Darksiders is not dead! During a livestream earlier today, THQ Nordic confirmed that it’s actively developing a new entry in the well-liked action series. While it stopped short of sharing any specific details, it simply said: “Be prepared to ride again.”
Texas-based studio Gunfire Games is leading development on the project, following its work on Darksiders 3. The company was started by David Adams who also founded Vigil Games, which was the team that created the original Darksiders game.

We’re going to hypothesise based on the teaser trailer that this will stick more closely to the blueprint established by the original game, and we’re honestly hopeful it’ll be more like The Legend of Zelda, as the first title was a brilliant alternative to the classic franchise.
Considering the direction Nintendo has taken its series with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, we actually reckon there’s space in the market for a more traditional Zelda game, with well-designed dungeons and tons of puzzles.
Presumably this is still a little way off, but it’s exciting to know the franchise isn’t dead, and will be making a comeback in the not-too distant future.

This kinda peaked with the first game, it was a straightforward Zelda clone with no gimmicks, fun story, very gow-like design and all in all a jolly ol time. Second game, I dropped it twice. Both ps3 and ps4. Too exhausting, too much traversal, Diablo and WoW influence wasn’t my thing, felt like a solo MMO at times and generally less interesting plot. My friends recommended me not to try the third game and I’m not eager to prove them wrong. Hope the 4th game is good although this can just be another “lords of the fallen” case where we get Something with prettier graphics, but same ol uninspired or boring gameplay.
Edit: I wrote this before reading the article, I’ve read it now and happy to see it echoes my “Zelda” sentiments.
Played Darksiders 2 and 3, and enjoyed both. Must play D1 and Genesis yet. It's a cool universe, and I really enjoy the gameplay and aesthetics!!
If it'll be like the first 2 games, then I'm all for it !
Genesis was meh, and 3rd was a bit more ok, but still didn't live up to the initial 2 games, which I love!
I'd rather have them return to that, to what made the franchise great in the first place: full on action-adventure game, serious story, and very well peppered with exploration, secrets and puzzles.
3 was terrible. I could barely get a few hours into it it was so janky. Hopefully they return to the styles of 1 or 2.
Plus, they can take some of the great stuff they learned/developed for the Remnant series and apply it to Darksiders and maybe freshen up some gameplay areas a bit.
Amazing series! Each game has its + and -
The first one, however, is my absolute favorite!
Best news I’ve heard today! Love the this series.
I loved all the ganes, including the 3rd. Apart from Okami, Darksiders 2 for me is the best Zelda clone ever made. I am looking forward to this one.
Loved the first game. Was down on 2nd game a bit. Really liked the third game. Very underrated
Legend of Zelda.darksiders was also similar to god of war.anyway a new entry is fine.word up son
@Yousef- I haven’t played any (yet) but have heard very good things about Darksiders 2.
I like the fact that each entry is a different variation on the action game… 1 character action, 2 a Zelda style adventure, 3 a souls-like and Genesis a Diablo-esque action rpg. Way to diversify!
@colonelkilgore and then the fourth one will be a cooking game.
@Yousef- I’m hoping (without any evidence to back this up) it’ll be an attempt at something similar to the post 2018 God of War games, like the original was an old-school God of War-clone… ish 😉
@colonelkilgore I don’t actually it’ll go that route. Might borrow soulslike elements (which I wouldn’t be against), if it’s an old-gow clone, that’d be a breath of fresh air. But if a new-gow clone wouldn’t be an unwelcome direction either. In fact, I’d love to see what creative Liberties they’d take there.
I finished the 1st game and i quite like it. Played the 2nd game and not yet finish it, but i think it's a pretty solid game or a bit better than the 1st game. Not yet played the 3rd and Genesis but heard good things about Genesis.
I'm curious how they gonna make the 5th game if all four horsemen are playable.
@Yousef- I read the article before reading your post, which was what I was going to write. Well I don't actually have any friends, but I read enough online to know not to play the 3rd game. And the 4th game I may have tried a demo or trial for 15 minutes and knew it wasn't for me.
Going back to the first game's style could be fun, but it will probably be a rogue lite souls like live service game.
That's good news, I like the series. As for ranking them I would say DS1>DS3>DS2. Haven't played the top-down one.
@Yousef- if you’re really looking for new games influenced by post 2018 God of War - you could do a far sight worse than trying Clash - Artifacts of Chaos.
First game was fantastic storyline, voice acting characters but the 2nd one I really couldn't get into. The clunky menu system the king traversal grind to get to places it was very boring and I couldn't even be bothered to finished it. The 3rd I wasn't interested from the start it was announced
@rjejr I may have needed to clarify I was referring to a new “third person action game” when I said “4th”. I haven’t had any experience with Genesis as I’ve rarely delved into Diablo-likes, not that I’m necessarily against them or anything. Just probably not my cup of tea.
@colonelkilgore I see, thanks. Always open to recs (of any kind), especially of games I never heard of. I’ll have a look. Umbasa.
Cool! I loved the first one.
I liked all three. Sign me up for more.
