If you’ve been itching for an arcade basketball game akin to the classics like NBA Street, then The Run: Got Next may be worth adding to your wishlist. The game – developed by Play by Play, a studio founded by former Electronic Arts producer Scott Probst – promises to “shake up the sports game landscape with something new”. A bold ambition.
Ultimately, this is a 3vs3 hooper that “celebrates the attitude, style, and skills of streetball culture”. An announcement blog elaborates: “Our focus from day one started with gameplay and nailing our style and flavour of basketball, built with players at the centre [and] gameplay that’s easy to pick up and play and fun to master.”
As the trailer teases, you’ll be picking up to three larger-than-life ‘ballers and taking them to courts all around the world. The various courts will inspire unique gameplay, with some favouring different playstyles to others. You’ll also be able to visit an in-game shop between matches, where you can customise your team with fresh sneakers, sponsors, and more.
The announcement continues: “This takes place in a world our team has handcrafted with a uniquely stylised look and feel. Everything from our characters to some of the most legendary and unexpected courts around the world: hand-painted textures, cel-shaded characters, hand-keyed animations, and the list goes on and on. This is a fully curated sports experience.”
There’s certainly promise here, and it’s true that games like this seldom exist anymore. The developer says it’s been quietly working on this title for two years already, and it’s targeting a 2025 release date on PS5. Hopefully we get treated to some raw gameplay footage soon, because while we like the art style here, the moment-to-moment action is the most important part.

nah NFL street would’ve been better but i get it.
Yo I remember NBA streets. Hope this’ll be fun.
NBA Street and NBA Street Vol. 2 were really good and had lasting fun memories playing them with friends. I never played the other 2 games they released in the series but they seemed to be in positive standings. I'll keep an eye on this and see how the gameplay looks because if I could relive those old days with a modern game, that would be pretty nice.
NBA Street is super fun. Would be up for this!
I absolutely loved NBA Street Vol. 2 back in the day. Will keep my eye on this one.
EA BIG made some great pure arcade games nobody makes these days. Really miss them.
Now, somebody get me a remake of SSX3 and maybe Def Jam: Fight for New York.
PS+ Premium really needs to bring the NBA Streets games back
I'm a NBA street super fan and got all of them in my shelf so this definitely has my attention! I wished they showed some gameplay though. I know it wouldn't happen because of licensing but getting NBA street 1-3 PS2 ports on PS5 would be amazing.
Hopefully that's the game actual art style.
I'm all for arcade-style basketball - but "streetball culture” makes me balk a bit. I'm more a fan of NBA Jam than NBA Street. I'm more interested in gameplay than characters.
I really hope they do a demo. I might end up loving this, or hating it - and I'll probably avoid it until it's cheap if I don't get a chance to try it out to be sure which way it goes for me.
Gives me the vibes like it's trying to hard...I dunno.
Gimme all the sports games!
Rather have NBA street
@Cutmastavictory same. Its defenately trying to be cool and edgy for sure. Im not sold on it just yet.
I played the hell out of Street V3 so this is going on the radar. Character designs are goofy but that's coming from someone who regularly played as the Beastie Boys and the Mario Bros., so not much room to talk lol
