During Sony's State of Play showcase, BioWare showed off some dragon-busting Dragon Age: The Veilguard gameplay, with a mage character going up against multiple evil beasties. In a second trailer, the build used is dissected, and we can glean a little more about how power progression will work in the upcoming, expansive RPG.
The Rook in question is a level 35 mage, focusing on fire damage to exploit a specific dragon's elemental weakness. Wielding staff, dagger, and elemental orb, we see just one way the player character can stack the deck against enemies and overcome fearsome odds. Careful use of abilities will allow the player to exploit synergies and inflict status effects and maximum damage. You can check it out for yourself below:

Am I the only one who thought the cutscenes actually looked worse than the actual gameplay graphics?
Looking forward to this game.
@dskatter First cutscene there is less detail then in the first gameplay section, but the lighting is better. Second cutscene is significantly better graphics then the gameplay. Why they have some cutscenes looking significantly worse then others is absurd.
I’m more interested than I was after the initial trailer. Still, I’ll wait for reviews
Honestly this looked unpolished.
I really had my hopes up after the previews last week, as everyone seemed to be really surprised and optimistic coming away from those preview events. so it's crazy to see this battle where targeting wasn't working all of the time, animations/hit boxes were super janky and it just looked like overall messy for a single enemy boss battle.
Hopefully this just didn't translate well but it's just bizarre that just YouTube play through capture looked better than a hand selected by the devs piece of content for a major platform showcase. The cut scenes looked like a decade old mmo levels of quality as well.
I’ll take a demo. I haven’t liked much of what I’ve seen with this one, but I’d give it a chance.
Previews have been crazy positive but I'm much more excited for Avowed.
@30fps60fps Modern Bioware, sadly.
Still not 100%, but I'll probably end up playing it eventually.
Nothing about this seems... Good? IDK it's very generic, doesn't really feel like DA, the combat feels.... Messy? Neither RPG strategic nor action game precise, the cutscenes seem heavy yet not amazing, and something about the art style makes me want to look away all the time. IDK what I didn't like about the art but I just don't.
Maybe it'll surprise but something about the game feels just plain wrong. Which is weird because usually EA single player games are actually very good, just attached to terrible policies and rarely existing at all
As much as Dragon Age is 1 of my fave series, im still unsure on this one. What is the point in having a massive skill tree but you can essentially only equip 3 skills + an ultimate skill at any 1 time? As a mage you want at least double that minimum. I know they were saying you need to be more tactical and set skills for whatever enemies you are coming up against...but how the hell do you know what weaknesses enemies you are to come up against without actually fighting them first?!
Secondly they have totally butchered the Qunari, they used to look so cool but in this they look like Megamind with a tumor! Its like Bioware are still trying to figure out their art style etc....which shouldnt be a case 4 games in!
I'm looking forward to this but keeping my expectations relatively low. It really doesn't look or feel current gen, which is wild.
I can't wait for this one; I'm hoping it will actually get really good reviews - just to finally shut the negative nancy's up. If it does get bad reviews, well... that's the end of Bioware then. Oh well.
I'm getting it day 1 regardless of the reviews, which I mostly ignore nowadays... thankfully.
I'll definitely skip this. Character design is pretty ugly, close to Immortals of Avenum, and I actually didn't know who was villain here.
This was easily the lowest point in the SoP. The character visuals look terrrible. All the faces look like they are wearing stretched out skin masks. The dragon also looked off in the trailer, It might be the style the are going for but it looked like the dragon was a noticably lower res than the back ground which made it stand out in all the wrong ways.
Also I am concerned that they seem to be focussing on mage combat in a lot of these previews which makes me think that the other classes will be much less engaging.
My most anticipated game this year. I've waited 10 long years for this one!
Can't wait
Something about the combat seemed off in that trailer. I think it's that the dragon doesn't react to being hit (other than the particle effects of the fire spawning in). It's been a while since I've played Monster Hunter, but I could have sworn that the monsters' body parts bob and flinch in reaction to being struck, and it's a shame that Bioware couldn't copy that. Without it the combat looks like it lacks impact. I was watching this thinking "did that attack even hit?"
After the disappointment of DD2, this is the only next gen game I'm looking forward to,
If this turns out to be turkey, think I'll just flog the Tub o' Lard and go back to my trusty PS4 Pro and will wait and see what the PS6 actually offers, not buying based on assumptions of new games again.
Was it announced you can't switch characters? I can't recall, but it certainly will be less engaging if you can't and I can see that here. Everything looks mid, but this will be the last in the series, right? I may finish it if so, as I was vaguely interested in seeing what Elfy man got upto later on.
I preordered it today. The companion characters are saints row level ugly tho
