Update: In a change made to the Last Chance to Play section on PS5, Teardown has been removed from the list, suggesting it was mistakenly listed as leaving the service. As such, 34 games are now marked for removal on 21st May 2024.
Original story: Sony is having a significant clearout of PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium games on 21st May 2024, and the long list of titles leaving the two tiers has just been extended by another 10 games. What first stood at 25 games was extended by one by the addition of Horizon Zero Dawn just under two weeks ago. Now, though, the total stands at 35 games after an update to the Last Chance to Play section on PS5.
The new additions, meaning they'll leave the PS Plus service on 21st May 2024, are:
- Teardown (PS5)
- MX vs ATV Legends (PS5, PS4)
- ELEX 2 (PS5, PS4)
- Wreckfest (PS5, PS4)
- Darksiders: Warmastered Edition (PS4)
- Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition (PS4)
- Darksiders 3 (PS4)
- Darksiders Genesis (PS4)
- Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning (PS4)
Here's the original list of 26 PS5, PS4 games also leaving on 21st May 2024:
- Abzu (PS4)
- Adr1ft (PS4)
- How to Survive 2 (PS4)
- The Artful Escape (PS5, PS4)
- Ashen (PS4)
- Last Stop (PS5, PS4)
- I Am Dead (PS4, PS4)
- Absolver: Downfall (PS4)
- My Friend Pedro (PS4)
- The Messenger (PS4)
- Jotun (PS4)
- Sundered (PS4)
- World of Final Fantasy (PS4)
- This Is the Police (PS4)
- This Is the Police 2 (PS4)
- ELEX (PS4)
- Monster Jam Steel Titans 2 (PS4)
- Minit (PS4)
- Observation (PS4)
- Final Fantasy IX (PS4)
- Final Fantasy VII (PS4)
- Final Fantasy VIII Remastered (PS4)
- Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (PS4)
- Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition (PS4)
- Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (PS4)
- Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition (PS4)
All the additional titles now carry the warning: "Offer ends 21/5/2024 [at] 10:00." This now brings the total number of games leaving PS Plus to 35, on the same day the lineup of titles in the May 2024 refresh will drop. Do you have any of these titles in your backlog? Why Horizon Zero Dawn? Isn't it Sony's title? Sony really works in mysterious ways. Why not keep old prestigious titles with diminishing sales on the service to increase its appeal and keep it competitive?
Here is a great example as to why subscription services are false economy. Because whilst it looks great on paper, right here are 35 games leaving the service and I'm not going to miss any of them.
How many of you can truthfully say that you've played more than 10% of the PS Plus library via the service itself?
I hope they will add a lot of good games this may to extra and premium tiers but who am I kidding?
It's really dirty to give us so little notification for these additional removals. Not even two weeks?
I have decided to bow out of PS Plus Extra and Game Pass. Whilst it is good to have a pool of game to pick from, but in reality, it's too much. Too much crap as well. If there's a game I want to play, buying it would just be the best and probably cheapest option. I'll pay for online play only.
I don't feel like the game sub services are healthy.
I actually need to finish I Am Dead and Observation before they leave. I've been a bit too busy and distracted by other games lately.
@edgar14 Rumor is they’re making a remaster of Zero Dawn so if it’s true, they’re taking it off to get sales off of that. If they announce it anytime soon.
Sony's service is meh, but it feels more sustainable. Gamepass is obviously not sustainable, since they are debating putting Cod on the service. I am a massive enthusiast gamer and I struggle to get through enough games to make Gamepass or Extra worth it.
What is the point of PS Plus Extra/Premium if you can’t even count on first party titles like Horizon Zero Dawn staying on the service?
@bowzoid I'm convinced they lead to burnout. I'd love to know if anyone has done a study on it.
@CrispyMango92 Sony is remastering Zero Dawn before Infamous 1-2? Killzone 1-3? Whoever runs Sony is under some voodoo spell and thinks Horizon is the greatest IP that has ever existed.
Hopefully the next lot of additions includes a large selection of games to make up for it. Otherwise you can say the service has lost some value by losing double the amount of games that get added in one month.
@bowzoid True, I've always thought this. I remember when people were raving about games like Persona 4, 5 and Reload coming to Gamepass. But they're like 100+ hour games each, at what point is it better value to just buy one of them?
My only disappointment was that Teardown was actually a timed bomb disposal game.
Don’t care about old games leaving. With Dave the Diver, Animal Well, and Tales of Kenzara all launching day 1, that’s a bigger hook for me. New games=saving money=finally worthwhile. This is the best month we’ve had for Plus in ages. Sub services are a waste without new quality games. Cancelled my Gamepass sub for exactly this reason. PS+ might’ve saved my sub with this month for me.
@Colt22 100% agree with this! Such a good library of games going to waste
Why don't Sony put their whole first party Ps4 catalogue onto the service and maybe even their entire Ps3 catalogue onto premium, surely there's nothing stopping them as they are first party.
We'll get the added plus games this Wednesday so hopefully it's a good selection.
Teardown should stay in your library as it was one of the monthly plus games, as opposed to a catalogue addition. I think any way at least. Maybe Liam or someone can confirm.
Teardown, noooo! I still play it from time to time, it's not even been on there a year!
I use the service as a supplement, I don't buy many new games so then plus games fill in gaps for the year.
@Weebleman I'm afraid Teardown was PS Plus Extra, not Essential: https://blog.playstation.com/2023/09/28/teardown-is-coming-to-ps5-on-november-15/#:~:text=Now%2C%20I'm%20excited%20to,Plus%20Extra%20and%20Premium%20memberships).
@Bunchesopuppies yeah game was definitely disappointing, was hoping the game was more like the first level
@Weebleman Teardown was actually a PS+ Extra day 1 release. It wasn’t on essential.
