If, like this author, you grew up on a diet of Harry Potter books and the Quidditch World Cup game on PS2, you’ll want to make sure you have Quidditch Champions’ fast-approaching 3rd September release date marked on your calendar. The game – which will be free to download with PS Plus Essential – has just snagged a gameplay trailer, and it looks good!
First and foremost, for those who treat online multiplayer like He Who Must Not Be Named, there’ll be a full single player campaign for those who want to play against the computer. This will see you competing to win the Quidditch World Cup across a variety of arenas, and you’ll be able to play as iconic characters like Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Draco Malfoy – or create your own.

Online multiplayer will of course also be available, but Warner Bros notes in the press release there are “no plans for microtransactions at this time”. Refreshing news for those of you who aren’t fans of live services, we suppose.
While the game will be free with PS Plus Essential, as mentioned, a Deluxe Edition will be available to pre-order both digitally and physically for $39.99/£34.99. This will include the following additional items:
- 2,000 Gold In-Game Currency
- Slytherin Stormrider Hurricane Broom Skin
- Slytherin Hogwarts Travel School Uniform
- Slytherin House Crest Emblem
- Hufflepuff Stormrider Sandstorm Broom Skin
- Hufflepuff Hogwarts Travel School Uniform
- Hufflepuff House Crest Emblem

- Ravenclaw House Crest Emblem
- Gryffindor Stormrider Firestorm Broom Skin
- Gryffindor Hogwarts Travel School Uniform

The press release summarises: “Featuring iconic wizarding world locations, characters, and references that fans will love, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions highlights the rush of flying across legendary arenas as either a Beater, Chaser, Keeper, or Seeker in a variety of modes. From backyard battles in the Weasley Burrow to high-stakes showdowns at the Quidditch World Cup, players will soar into legendary arenas playing as – or against – iconic characters such as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and many other quintessential characters.”
How many of you will be dusting off your brooms and seeking out this title when it launches in September?

In-game currency but no micro transactions. So that means you will not be able to buy in-game currency with real money?
I played it a bit during a closed alpha/beta test.
Controls are almost identical to rocket league, so it handles pretty well.
@IamJT That's correct. You just earn it in-game.
No interest in this game, but it was smart of Sony to get it for plus. After the success of Hogwarts legacy, I expect this game to do really good.might even be the biggest downloaded plus game of all time.
@Americansamurai1 I think the marketing will need to ramp up for it to become that big, but I imagine they're going to push it hard throughout August.
Hopefully the final game delivers.
When I heard of Quidditch being a separate game from Legacy I thought it was a cheap monetization move by Warner. And it is, but as a $40 budget title, this is looking like the most PS2 game I've seen in ages, and I mean that in the best of ways. This is the kind of stuff gaming has been missing, really.
Think my lady will be all over this..like a cheap suit.. don’t tell her I said that 🫣
Looks infinitely better than I imagined it would.
I'm wondering how it is balanced, as if you go after the golden snitch would it just ruin the online game for everyone else trying to score some points if the game just ended on that? And in that case, is the golden snitch actually attainable early, or is it just flying around out of reach until enough time passes or the score reaches a certain level? And the person after it would then just be wasting their time 😅