Yasssss!! I really liked the third person Darksiders games.
@colonelkilgore @Yousef
Yes, that is a good recommendation for PlayStation. Also, War Gods Zeus of Child on Xbox.
@The_Wailing_Doom bwahahaha… funniest thing I’ve heard all day 🤣
That's nice. I liked Darksiders 3. Though the performance left something to be desired.
Let's hope this one is finally the continuation of the story of the first game.
All 4 riders in the same game.
Gunfire is on fire after Remnant 2 last year so let them ***** cook baby!!!
Makes me very happy to hear this.
Great news! I loved the second game, the exploration, story, atmosphere. The third game I didn’t enjoy as much, they dropped the more exploration-leaning gameplay, hopefully that’ll make a return
I have really liked all these games. One of the only series where I think the story and world building is very strong, unlike most other forgettable games around these days. This 4th one is crying out for some 4 player PvE type drop in action with each person taking on a horseman.
Love this Franchise
Hope they go back to the old combat of hack and slash, the turn based combat from the third game was terrible
Played all of them. Enjoyed all of them. Really looking forward to a new entry.
Big fan of the games, with Darksiders 3 being super-underrated. It's the most written-off franchise game since Dark Souls 2, with the internet at large judging it without having played it themselves. If your friends told you not to play it, you need new friends
Hopefully they can bring back some of the magic of the first game, best in the series. It started so well, with such a strong premise, playing as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Series fans deserve a good conclusion.
Tried to play the first one but laughed out loud when I got to the guy that sounds like Zorak from The Brak Show and couldn't continue.
Hopefully it gets back to its roots and is like the first game as it was the most enjoyable overall. The second game lost me a bit with the loot system as it only really added busywork to the game, they also went hard on the rule of three which got obnoxious later on. The third game was just meh overall, the weapon choices should have made for great rapid gameplay but the move to slower combat just didn't work for me at all.
Am I excited sure. But if Gunfire is making it aka Chronos, Darksiders 3, Remanent I'm not buying it. They do good ideas in their games no doubt but the soulslike format is not for me the combat/the basic puzzles of 3 was so pathetic, grinding in areas was annoying, I got to the Lust boss (3rd boss) with the awkward attacks and get to about half health and I hate it. That and the metroidvania design is worse. Prime I can understand enough but no map or just some parts being annoying to exit out of for the corridors no thanks. I am ok with a Strife game then just Genesis having both, we need to see what happens and having both his guns with War/Death was cool but seeing his side would be nice. I forget what the state of him was.
We have enough soulslikes, make something else seriously. Ah the DS3 review, what a load of garbage that was.
Souls games have the personality and tone but the combat is so action adventure/light and heavy but so boring and lacking other than wow I attack, I dodge or defend, but it's so slow and so annoying I can't hold my attention with it and don't care to roleplay with them at all and the damage/stamina and difficulty. I get the horror/dark worlds but even then eh pass.
I like each entry is different. 2 didn't do the best RPG design as some leveling gating was annoying (beating the optional level 16 recommend dungeon too on a lower level you bet I played very carefully the same as my brief highest difficulty attempt to see how I'd go) or some regions were confusing.
But the 1st two were great at the items/puzzles/interconnected world design of older Zeldas with the combat system and tone of God of War.
2 had fair RPG ideas and world and some missions or the arena/dungeons were fair, but some dungeons/goal items of get these 3 things weren't the best. But besides being rushed and well THQ dying yeah they did fair with what they had to work with for the time and the DLCs as well.
Genesis I found to be fun as while isometric to me the combat/platforming (something Dialbo games don't have) or the use of War/Strife was cool. It felt like a Darksiders but isometric and I don't mind that. There wasn't much gear sure but collecting and doing puzzles and fair combat with better than Killzone Liberation shooting with Strife and fair melee with War and abilities for each worked out well.
I've wanted a new Darksiders game and one for current gen would be great but if it's going to break the new genre each time thing or be by Gunfire and it's got soulslike design in it. It's a massive pass sorry THQ but Darksiders and Wreckfest matter and otherwise I don't care for much else of their nicher games I see in bargain bins much either.
Even Gothic is probably going to be fair, it had it's charm prior and 'tries to be more advanced' but I mean any AI comments I just ignore, no one has bothered with NPC lives that much, nor to many games even push ambitious systems anymore. SO I'll wait until I see it first.
Same with better shooter animations or a hive mind learning or losing attacks from other enemies or the player so more than a Dark Link concept. Whether a goo or a robot or whatever. I want THAT AI to be tested in a game. Won't happen though.
I have a mild interest in this series. Nothing about it truly blows me away, but nothing is "bad". It's a good rainy day kind of game I guess. Pretty much checks all the boxes in the "decent" area.
I played the first and second though, that's it so far. I'm still annoyed with myself for not knowing the second game had an online trophy that was long discontinued. Oh well.
Also, I wonder who is going to be the spotlight here? My understanding is they did War, Death, and Fury in the three main titles, and Strife got a spinoff game? So maybe finally a group game? Idk.
