Nexon is building on its surprise free-to-play hit The First Descendant with the PS5, PS4 title's first major update, which drops today. The big headline addition is the arrival of two new Descendants to play as, complemented by another hard mode Void Intercept Battle and a bonus ultimate piece of equipment named the Peace Maker. There will be a variety of new skins and make-up options too alongside some technical improvements and bug fixes. You can view the full list of patch notes through the link.
The two new playable Descendants take the form of Ultimate Valby and Luna. The former is an ult version of the standard Valby, and she comes with attacks like Spiral Tidal Wave and Hyrdo Pressure Bomb. There'll then be a whole host of new materials to scavenge for her. We then have Luna, a completely new character, whose abilities work to the beat of the music. Depending on the skill you activate, a different type/genre of music will play.
A new hard mode Void Intercept Battle will be on offer after downloading the update, against Gluttony. Beating it rewards you with the Hungry Sonic External Components Set and a blueprint for a new ultimate weapon: the Peace Maker. Using an effect called Single Reload for Peace, you can "fire the loaded ammo in a single quick burst when taking an aimed shot" after reaching the maximum number of stacks.
The patch is also making some improvements under the hood for both PS5 and PS4. For Sony's current-gen system, AMD FSR 3.1 has been applied while the PS4 should better use its memory allocation and the resolution should be about five per cent better. There are many more tweaks you can learn about in the patch notes.
Having attracted more than 10 million players since launch and becoming one of the most played games on PS5, new content will be welcome for its large playerbase. Will you be firing up The First Descendan to check out what its first big update offers? Let us know in the comments below.

Looking forward to the new boss. Shame no new story content till end of year. Just got Ultimate Gley (can't say no to infinite rocket launcher)will be leveling her up for a while so I can take my time grinding for these 2.
Fantastic! Perfect timing for a nice peaceful day in the dark away from the sun. I shall only raise my head for dinner later.
I've played almost every day since launch, which has surprised me! Great little game to blast away a few hours!
Started this game last week. Gameplay feels quite good. My major complaint would be that now being in the 5th zone, I’m just repeating the same style of missions over and over. Regardless, this game getting something like a 3 from GameSpot is stupid. It’s much better than that.
15 hours in and I can say this game deserves at least a 7/10
Easily in top 5 games of the year for me so far.
I've levelled a character to 40, was quite fun experience but I have zero desire to grind and get more descendants
It's so repetitive, maybe if there were other goals to actually grind for I might be more inclined to keep playing but collecting more descendants isn't it
@AndyKazama Honestly, if you have the time, patience and continue to enjoy the game, there isn't that much of a f2p paywall. The main progression point in the end/postgame is Crystallisation Catalysts to 'prestige' your gear/characters to gradually optimise them and the occasional one-time Energy Activator for your favourites. You get a pretty reliable flow of the former so long as you're cracking open lootblobs for other blueprints, and the latter show up... well, very occasionally, but often enough. I imagine there are people who have bought them instead to dodge the farming/crafting times, but with those price tags I could only see it being the whales who already spent $100 on an early character unlock.
Edit: Had to remind myself how much those two items cost to skip via the store and... yeah, at £5 and £20 each, if and when you get to that point, the patient ingame route works just fine. xD
@crossbit I can see descendant limit becoming something I might spend money on. Say I do get to 10, I don't see myself wanting to get rid of characters having spent so much time on them.
By that point though, the game will deserve some pennies off me.
It's so admirable that the devs are continuing to support this terrible, terrible 3/10 game! They should get 'Developer of the Year' for this! Haha!
Seriously though, Nexon are actually listening to the players with these updates and implementing changes that the players ask for, changes that make the grind less grindy and the game more fun!
@AndyKazama exactly how I see it, I've just started the endgame loop and I'm slowly creeping on that descendent limit... but 'm also a good halfway through the pre-season battle pass and depending on how much it is it might end up being worth getting that to get all the shinies AND the premium currency to use on expanding my descendant stable.
@Mintie I do wish they'd look at the pricing of some of the heroes. Say I did 100 hours in the end and wanted to support the devs by purchasing Ult Bunny. Not for the £79.99 they want.
So she is basically Warframe's Octavia
@AndyKazama There is that, true! I'm nearing that point myself, sitting at 8/10 with a few Descendants that I'm close to completing. I was expecting the slots to be much more expensive honestly, at 80 pence a pop they're very reasonable.
(For my part to support them I've bought a few of the lower end cosmetics for my favourite characters, but yeah, as neat as some of the Ultimates and their shop outfits look there's just no way I could justify throwing that much money at them in one go.)
@pharos_haven Every character is basically just a re-skin of a Warframe one at this point, with abilities take from another. Viessa is Frost, Bunny is Volt, Ajax is Rhino etc Ultimates are just Primes.
@Mortal The best advice I can give to anybody is, don’t take game reviewers seriously. Their views don’t reflect the average player.
For as long as I can remember, game critics have been out of touch. What the reviewer say seems to be wildly different from the average person’s view.
This game’s reception appears to be pretty well received by its player base.
@AndyKazama I'm hoping the Blueprint dismantle/shop they're implementing has a single weekly Ultimate chunk we can get with the currency from breaking down the spare blueprints because whilst I don't mind farming for stuff RNG can be a massive pain.
I've managed to get two of the Ultimate Bunny bits but the last two are refusing to cooperate.
@Mintie according to an unofficial account for TFD, they're implementing a system where if you fail to get an item after multiple attempts, the item you want should drop more frequently after a while.
So whether that means after a boss raid when using a blueprint, do you get Bunny parts guaranteed after failing to get it say 10 times? Idk. The post didn't clarify
@AndyKazama I'd read the same thing [not] sure how they'll do it or how many amorphous materials we'll have to open. I hope its a clear counter with a 'Pick the one you want' option at the end.
