Update: In a statement provided to Eurogamer, UK video game retailer GAME has quickly denied the report it plans to stop stocking video games in its physical stores. It reads: "This reporting is categorically not true. GAME continues to support the physical gaming market, offering a wide-range of physical games, hardware, software, accessories and digital gift cards, in stores and online."
Original story: Boxed copies of video games are out and even more shelves stuffed with Funko Pops are on their way in, apparently, as a new report claims the UK retailer GAME will stop stocking video games. Sources speaking to e-sports outlet Gfinity say stores will only offer games and hardware via pre-orders instead of allowing customers to browse its stock in-store.
Those talking to Gfinity are said to be disappointed by the decision as it destroys the chain's "identity". This would be another step back from the physical video game market by the chain, which has recently stopped accepting pre-owned software and will soon kill its rewards program. Should the move prove to be true and come to fruition, it would mean customers only have reason to enter the shop to pre-order a game they already know they want ahead of time, and then collect it come the release date.
Brick-and-mortar GAME shops have already become a bit of a rarity over the years, as many individual stores have been shut down in favour of having space in larger Sports Direct outlets, with both brand governed by former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley. The move will push consumers online — where many, much cheaper options exist — or to the PS Store for a digital copy.
Video game purchases are already heavily weighted towards digital versions in general nowadays, and in the UK, this preference is now likely to increase even further. It may soon be the case where CEX is the only outlet on the high street actually stocking video games, and even then, the company offers second-hand goods rather than brand new releases. There are also some independent stores, but they generally have more of a retro focus.

GAME are terrible to be honest, for many reasons. But I don't look forward to them closing as they're literally the only competition to CEX (as mentioned in the article). Amazon are taking the p*** these days too with their £35 minimum spend for "free" delivery.
What's even the point of keeping GAME around doing this.
I haven't really brought physical since early Xbox one and ps4 gen so I get why it's happend but i still got the odd game here and there on disc and still liked going into there to have a browse and abit of a chat with people that also liked video games.
I always really wanted to work there back in the day as well 😅.
Anyone remember Gamestation? Those we're the days.
I wonder how it would've played out had Game not bought them.
Welp this is a sad way to go to sleep 😴
@AdamantiumPriest GameStation was elite; I fondly remember the 4 for £20 deals on PS2 games.
I remember buying Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance on release day from Game - I then had to go back and buy a PS2 Memory Card as I didn't have enough storage space on my other two!
Bought my PS3 fatty (R.I.P.) from Game too just after Sony announced that they were finishing off the 60Gb units and only making the 40Gb ones. Stock had completely sold out within a week! That said, PS4 original from Argos, PS4 Pro from Shop To & PS5 from Currys.
Game's used selection was dwindling anyway and CEX is just so much better.
I trust there'll be changing their name from Game to avoid action under trade descriptions. Maybe Junk would be more fitting?
I can't help but think this is a bad move from them. Even if all that other stuff is the money maker for them, if I'm out and about I'll often wander into Game to browse the games and may make the occasional impulse purchase; maybe I'm the wrong generation now but I can't imagine ever being motivated to bother going in there if there's no games in there.
So Supermarkets stop stocking physical games, and now game. CEX is around for those like me who don’t mind second hand, but were does this leave new physical game sale when the only option is to wait a day or two after release by ordering online. An even bigger push towards expensive digital only purchases it seems, with no sell on value or second hand market.
On the other hand, Game have been crappy and expensive for a long while now so I’m not too sad to see them go. Just wish there was an alternative.
I swear Game are tying to kill physical. But tbh who really goes to them? They're extortionate, cheaper to buy online and get delivered
@AdamantiumPriest oh yes, a lot of fond memories of Gamestation. Genuinely knowledgeable staff too
This feels like the end of an era and really sad. I don’t think Game as a store will survive this now as people will just pre order online for delivery, so game will become a funko shop and too many other places sell these to make them viable.
Also the reduction of physical media will also hit CEX as a there will be less copies going around so wouldn’t surprise me if we see them holding high prices for longer.
Be honest, when does anyone buy from Game? Their preowned are the same price as new. Sports Direct chap ruined the company.
May as well just re name the shops then. Not surprised anyway, the last couple of times ive been in one it's been about 50/50 games and other stuff.
If this is true, it will clearly hasten GAME's death.
You will (slowly but surely) own nothing and be happy
I tried. I'm lucky enough that paying the couple of £ difference between Amazon and GAME's prices wasn't a big deal to me, and I used to go into my local GAME to get physical games whenever I could to try and support the local High St (or, if you rather, the local 'House of Frasier GAME Concession Stand' as it later became). But our local House of Frasier closed a few months ago so that's gone too now.
Over to Amazon I guess.
As much as I don't care about physical games, they'll never go away so don't worry
This is sad.
I dislike buying software from PS Store or Xbox Live, as this content is not “owned” as such, and can effectively be “turned off”, am I correct?