While the art style is a choice I curious to see how the controls actually handle, imo flying games that are competitive are always a little difficult.
@nessisonett Rowling sucks but she is a billionaire. Buying or boycotting the game or anything she does will have zero effect on her life. Of course it’s a personal choice and we all need to make a judgment call on what we stand for. I do think, however, people can buy and enjoy Harry Potter products without supporting Rowling. It is impossible to life an economically moral life unless you are rich and can carefully source everything you buy.
@get2sammyb It’s sad how refreshing that is. I have fond memories of unlocking characters and skins through gameplay without a battle pass or micro transactions. I think there is actually a lot of room for developers to sell more copies by adopting that practice again.
@nessisonett I wholeheartedly agree
@IamJT The problem is that her influence is directly tied to the enduring popularity of Harry Potter. Those Fantastic Beasts movies were widely hated. Her Strike novels have proven that she’s a terrible writer. The only thing she has is goodwill from previous successes, which was naturally fading with the books and movies aging, hence the push to re-adapt them for HBO. This and Hogwarts Legacy are doing more to keep her relevant than anything she’s done herself in over 10 years, which then just keeps her in the news.
To extinguish a flame, you don’t provide it with more fuel. You smother it and let it naturally fade. Refusing to engage with media directly tied to her is the best way to curb the hateful influence she’s having on British politics. Just today, the courts have confirmed that trans-affirming care is being withdrawn from teens going through puberty because her platform was used to boost this rhetoric to the point that both main parties have anti-trans health secretaries. It goes beyond things such as historic racism or Antisemitism by authors like Roald Dahl, as he’s dead. She is still alive and so any endorsement of her work is a tangible benefit to her own influence. Considering she’s having a negative impact on my own community, morality dictates that I at least attempt to make people think twice about supporting such a person.
@nessisonett Well thought out and perfectly understandable stance. I have taken similar stances in my own life, I havent voted since the first Obama election because he immediately bombed civilians using drones like a week after taking office, so I appreciate your conviction.
Harry Potter is just an important cultural touchstone for an entire generation, and it is a real shame the author is using her status to do what she does. I just think its hard to tell people to forego something they love and grew up loving because the creator is such a scumbag. The world is too complicated, you can't buy an electronic device without supporting the destruction of the environment, unfair labor practices (arguably slavery or indentured servitude in some situations), or the corporations that make them and use their money and influence to control government policy around the world. Buying actually sustainable groceries is near impossible for most people on a budget. When it comes to how people spend their money on entertainment, their means of escape from an ever complicated world, I find it hard to pass judgment.
Regardless, best of luck to you and your community, things are also getting worse than they are better on this side of the world depending on what state you live in.
Edit: Also, not sure why your comment was removed. This was a good faith discussion with zero animosity displayed on either side.
@IamJT we’ve messaged the author privately as to why we had to remove the comment in question.
It's funny that this may be the biggest game released in any service of this year lol.
The game looks great and it makes it even better that it isn't a service. Harry Potter and the chamber full of money.
@IamJT UK defamation laws mean that you can hear someone quack like a duck but can't use said quack to draw conclusions about the person being a duck unless you fight an expensive legal battle to prove that said person is a duck. It goes both ways, JK's pals have lost cases where they called gay men groomers with zero evidence and that's what it was designed for. It is what it is, I'd rather comments get deleted rather than water down what I have to say. For legal purposes, I can say that JK Rowling associates with people such as Posie Parker who have spoken at rallies attended by neo-Nazi groups, and any inference based on that fact are up to the reader to decide.
@nessisonett Interesting, in the U.S. she would be a public figure and would have to prove by a preponderance of the evidence that you were lying, knew you were lying, and acted with actual malice (knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard for the truth). It’s an exceptionally high burden.
@get2sammyb
Nice touch with that PTSD on He Who Must Not be Named haha
Or should I say also ... she who must not be named . . .
I'm hopeless hreheeh :'P
'Warner Bros notes in the press release there are “no plans for microtransactions at this time”'
"at this time" doing a lot of work there WB...
Regarding some of the above comments: It's so unfortunate that, like with others here, everything Harry Potter leaves this nasty taste in my mouth now that JKR has become a militant culture warrior squarely fixated on making already marginalised people's lives as difficult as possible and libelling them as insidious misogynists.
Not that I feel like I'm missing out hugely - I've largely outgrown the likes of Star Wars, HP and other film franchises I adored as a child, and there are far better games and films to play and watch today anyway. But while I was happy to skip the fine but average looking Hogwarts Legacy and use that time to play God of War or The Witcher 3, curiosities like this do oddly grab my attention from time to time, and the PS2 factor that NEStalgia mentioned is specifically what's drawing me with to this.
@AK4tywill It is strange how powerful nostalgia is. I read all the Harry Potter books as a kid and was into them, but as I read more and grew up I’ve found far better worlds to explore in fiction. I don’t find this universe as interesting anymore, which is great since the author is horrific, but it triggers such a deep response to people so many years after. I’d say it’s a time and place thing but I don’t know. That said, I always thought quidditch was a poorly thought out sport so I’m mostly curious to see how this game makes it a proper sport. Will definitely read a review or two.
