You could be forgiven for forgetting there’s a Watch Dogs movie on the way, but shooting has concluded so please look forward to it. The flick – which is being created in collaboration with New Regency – has been on the agenda for over a decade, but only entered full production in July. It’ll star Australian actress Sophie Wilde in a currently unannounced role, alongside Billy the Kid’s Tom Blyth.
Obviously there’s still a long road until release, with post-production likely to take at least another year, but we suspect this will see the light of day at some point. What makes this a little unusual is that the Watch Dogs franchise appears to be on hiatus for the time being, after latest entry Watch Dogs Legion largely disappointed, both critically and commercially.
It’ll be interesting to see whether director Mathieu Turi can inject some life back into the series, and avoid another Borderlands-style flop. To be fair, there is reason to be positive: video game adaptations aren’t quite the disasters they used to be, and franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Last of Us have proven the medium can still work in a live action format.

Oh right. Ok then. I have no feelings on this 😂
I kinda like Watch Dogs. I want it to be good. I thought Watch Dogs 2 was pretty great, and I sort of enjoyed Legion in spite of its faults.
I do think there's a good game itching to get out of this franchise.
I can't imagine the movie will be very good, but let's wait for the first trailer.
I enjoyed Watchdogs and Watchdogs 2 but WHAT!?!? I seem to remember Ubisoft deciding that they wouldn’t be making anymore games in the series a while back (which I was disappointed about) but they’re making a movie! Never go full Ubisoft 🤪
@get2sammyb I saw a video of Watch Dogs 10 years on running with loads of mods and it looks right up my alley, if I could get it running! I played the second one and absolutely loved it but the first’s setting really appeals to me.
This actually could probably translate to a big budget flick pretty easily. Make it like a modern Enemy of the State. Make it about someone being pulled into the underground world of government surveillance and morally gray activist hackers. Could definitely see it as that sorta mid-late 90s/early 2000s action thriller sorta vibe.
Don't tie it directly to the game stories at all. The franchise isn't big enough anymore for that. Just make it independently set within that world and it could probably find a decent audience.
I mean, it can’t be a worse movie than Borderlands, right?
…right?
Never even knew filming began or that it existed.
A movie based on a dead franchise
Wait what?! My head's spinning. Who greenlit this? I can already imagine the movie breaking it's back to seam hip with current youth culture and failing miserably, but maybe I'm wrong.
Didn't even know there was a movie ...no doubt it will be awful
I would have rather they used the time and resources to make a good Watch Dogs game honestly. I really enjoyed 2 but I was super disappointed by Legion.
Watchdogs (the original one) could make a good movie.
The story in 2 was terrible and while I enjoyed Legion I don't think it would translate good to movie format.
Maybe it's an all-original story though?
I could be interested.
Another specular game to movie endeavour. The Mario movie was great, uncharted, MK and sonic ok but more often than not they are duds. I can’t imagine this will be good, but could be wrong I’ll have to wait and see. Can’t be as bad as the Minecraft one coming, it looks horrendous lol
Prince of persia movie is good, I like that movie, assassin creed movie is very very bad, I don’t have much hope for this watchdog movie.
Haven't seen a still imagine and already know is sewer garbage, it might make a little more than Borderlands though 👍
If they kind of follow the template of Mr. Robot I could see this working. I hope so. I love the Watch Dogs games.
@wiiware So another person who I agree w/ me that POP was good and AC was bad. Glad I'm not the only one comparing the 2.
@MFTWrecks I didn't know they were making a Watch Dogs movie and I never played the games but I can see an Enemy of the State type movie working, that was pretty good. My mind went straight to "Mr. Robot", which was great early on before it got way weird. I'm expecting to watch this someday comparing it non-stop to Mr. Robot. If it's lucky.
@jrt87 That AC movie was really bad. And it was basically a straight-to-video remake of "PoP: Sands of Time" which I really enjoyed, so you can make a decent movie from a game. Probably much easier to make a bad movie though. 😂
Why would you make a movie out of an unpopular game? Does anybody want this?????
I have zero faith this will turn out well
I had no idea this was even a thing. I enjoyed the first two games, legion not so much but had no idea about a film.
Utterly joyless, horrid games. Can't imagine a big screen adaptation would be any better.
I enjoyed PoP movie. I mean, Gemma Arterton is an eye candy and Jake Gyllenhaal + Ben Kingsley did a nice job as the protags & villain.
I also kinda enjoyed AssCreed movie but because i'm a fans of Michael Fassbender works.
So, maybe i'll watch this is if it based on the second game which i really enjoyed.
I imagine this will suffer from the same problem as the games; it's fundamentally boring to watch other people use computers.
Live action movie adaptations of video games do not work. Make it animated or into a show.
Nobody gives a flying *****.
Well, uhm, I am happy for them. I think.
Didn't like watch dogs in the end.
I actually found the first game to have the potential to be a great franchise, I liked the more gritty dark take.
Then they went all saints row by legion.
But then again that's the same with saints row.
I loved the first game and the second for me was a perfect mix of rag to riches, buy up businesses and take over parts of the city bit by bit.
But instead of keeping that tone they went all in on the comedic aspect and I felt like that was the worst part.
Honestly hope the movie takes a more mature tone and goes with the first game back drop rather than the comedic over the top later games.
@MFTWrecks Agree, there is potential in the material in that the techy thriller setup is generic enough for someone to do something with. I expect its not too hard to do better than what Ubisoft can write.
Well the base story is good, but will it work on screen in live action? I’m one who actually thoroughly enjoyed Borderlands, so this may work, but it’s now in the stages of really being made, with all the CGI and effects being made and then the editing…
If its the games story I'll look forward to it and give it a chance, if its to fit a woke narrative then no interest.
Until I see different, I'll assume the 2nd option.
@rjejr Yup, I watched pop movie with my friends on theatre back then, it's a fun, good movie 😃
