Wonder if it reached 20 million sold yet
Didn’t need reminding, one of my favourite games ever… absolutely stellar in every aspect!
I haven't played it yet (though I have very strong feelings about its predecessor, mostly how inferior it is to the series' origins in everything but writing), but I still got the sense that the general reception was a bit lukewarm. No one was saying it was bad, certainly, but it seemed even the Norse of War fans considered it no significant step up from that entry. Or even, in a decent amount of cases, not even matching that first over-the-shoulder foray.
@RoomWithaMoose personally, I consider it the best game I've ever played. The story is fantastic and the gameplay simply unmatched. I greatly appreciated how different themes it tackles compared to the previous one.
A classic? It came out 2 years ago and it was, like, 60% exactly the same as the first game.
@B_Lindz It's a sequel, what were you expecting, a different combat system or something?
The visuals, music, writing and characters of God of War 2018 were absolutely stellar, which is why it was such a shame I didn't really like actually playing it and also why I won't be playing Ragnarok. To be honest, I preferred the gameplay of the PS2, PS3 and PSP games.
Curious to see how well it runs on Steam Deck or Rog Ally. GoW 2018 ran really well on Steam Deck
Classic? Way to early for that.
I would call the first three games classics though.
I still want a return, to that old-school GOW style and gameplay...
Bought it on PS5, only played part way through, but will be rebuying on PC now. Once it hits a good sale, that is, and FFXVI repurchase probably comes first, once it dips in price which I think will be faster than Ragnarok.
I'm not actually a huge fan of "new God of War" but it's still worth playing through even if I do believe they're overrated by a mile.
I didn’t really like Ragnarok that much. The gameplay was excellent, but the story felt disjointed and Atreus was supremely annoying.
GoW 2018 is classic and a masterpiece. Ragnarok failed to reproduce the experience, mostly because of the bad pacing and lack of consistent scenario. The epic moments that defined GoW 2018 were absent, or just falling flat because poorly prepared.
@RoomWithaMoose to me it was a step up even in combat variety.
I kind of agree with others on here. I really enjoyed Ragnorak, but I still consider 2018 the better game and hold it in my top 5 of all time. Loved it
@mariomaster96 Ragnarök was also on PS4, so I have no doubt that this will run fine on Steam Deck or Rog Ally
So Ragnarok hits PC before it appears on PS Extra. Okay…
@mariomaster96 can’t speak for ragnarock, but i remember the original ran flawlessly.
175gig preload. Good, freaking lord.
One of the best games i have ever played.
Unlike some, i was hoping for more Atreus towards the end of the game or maybe the ability to swap once they were back together, as i really liked the change of pace but he didnt get enough fighting sections.
The production values on this game were incredible.
Ragnarok was mid…arguably smallest leap in the series
@RoomWithaMoose Yeah it's definitely the weaker of the two Norse games (and I'm with you in the original games being better camp too).
The pacing is incredibly poor, the puzzles are repetitive and unfun, companions treating players like they've never played a videogame before, the incessant dialogue, Ironwood. The fact that the stages look open but you're still forced to find the developer's linear path through them.
I finished the game, but it's like a 6/10 for me. Heck, I enjoyed Ascension more than it.
@Vovander Because one has customers paying full price for the game, and the other is access to about 500 games for the cost of a coffee per week.
You want quality Sony (or Nintendo) games, you pay for them. What Microsoft and GamePass have done to the industry really is gross.
@B_Lindz "60% exactly the same as the first game"
Some people doesn't understand how sequel works 🙄 . That's like saying RE 2 isn't a classic just because it still largely played the same like RE 1. Or Tomb Raider 2, Yakuza 2, Metroid 2, Shenmue 2, or Batman Arkham City isn't a classic because they still pretty much played the same as the first game.
I don't think this game or the 2018 are any kind of classic. Gosh, they are not even better than GOW 2.
@AverageGamer Same could be said about HFW, that game also was on PS4 but seemingly doesnt run very well on SD whereas HZD seemingly does
@MrPeanutbutterz in that case, why have subscription services, and by the same token, discounts at all? Pony up for quality!
I don’t expect day one release, but almost 2 years later, it’s about time for “dvd stage” (to use movies as analogy), no?
For sub services, number of users is critical, and what better way to increase that than putting a tentpole 1st party title on.
@Vovander Because they're an additional revenue stream for the platform holder, and an alternative way of accessing games for players. Again, you're paying pocket change to rent from a library of hundreds of games. Sony have no doubt looked at how GamePass has devalued the Xbox brand and decided they don't want a repeat.
Why have discounts? Because that's how retail works. Not everyone wants to buy at full price. The publisher is better off eventually selling at a reduced cost to people who otherwise won't spend money on that particular product.
Your DVD analogy doesn't work. Yes, you want the cheap and cheerful rental for a few bucks, but you've also ignored the fact that the DVD phase of any film's shelf life involves paying full price for a DVD. And you're traditionally paying similar if not more than it cost for a cinema ticket.
Sony experimented by putting Horizon Forbidden West on the service, and it stopped sales of the game dead in their tracks. Being the for-profit business that they are, obviously don't want a repeat of that with one of their most popular games.
TL;DR - if you want access to GoW Ragnarok, then pay the admission price like the rest of us who wanted to play it. Otherwise, tough luck.

@mariomaster96 I never had issues getting HFW to run well on my steam deck. You just have to tinker with the settings a bit.