I know that this is to do with the lack of sales of “physical software”. Games on disc.
I dislike this trend towards purely downloaded games, and would much rather have my games on disc. I cannot be the only one, can I?
Ironically, is it false advertising for the store called “GAME” to no longer sell games?
bummer I loved Game as a kid. It's probably about time for it to shuffle off this mortal coil though. I can't imagine one good reason to go there over somewhere like CEX, or even just buying a game off amazon if it's a new release.
GAME seem to have forgotten why they got into the gaming business, bring back Electronic Boutique!
Don't understand the complaints. Game need that valuable shelf space for more Funko pop figures that won't sell.
As others have said Gamestation was brilliant. It was a sad day when Game bought them out
Hit(dot)co(dot).UK is now dead too
I am a die hard physical disk gamer.
But even I am beginning to see that physical is dying and I will eventually go all digital.
Ah, the rose-tinted memories of my youth!
@AndyKazama Yes. Any idea what has happened there? It seems to have just gone down over the weekend and there is no new anywhere about what has happened. Trying to remember if I had any live preorders with them 😣
I fondly remember game and gamestation and I use to enjoy the banter with the staff but for many many years game has been on a steep decline. The last thing I bought in game was the collector edition of avatar on ps5 and that was through their online website. I only went to them as they where they only stockist that was selling the full collector edition. I think the writing was on the wall with the end of trade in and then when they cancelled their loyalty card
I still prefer physical media and get the majority of my games through amazon as we have prime.
They really need to start thinking of changing their name now. Game is dead long live the toy shop 😂😂😂
@thefourfoldroot1 Physical is sadly very, very close to dead now.
I can't remember the last time I bought a physical game in a store.
I buy everything from Amazon or ToyMaster now.
@PSme Brick and mortar game stores are dying.
Physical games have a fair bit of life in them, so physical die hards like us don't need to worry just yet. The main way to buy physical is online storefronts now.
tbh I only have so much space anyway, so if we did switch to an all digital future based on the gog.com model I wouldn't complain.
@get2sammyb Do you think it's going to flatline though?
Limited Run Games and the likes do well, and collector's editions seem to be here to stay.
There's a relatively small but dedicated base for it.
GAME in Surrey Quays is far more like a toy shop then a game store these days.
As a Geordie and huge Newcastle fan, screw Mike Ashley.
As a gaming fan it's sad to see brick and mortar game stores become extinct, just like Blockbuster.
If it wasn’t for the fact that GAME got exclusivity on most of the Collectors Editions, I’d have stopped using them years ago. Nowadays with most CEs coming with codes rather than discs, there is less reason for me to buy sets nowadays anyway, so I can’t see myself using GAME in any way moving forward..
The Game Collection ftw!
@get2sammyb in the last 10 years the vinyl industry has gone from niche to outselling CDs for most artists.
We're still printing DVDs nearly 20 years after they've been supplanted as the best physical format.
The same thing's been said about books for years ("why have a book when you can have a Kindle?") yet they're thriving.
I think your opinion is more speculative than anything that's based on trends, and this is coming from a fansite of the only company that bank on physical media being wanted (Sony having an interest in the Blu-Ray market means they'll always be trying to combine those products). And based on all the other "dying" formats, there's a fairly confident reasoning that they'll be kept around.
They did manage to get me a PS5 on release day so I will give Game some credit. But that was their online store as I don't think I have visited town in about 4 years, its just easier and often cheaper to buy things online than visit brick and mortar stores. Part of the problem is that towns are just making it harder for people to visit actual shops.
Lol as someone who doesn't live in Europe, this reads like an Onion article someone would make about GameStop. Pretty funny.
@Rob_230 Reddit search suggested just before the weekend. Fortunately they didn't take payment at pre order.
Unfortunately they were a great source for hard to find games and are now gone 🥺
This article should be labelled as "RUMOUR"
@AdamantiumPriest Yes, the one near me was tiny and it stunk of body odour badly most of the time but it was like a gamer/nerd den so on that note I kind of miss it lol.
And it’s been debunked.
@Kanji-Tatsumi Yeah amazon really needs better competition
It was a fairly believable story. The selection of video games in my nearest store is lousy these days, since figurines and other merch take up much of the limited space.
They've denied it but I think it'll happen before it transitions into an online only store selling codes at face value before going under full stop
This is more a sign that GAME was a terrible business and less a sign that physical is dying. Online retailers are still strong and we have seen from Sony's own leaked internal figures that 65% of first party AAA titles were sold on physical NOT the other way around which is the figure they give to PR/investors across all games... including digital only etc.
Ahhh Game,, where Pre-owned games were more expensive than the new unsold versions
@Mustoe Still don't care about the topic really, but physical WILL stay as long as consoles come with a disc-drive or cartridge slot. Of COURSE you can't take my words quite that literally. No, they won't be around for the next 1000 years, but you can count on the next two generations (so about 20 years at least) to support them. The last domino will fall when Nintendo drops support, but they are very japanese-focused and their customers swear by physical. This will take quite a while yet, buddy.
