Polyphony Digital has always pushed the boundaries of what’s possible with PlayStation hardware, and so it’s no surprise to see it go all-in with PS5 Pro. While Gran Turismo 7’s main improvements for Sony’s supercharged hardware will include the implementation of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and raytracing during gameplay, the Japanese dev is also experimenting with an 8K, 60fps mode.
“Players will be able to see the precisely modelled cars and tracks in unprecedented detail and clarity, with a breath-taking sense of presence,” main programmer Shuichi Takano explained on the PS Blog. “Thanks to these cutting-edge developments, Gran Turismo 7 will be able to provide more exciting and visually stunning race experiences than was previously possible.”
Obviously, you’ll need to own a television capable of outputting images in 8K, which aren’t cheap – but it’s fascinating to see the veteran first-party experiment with this. Do you have an 8K panel in your setup? Will you be racing the Nürburgring in glorious 8K clarity? Inspect every pixel in the comments section below.

8K tvs here cost more than a gaming PC 😂
8k, for those of you with 120 inch TVs from the future.
My PS5 box has big 8K letters on it. That was clearly a f**king lie.
This would be the modern equivalent to GT4 having a 1080i mode on PS2.
I've literally just bought a brand new 4K OLED TV, so there is no chance I bother with an 8K TV for a long time, not least because what would i even watch on it? Though it's still pretty cool they'll have it as an option for the very few who do and for sometime way off in the future when 8K TV's make any sense.
I am sure that the two people who have 8k TV, a PS5 Pro & play GT7 will appreciate this.
Waste of dev time for the majority of folks though but I guess it looks good on PR news blogs.
@nessisonett I mean whose fault is it, isn't sonys
@Andy22385 So it’s not Sony’s fault that they used 8K as a marketing tool on their own console packaging, which was then removed later as they go back on their own marketing? And then develop a patch for their mid-gen refresh that adds in the feature advertised for the original console?
@Savage_Joe Technically yes, but it has yet to be enabled. There's not been a lot of movement on the adoption of 8K TVs, and thus 8K content yet. If they ever do enable it for the original console, it'll probably only be for video content atp.
@Andy22385 Let me guess he's complaining about the 8K on the box. He has me blocked even though I've never interacted with him at all.
at that point , forget 8k and just up the frames to 120fps because imma be honest - even 60fps isn’t as satisfying or enough anymore . 120+ is actually the new 60 & has been for a while now
For the vast majority of screen sizes, at the typical distance ranges most people sit away from a large TV, the difference between 4K and 8K is virtually unnoticeable to the human eye.
Of course if you have remortgaged the house to get a a 100+ inch 8K monster or you sit abnormally close to the screen or if you have mutant-gene super-sight then you might see a difference.
But for the vast majority 8K just isn't worth it. Regardless it's always cool to see tech boundaries pushed.
I had an Samsung 8K TV...until it died at the end of last year. I wouldn't buy one again. For Polyphony, while useless to 99.98% of GT7 owners, it's always cool to see the limits of tech pushed.
Cool. But what time can we preorder the PS5Pro in Europe?
I bet all 3 of the 8k TV owners in the world will be absolutely thrilled with this news.
If one of them also happens to be daft enough to waste their money on a PS5 Pro as well, they might just be able to see what all the fuss is about
Neat..I guess. For the 10 people in the world who have 8K TVs, this will be wonderful.
Though, this is probably more for the people who have 8K monitors - which, while still expensive - are much more reasonable in price.
Though, if someone is spending that kind of money on a computer monitor, they aren't exactly a console gamer.
@eagletrippin Your TV died? ahh jeez that's awful. Just out of curiosity how much was it if you don't mind me asking? I've seen 8K TVs for as much as 5K or even more here.
They need to make the game a little more "grimy" if they're going to make the graphics better. The game looks fantastic but it's also very sterile and bright. At least make a setting to turn things a bit more dull and lifelike.
