Despite Dragon's Dogma 2 boasting marginally better launch sales than Rise of the Ronin (with both titles releasing on the same day), it's Team Ninja's PS5 exclusive that's managed to stand stronger in the latest Japanese charts. Indeed, Ronin has actually done quite well for itself, shifting an additional 20,000 retail copies over the last week, bringing its total to a fairly respectable 85,000 units. It was topped only by Princess Peach: Showtime!.
Dragon's Dogma 2, meanwhile, has suffered a drop from second down to fifth, selling just 9,000 copies. This isn't an uncommon occurrence when it comes to PlayStation software, but we've got to imagine that Capcom would have wanted a better overall result. Fortunately, the open world RPG seems to have sold incredibly well on a worldwide scale — so it's probably not a huge deal.
Elsewhere, the PS5 continues to tick along towards the 6 million mark. The current-gen console has performed well so far, particularly when compared to the PS4, which has been a relatively slow seller in Japan throughout its lifetime.

I'm a little burnt out on medieval fantasy rpgs. From Elden Ring to FF16 to Baldurs Gate... which is the main put off of Dragons Dogma for me, not its quality.
Both titles are doing fairly well. Given the Japanese historical focus of Rise of the Ronin, it does make sense that it would get a boost from that. It’ll be interesting to see if the same pattern holds in the West
I just don't know why we put so much stock in Japan sales? They clearly perfer mobile/handheld games.
I'm a sucker for anything that is based on historical Japan (GoT, Sekiro, Nioh, etc.) so Rise of the Ronin is my prefered game between the 2. Wasn't all that hyped for DD2. Not saying it's a bad game by any means but I'm just not that big of a fan of medieval fantasy games (with some few exception like Final Fantasy and a couple of souls-game)
Anyway, both games are great. The west seems to be more happy with DD2 while Japan is happy with RoTR. It's a win-win situation IMO
Brought both and much prefer DD2 to be honest.
Princess Peach Showtime OUTSOLD THEM ALL...lol...
And Mario Kart still sold more than DD2...its a 40 year old game at this point...
It may not be up to the standards of other open world giants but Rise of the Ronin is a very solid game in its own right and, after putting some solid time into it, I do think it will find its audience. It’s a slow burn but I’m finding it very enjoyable.
Ronin beating DD2 gives me hope.
@MikeOrator I think everyone thought it said "[NSFW] Princess Peach" and hit the preorder button.
@Lup Hope of what though? ACNH is on that list at almost 8 million copies. Whatever hope you had should all be lost after seeing that.
@NEStalgia
As a lifelong Nintendo fan, it still shocks me as much as it thrills me when they continue to, month after month, dominate the market with that #*@&ing Switch.
Props to Rise of the Ronin. I’m currently playing it and it’s surprisingly great. I’d say it’s a strong 7.5. I’m having a blast with it.
@Kraven @Jimmer-jammer @Ashina
Which Assassin's Creed game is best to compare Rise of Ronin to... it looks a lot like Origins with some ACII thrown in.
@MikeOrator I think with these stats itd help if they put things in proportion so that it takes into account that all switch games are logically going to sell more because there are more switch owners. Perhaps in ratio of consoles owned to game units sold the playstation games would show a better number.
@MikeOrator like Valhalla with a soul.
@MikeOrator Been years since I played ACII but having played through Origins fairly recently, I’d say it’s a fair comparison. There are various differences but the biggest differences for me personally are the depth of the combat system, customization and general freedom for player expression in Ronin far outweigh that of Origins, resulting in a more fulfilling Action/RPG experience, if that’s what you’re looking for.
Once again I said this and Push didn't listen but Asia has LOVED Ronin a lot more. They have in fact questioned the West and their taste in games based on the metascore. Look at the HK and Japanese store to see Ronin doing well digitally while Dogma 2 has nearly dropped out of the top 12.
It's shocking how much the japanese market shrunk with the years.
Or well... shifted to mobile i guess.
I remember the ps1 days when we saw hits every week and it wasn't uncommon to see 100k+ numbers.
@Swizzle You can always get it and save it for later or wait till the price comes down while you play other titles. The amount of FOMO that goes on with gamers is pretty absurd.
I once saved the Dark Souls 2 DLC until years after release and many completed games. It felt like a special present when I was a bit depressed and looking for something engaging to play! Felt great!!!
So the 6/10 game "beat" the 10/10 game?! Guess peoples taste are more like mine than Push Square's... 🤷😉 Rise Of The Ronin is a 9/10 for me, I done everything and is now in 3rd and last chapter. 🥰
@Swizzle
maybe more Switches sell because they have more games people want...
I don't really care for reviews, but I did find it funny that a lot of commenters agreed with the review on here, and said they'd avoid the game.
I've played well over 20 hours now, and I consider it a very strong title. Perhaps not 10/10, but I'm having a lot of fun.
Perhaps step back and reflect what you're going to type first, before making yourself look like a fool
Rise of the Ronin is doing really well in Japan (Asia in general).... The game still top 5 in the Japanese PS store.... while Dragon's Dogma 2 is out the top 10 (Stellar Blade already top it in the store).
DD2 isn't a bad game per se, but it isn't a 9/10 and/or 10/10 game at all like some reviews make it out to be... also, the game combat loop isn't as fun and challenging as Rise of the Ronin.
@Splat You should headover to Gematsu and find the Famitsu Sales articles, every western user in there end up graduating from NPCs to Sales analysts hahah
@Zeke68 Looks like word of mouth is spreading, this is good. Kind of reminds me when Aegis Rim was first released and good word of mouth helped giving it a boost.