I want to say sad news for UK gamers who collects physical but then i see the update which isn't true.
I buy my games from Amazon and eBay
@themightyant yeah physical sales are much higher than being reported publicly to try and manipulate the market. Demand is still there and it’s still high
They can pry my physical games from my cold, dead hands!
There will come a point where the only place to get physical copies of games will be supermarkets or selected online retailers and that will be sad.
@Sakai He is invested in keeping the UK high street going ill give him that even if he is a money grabbing goat.
I buy only physical games, but GAME make it tougher to support them, when they charge for delivery to store. I think it's around £4.99.
@Kanji-Tatsumi The same here in the Netherlands there are almost no options left anymore. My favorite shop that was more expensive but had really nice workers was closed down. The only reason I went there was because of their staff nice people with interest in gaming. It's a pity it's going to be a few massive companies that will own us completely in the end digital only is going to bring that.
Off topic I can tell you one thing Xbox 360 games are starting to rise in price in 2md hand shops, only 1 month and a week left till the 360 store gets shut down and 2nd hand shops are starting to raise them. Blue Dragon is now £15-20 even some PS3 games are stupid high GTA4 and DLC is £12-18 used it's starting to get a little crazy and that's CEX prices
I really miss the early 2000s with electronics boutique, Game station days
Their website seems useless. I was looking for a second-hand game. Their website said which store has a few copies. Went there and they actually don't have any second hand at all. Guys told me that every store's second-hand stock was moved to a central warehouse.
So then why I should bother with it if the information is false. With delivery cost, it wasn't any cheaper than Cex or others in my town.
I feel like GAME's upper management wants to close all their store's doors on purpose one way or another with their practices.
@Mustoe I think the only place around me to browse games now is CeX. There's reportedly a Game concession in Selfridges, but no. Thanks.
We used to have 2 Game stores, one was a GameStation before Game took them over, and I spent not inconsiderable amounts of money in both them.
I saw the death of physical media in the cards over a decade ago when I went into the flagship HMV to spend at least £500 on CD's, and they'd shrunk the metal section to 2 tiny racks so I literally bought 2 CD's, and I'm pretty sure they were 2 for £10. Made me sad then, and even sadder now.
@CrashBandicoat I got my first PS2 from 'Smiths the week they came out! Randomly wandered in and they'd just had a truck pull up, they literally rolled a cage full of them past me as I was browsing PS1 games! 2 seconds later I heard the dreaded "may I help you, sir?" and I was like, "yeah, actually! Gimme one of them!"
Seeing as many in my own country for just swap meets or certain retailers too regardless of the state of GAME or CEX or others in the UK it's sad to see how much things are changing around the world of physical. Some of us will keep going but if only collectors I am not sure. The physical experience is just so good to find gems or any major games I want. Not digital only. I don't find it convenient at all let alone appealing. I get more enthusiasm for physical. Sure the drive/bus trip there but otherwise that's nothing compared to the experience of going there all the time.
A digital store/app isn't as fun as exploring what I want when most of these digital options the searching sucks, you don't always find anything that great even if more are digital and besides the constant advertising compared to physical when you can ignore most of it anyway let alone better prices physical then very much still waiting a while to be good enough discounts on digital. Physical any day even for how bad the prices are then USD prices I have to deal with.
Well more AU/EU to keep looking forward to of physical releases for how long left it has I guess. Not collectors edition only releases I don't want that future because of how I shop.
Then again if we see more digital code physical then those companies can get what's coming to them no purchase. They choose to not handle the multiplayer download or the Japanese audio or enough balancing of game bundles. That's on them for being lazy not for me to accept their laziness.
There is a reason I only bought Drawn to Life physical digital code on Switch, I wasn't getting it on mobile or PC. Major IPs I couldn't care less niche games sure I want that physical because of how particular and unique case of release they are over a digital purchase. I wasn't buying Gear Club Unlimited 2 that way I got the definitive edition all on one card and the standard edition with the Porsche DLC code and never used that code at all. Codes like that I don't mind for DLC or themes. Otherwise pass. Bundling 3 games and 1 on the card or part of pass.
Also Spyro reignited 1st on the disk Activision can get stuffed for that.
Any other old games wanting digital codes because they think they won't sell with a cart that's on them.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@nitram2k11 Electronic Boutique!!! Now that's a blast from the past!
I can’t imagine something like this ever happening in Kuwait to begin with due to the extremely loyal market so it’s unimaginable that this even happened in the UK.
Digital only was always gonna happen but at least we've had two generations of physical games since Microsoft's digital only backtrack.
@Jaxx420 Yeah. The only thing is that that the supermarkets only really stock the top 20 game at best
@Saucymonk Yep. Hence it would be sad when they become the only physical high street retailer.
LAME.
We were all thinking it.
I buy physical copies nowadays and totally against digital, if its only digital no more games for me