Would it super sample down to 4k screen?
Anyone else remember when the PS5 was revealed they were talking about 120fps?
Can it experiment with divorcing all the unlocks from an in-game store instead so I can finally buy it?
I'm sure there's people out there that has them. Why Im not quite sure as of yet. But I can grab one for £800 so they are more readily available here. Still, we are many many years away seeing 8K content. Christ, 4K still isn't even fully adopted.
Wow, that P(i)SSR technology must be amazing
well, that is a fool's errand. sony (today) pressuring its own studio to support its TVs (15 years into the future) is idiotic. to be frank, i don't think 8k will ever be a thing with widespread adoption... other than TVs larger than 80" (which less than 3% of the population has the space for... then, finding someone with the space, money and desire to get one is slim pickings). even 4k adoption is stuggling due to diminishing returns in noticeable fidelity to the average person. stop wasting money sony! seems to be the only thing you are good at of late.
8K is a waste of time, money, and resources. The human eye can barely see the difference between 1080p and 4K.
@nomither6 If you want 4K 120FPS all the time, you will have to spend several thousand on a very high end gaming PC. A console will not do it. I doubt next gen will either.
This sounds like a marketing PR stunt and nothing more, a waste of time and money and resources.
@nessisonett well yes tbh. They just advertise the capabilites of the console. Isn't really their fault if literally every developer hasn't taken advantage of it. If someone made an 8K mode then it'd have run.
@RubyCarbuncle exactly hahaha
Not caring about the difference and not seeing the difference are two completely different things. I can’t speak for 8k but the jump between 1080p and 4k is massive to my eyes.
@Frmknst like I know 8K is pointless but no different between 1080 and 8K? Come on 😂😂 1080p to 1440p is massively noticeable never mind that.
This is pure tech experiment and their coding abilities. Which iss great and if the succeed even in a small matter will be interesting whe we hear again soneone saying that 1080p is max the hardware can handle.
@Loamy I have a 1440 OLED and I'm actually interested tbh because it was always the issue 1440p dividing into 4K. But it divides perfectly into 8K
@MasterChiefWiggum You can keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better about not upgrading your display.
But as a (primarily) PC gamer, the differences are pretty obvious. I pretty frequently switch resolutions to weigh the image quality vs. performance dilemma. And if you can't see the difference between 1080p and 4k, you may need to make an appointment to a optometrist. Heck, even 1440p I can see a difference in that it is slightly softer image. Once you get into the 1728p and 1800p's then it starts getting indistinguishable. (Mind you, I'm speaking only on non-upscaled images.)
@Frmknst if you can't tell the difference between 1080 and even 4k, never mind 8k, then it sounds like a you problem...
@RubyCarbuncle 3600 USD at the time (2019). This was after my OLED got burn in and I vowed to never buy the tech again. Ironically, I got an OLED in 2022 and it has been fantastic — the tech has truly matured and is far more reliable now. Samsung, on the other hand — I will never buy another one...
What an absolutely pointless waste of time and energy.
8K screens are pretty cheap now. They're just pointless
@S1ayeR74 right. but i’m just saying that if consoles are trying to hit 8k , why not just opt out for upping the frame rate instead . i have a high end pc & even i don’t use 8k , actually, who does??
@DonkeyFantasy oh , that’s good to know.
@jrt87 thanks man. I saw that post, want to order one tomorrow but probably have no chance getting one. I just want the regular Pro btw.
@DonkeyFantasy Not at 4K doesn't.
@nomither6 I said 4K? Who said anything about 8K? I doubt your PC will even handle 8K, certainly not at 120FPS. 8K is nothing by a 100% pure marketing PR stunt! Can you buy an 8K monitor even? And their are hardly an TV's with it and the ones that exist are usually huge.
I agree up the frame rates, give a stable
60 to 120FPS, all anyone wants. But they have to do their PR bit I guess.