@Colt22 I agree with you but Horizon 1+2 has probably sold more than all of those games combined. It’s over 32million copies sold according to Wiki. All we can do is not buy the game (if it is real) and hope it sells bad so Sony can get the message that we don’t want remasters of games that clearly don’t need it.
I think I am in the same boat as a lot of people suscribed to extra for remainder of my sub. I just don't have time to make use of it have such a big backlog never get chance to really use it. Will be downgrading down to essential in September.
@LifeGirl For me the value isn’t necessarily in the percentage of the catalogue that I play from the service, rather just finding a few that speak to me and that I actually finish. Playing 5 titles per year is a rough break even point for the subscription price and so far it has met that threshold the last two years.
Most of the games leaving the service this time around are not of interest to me, but I have had once or twice that I had to rush and play a game earlier than planned because it was going to leave (The Quarry last year, for example). Titles leaving the service are indeed annoying, but usually something is added at the same time so the sheer number of titles I’m interested in stays roughly stable.
@edgar14 I'm thinking they're about to announce the "Horizon Zero Dawn Actually Complete PS5 Mega Edition" so naturally they'll pull the PS4 version to boost sales/engagement with the inevitable "new version."
Back in September, I downgraded from Premium to Essential. In the 8 months since, here's the stats:
Number of games on Extra or Premium that I wanted to play and hadn't already = 0
Number of times I regretted going down to Essential = 0
So yeah, it's Essential for me from here on out.
@tangyzesty. Good choice.im the same also.essential you keep the game. But premium it doesn't stay for a while and some games doesn't come back.and a lot of these games are cheap.just buy it.theres always a sale on psn.and my backlog of games is huge.word up son
Most of these Games i already Own so this doesn't bother me to much that and alot of these are almost always apart of the psn sales we get.
Games leaving the service are a big reason that I downgraded from the higher tier of PlayStation Plus. I like how Essentials lets you play games that you claim indefinitely as long as you are a subscriber. Granted, I already own most of the good ones that ever hit the list and rarely download any of the others, which is why I just unsubscribed entirely since I am not a multiplayer gamer, other than FFXIV.
i hope all this netflix for games thing flops ASAP.
Well i thought id have time to play teardown but guess not XD

Subscription services are not there need to be completed, there just needs to be a wide enough range that there is always something to play so that you feel you get value for money.
For example no one will have listened to even 0.1% of Spotify or watched 1% of Netflix, this isn't the point. You don't have to play/watch/listen to even a small percentage of them to get a benefit.
@LifeGirl 10% of a huge number would still be a huge number.
The real question is, how many games do you play per year vs the amount you paid for the subscription.
@themightyant well said (saw your post after posting mine).
Not a single Streaming service out there is doing right buy the consumer. Why is there no expiration date for every single game from the moment the game joins the service, Sony knows exactly how long the deals last. And if there are cases were it is unclear, give a 3 months warning.
Don’t get me started on Premium, I am appalled by the offerings they provided so far, given all the classic games they own and could bring in.
Pay More, Get Less. That seems to have been the PS+ offer for a while now. I think there's a good number of people like me with stacked subs flattering the numbers, but these will start to fall off the cliff in a year or so.
@naruball Agreed. Also more broadly I have no problem with this "purge". PS+ Extra currently has 485 games and Premium 966 they are currently good about adding new titles to extra to keep it fresh, it's only normal some games leave, there is still plenty to play imho.
I bet you the value of PS Plus will continue declining now that xbox has kind of given up competing with PS.
Play Teardown before it goes. Loads of fun
Oh dear, I've literally just started playing darksiders genesis with my wife yesterday 😭
Wonder what will replace it.
The only reason I have re subbed to Premium for the next 12 months is because it was £65. No idea why... 🤷♂️
@LiamCroft God damn it. That means I'm gonna have to buy it as my kids love it.
Cheers for letting me know Liam (and the other folks in the comments as well)
Personally, I’m gutted.
In November I subscribed to PS+ and paid a year in advance largely because of the Final Fantasy games. Now almost all are being removed.
I’ve just bought a physical version of FF15 Royal Edition as I’m heading for the Platinum trophy and don’t want to be rushed by this.
I own Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, but also want to complain about it’s removal.
Sony is such trash adding these games last min like this. Would have tried to platinum Teardown if it wasn't such short notice.
I can tell you are all very upset. Sorry. But I just came here to tell you try Wreckfest before it goes. It’s good, silly video game fun. And there’s no real story to get attached to. Just go smash some cars for a minute before it’s too late…
I'm all right with this. There's always something to play
Yeah I will definitely not be extending my PSPlus Extra another year! The little purges were fine, but now it's getting ridiculous!
@bowzoid yup I had Extra for a year and after the initial dopamine hit wore off, I realised I prefer curating my own collection of games. I only have time for the games that I'm truly passionate about. I did however complete Rift Apart, poured 100hrs into Death Stranding Directors Cut, Platinumed Stray. So all in all I got my monies worth!
Only recently got myself a ps5 and put around 50 hours into Horizon forbidden West and now it's leaving
Do we think it might come back soonish?
I can see why this might sting a bit for some people, there's some damn good games in this list. However for me the simple fact is I'd already bought all the games I was interested in long before they were added on plus, including all the final fantasy games, horizon and KoA... And the sting of seeing a game like Horizon zero dawn leave psplus stings a lot less than the sting of seeing forbidden west added to the service less than 3 months after I dropped £100 on the pre-order.
I can see how this all fits in with Jim Ryan's narrative that they want to focus more on live service and making games available multi platform but it doesn't do anything to shatter the argument that psplus is, at its core, fundamentally broken.
Let's see the garbage they give us after this purge.
