same interview, he is open to a turn based pixel style game for final fantasy 17 and younger blood to be developing the new games. He didn’t switch up as he was already open to the idea.
And I like how journalists and YouTubeers are running with this and saying he's now making the game smh
@ShinNioh I may not remember exactly what he said but I know exactly what I commented back then; I called him a fraud. I'm gen z and every gamer in this gen has played pokemon growing up so what data are you talking about? Also, turn-based games are possibly at the best they've ever been with niche titles such as persona, smt, dq and many indies gaining a huge following. When he said new gen he mustn't have meant gen A because it's still too early for them to be playing ff especially 16.
I’m 23 and so I’m gen z as well. I was more so talking about later gen z and gen a. Also I agree turn based are the best they’ve ever been, that’s why yoshi p wants to make a pixel style turn based game for FF17 and I’m all for it.
