Update (11th July 2024): Arc System Works has officially confirmed the project, named Double Dragon Revive. As you can see in the announcement trailer above, it is indeed a brand new beat-'em-up with a 3D art style. Going by the very end of the video, it appears to be in development at Yuke's; the team's previous game was AEW: Fight Forever. It's heading to PS5 and PS4 next year, and that's about all we know for now.
Original Story: Japanese game studio Arc System Works is working on a new entry in the Double Dragon series. That's according to Famitsu magazine (via Ryokutya2089), stating the game will see the franchise "reborn in 3D".
Apparently, this new 3D Double Dragon title will reproduce the arcadey action of the classic games, with modernised controls and difficulty settings. Jimmy Lee, Billy Lee, Roper, Abobo, and other characters will be included, presented in a new 3D style.
Arc System Works is a team known for its stylish fighting games such as Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Strive. It acquired the rights to Double Dragon some time ago, with the last mainline entry being the middling Double Dragon 4. While details on the upcoming game are slim right now, it sounds like a reinvention of sorts, which may be just the ticket.
Famitsu states the game will release for PS5 and PS4 in 2025, so we'll have to wait and see how it shapes up. Are you interested in a new Double Dragon? Tell us in the comments section below.

Sounds like it could potentially be awesome. I'm in!
This sounds solid, but I’ll have to see gameplay first. What made Double Dragon so memorable to me as a kid was its gorgeous art design and soundtrack. It really amplified the whole experience for me. I’m looking forward to this!
We've seen a few run-ups at this before — I think Double Dragon Neon was arguably the most successful - although that felt more like a celebration of the whole franchise than an attempt to reboot or reinvent the original — plus the soundtrack by Jake Kaufman is one of the best things I've ever heard, and not just in videogames.
Interested to see where they go with this, though — DD is a series that consistently seems to pop up and surprise us.
That game felt more like a direct sequel to the NES iterations of the series, and only really served to highlight how glaringly pared down it was compared to that of the arcade.
Hooooooly, incredible hype! DD adding another D!
If they can modernise it at retain a 80s/90s anime aesthetic I'm sold.
A new SOR and now a new DD in development?! Would be great if there's a new Final Fight too!
I'm quite excited but i want ArcSys themself make the game and not outsource to Wayforward or other devs. And yeah i'm dissapointed with DD 4 although i'm not yet played DD Gaiden because the chibi artstyle looks weird...
@PuppetMaster The Street Fighter 6 Story Mode felt like a 3D Final Fight RPG
I really really liked Gaiden even if the chibi style wasn't my cup of tea.
Im 100% interested.
DD is always a mixed bag with me. Some games I like, others I don’t.
I’m excited about a new Double Dragon game but I wish Dotemu the team behind Street of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge was developing it them guys know how to put together amazing beat em ups
Huh, so a new 3D Streets of Rage and a new 3D Double Dragon both coming soonish. Count me in!
Hopefully this isnt some mistranslation thing cuz an arcsys developed 3D brawler has me foaming.
ASW doing what they do best. Bring it!!
Need to see gameplay first but yeah, this could end up rocking.🤘
Double Dragon Neon is good. So looking forward to it.
I'm interested
Roper? Tf is a Roper.
Perhaps this is what RGG meant the other day when they said their next game would be a surprise?
I've only played blazblue from arc system works. And I only know them to make 2D fighting games. Have they done a 3D game before? I'm curious to see what it looks like.
@Andee Yeah SF 6 World Tour feels like Capcom is experimenting for a new Final Fight. And it would be nice too if they used God Hand combat.
But i personally wish a new Final Fight is still traditional 2D scrolling beat em up.
i miss blazblue
Yo ArcSys already released screenshot and a teaser trailer

It's Yuke who developed the game and it looks pretty good
Article updated with new trailer.
Eh, not so impressed but it could have looked worse I guess.
@Andee Double Dragon Neon is fantastic. The soundtrack is sooooo good.
Oh my god. They revealed it so quickly. I can’t wait. I can’t get enough of 3D beat ‘em ups. Such a cool genre that’s neat to see explored.
It looks dreadful, I love it!
Very good news!
This title reminds me those early times that my brother and I, had been enjoying Double Dragon 3 and finished it in co-op mode in NES, hundreds of times.
I hope they can make it with focusing on realism something like Sifu.
Oh, I just watched the trailer.
Much dissapointing!
Take away such these effects
It’s Awful
Is there any descriptor about the game content according to ESRB rating?
I saw the game was rated Teen, but I need to know the content descriptor and the other age rating by CERO and PEGI because I'm very strict when investigating rated Teen games.
trailer looks naff. was hoping for same style visuals as guilty gear
Double dragon games is always fun.word up son
I have fond memories of playing the old games with my brothers, but this generic KOF knockoff mobile game art style is really not doing it for me, especially considering the outstanding visuals ASW has created in their other games.
@MrList why?
Hmm, doesn’t look too bad honestly. And I pretty much grew up with Yukes with all those WWE Smackdown games back in the day. I’ll keep an eye out for it.
@PlayStation_Dawg1994 My thoughts exactly! Hopefully this dev have taken note from those two outstanding games. Double Dragon on NES and SOR on Genesis have a special place in my gaming history.
Looks okay, I actually hope wayforward will be doing this in the style of river city girls, with more serious story (unlike double dragon neon), purchasable moves, and side story quests.
It looks solid but I need some raw gameplay to truly judge. Still I'm a bit bummed out now. I was hoping arcsys was doing it and actually trying their hand at action games. I dont think theres ever been a yuke's game that I was really interested in. Hopefully the final game will look better. Its still nice to see these classic bralwers coming back in a different style than the same pixel art stuff we've been getting
Definitely not liking this! Love what they did with Streets Of Rage! This looks very uninteresting. Pass!
@Worlock_ed Isn't it? I'm pretty sick to death of the whole '80s nostalgia circle jerk by now, but in 2012 it was still relatively unique and original to hear such a heartfelt homage to the era, and with such variety too