@S1ayeR74 you can buy them tbf but the price is stupid. The TVs are pretty cheap now though (well cheap for 8K) and a lot smaller than they used to be. 8K is stupid though
@nomither6 This!
If ps5 pro came with 120fps, it would be whole other story.
8K is wonderful to demonstrate to some of the Digital Foundry lot as some kind of next level game changer, but not remotely what I’m thinking of when I consider the future potential of a gaming system.
That aside, to shoehorn a question in here to anyone who may see it, do we know yet if Sony will allow me to purchase two PS5 Pro consoles in one transaction here in the UK?
No particular rush, just would like them ideally prior to Christmas but if not oh well, but just can’t for the life of me remember if when I purchased mine and my partners OG PS5 they were limited to one per person and/or household.
Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent. I would ask Sony customer support, but it’s a Live Chat bot until you moan enough for a real person who then proceeds to know less about Sony electronics than a random bloke in a pub.
@TheElectroFunky I'm wondering this too because I'm wondering about the times tomorrow. For instance if the regular Pro releases before the 30th edition one and I've bought a regular pro...can I still buy the 30th anniversary one? Because they may only let one pro per account
@Andy22385 Exactly, I’ve asked my missus and she claims she just wants the standard Pro, not the 30th Anniversary version, so then I’m fine with two standard Pro units or one that is the Anniversary etc.
I know it’s a first world issue to many, but I just want ideally the same warranty/guarantee and same purchase etc. Plus I don’t want to give myself a Pro and then have to tell my missus she has to wait months or vice versa.
I guess we cross our fingers and wait! I don’t mind if I’m purchasing on December the 20th, just so long as it’s together.
@DonkeyFantasy I'm betting it won't as much as you think and VRR doesn't mean it will either. Name me one game that does 120FPS at 4K native, not upscaled, on PS5.
@TheElectroFunky there is the retail run after this in a couple of weeks too. I just don't wanna not buy the Pro tomorrow when it comes available because the 30th hasn't dropped yet 🫠
@S1ayeR74 tbf there is some that do native 4K/120 but they're just weak graphical games. I honestly believe forbidden West will do PSSR 4k/120 though given the frame rate on the regular ps5
Oh wow so let’s squeeze more pixels out of this PS4 game yay! How about they develop a non cross generational full GT8 for the PS5. Then focus on making a good targeted 4k experience on the PS5. Nothing special new hardware running older software.
Can they also fix the awful reprojection in GT on PSVR 2?
256x240 pixels with a SuperFX chip for incredible 3D rendering is the way to go. But I guess people who can justify buying a PS5 pro can also afford an 8K TV. I'm still not sure 4K makes a big difference after 9 years with my 55" tv
@nessisonett Technically not a lie but functionally yes a lie 🤣
@IamJT It’s not like anybody would really use the 8K option when the console released but it was a clear indication of future-proofing that the PS4 lacked as they needed the Pro to integrate 4K! It’s the blatant misleading nature of it that rankles.
I would love to see this
Digital foundry tried cyberpunk 2077 at 8k with a 4090 and it was not pretty
4k HDR isn't even the normal yea people have 4k TVs but for most content coming in you have to pay extra to get that HDR look and better 4k.
Netflix pricing is a joke, Sky also charge stupid for it Disney+ has it in the £12 plan but now contains ads I think Amazon as the same system. Unless your a 4k blu ray collector and have a 4k player then your good for that. But 8k no one is buying a 8k TV they cost far too much and when they come down to 4k prices which is 2-3 years away they will have 12k TVs out
A 4090 GPU struggled to do 8k DF did it and it looked like crap I think Linus did it also but I can't remember think he endorsed it
@nessisonett I kept the box and that 8K logo feels kind of like a collectors badge now 😂
4K is already a waste of resources many times, consoles and even PCs are not quite there yet and they are talking about 8K..
DELUSIONAL!
