Here’s your first look at Minecraft’s weird live action movie, which is a guaranteed money spinner from where we’re sitting. At just 90 seconds long, there’s very little in the way of story setup – but we’re not exactly expecting an Oscar winning script from this adaptation. It appears to be some kind of isekai, where Jason Momoa and a gang of four kids ended up in a voxel-based otherworld.
To be fair, outside of the live action stuff, the CG looks very high budget. We also get a glimpse of Jack Black playing Steve – with his name being one of the punch lines.
The blurb reads: “Four misfits – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
“To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative – the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
It looks garish, silly, and strange – but those are arguably all the qualities we’d expect from a Minecraft movie. Expect this to make bank when it launches from 4th April in cinemas.

- Nah, this isn't for me at all I'm afraid

Just seen the trailer on Nintendo life. Not for my demographic but I can see the little kids enjoying this and that’s who it’s aimed at.
Could be quite good fun as long as there’s some laughs for the parents
Getting borderlands vibes, that's a good thing right?
Also can Jack Black do anything else apart from this type of role!
It looks very silly, which depending how that lands could be a massive hit or a miss. Honestly don't know which.
I could see my friends and I watching it for a good laugh
But it does look pretty terrible
High quality movie like this paired with the PS5 native release of Minecraft is my personal highlight of this year
My little one watched it the trailer and says he wants it so I'm guessing its drawing the audience it's intending to
And they cancelled the Batgirl series or was it movie I forgot. This looks godawful I'm certain this is thought up by some suits.
This looks dreadful and I actually quite like Minecraft
Wouldn't it be funnier if the actors were transported into like, the actual Minecraft game? Everything in this just looks too fuzzy and rounded. More CGI slop I guess!
I still cannot be convinced this movie is even real. Too much of a fever dream.
@Czar_Khastik I will become interested in Minecraft if it gets renamed to Minecord
Looks like a fan-made, live-action YouTube video from 10 years ago...
Whiiich, I guess, the target audience for this is going to love.
It looks dire, frankly, but it has one advantage over Borderlands that will make it a success regardless.
Its target audience is children, who won't care about a cliche story and terrible script, because Jack Black as Steve will do a funny sometimes, and maybe even dance. And there will be at least one Creeper that explodes.
...Actually, yep, a lot of what made Borderlands terrible for the PG-13 market will make this perfect for one of Minecraft-obsessed children. Still, spare a thought for their parents.
Not seen the clip as at “work” but this sounds like Jumanji ( the newer ones, not the classic with Robin Williams)
@Yousef- Minecordians assemble!
I like Jack Black but he could have shaved for the role. Don't recall Steve having a black a white beard XD
Saying that this aint for me. A money maker for sure but cant see critics liking this
Like I said on Nintendo Life this looks about as stupid as stupid can be so far. The plot sounds ridiculous too.
@Danloaded Oh, it's definitely getting panned by critics. But I don't think it really matters.
"I am Steve" made me laugh I must admit.
This looks like The Lego Movie and Jumaji had a baby but they rejected it and threw it in a dumpster fire.
Looks better than I expected when announced...but have no interest ...kids might
Can’t be any worse than the Borderlands movie
I'll watch it with the kids, maybe.
You all owe Minecraft Story Mode an apology.
Still better than anything Disney is doing, that isn't Deadpool.
@riceNpea Alright, I'll be the devil's advocate.
Inside Out 2 was pretty good, people kinda slept on Guardians 3, Alien and Planet of the Apes were received very well, and Searchlight Pictures are releasing bangers as per usual.
I know Disney had a pretty bad 2023, but people are getting way too comfortable with acting like they've gone downhill forever and ever. If any, I'd argue that Warner Bros Discovery is worse. At least Disney doesn't tax cut half of their film and television output.
Oh, and guess who distributed this film!
Yeah...no.😑
At the very least this looks like it could preform relatively better compared to the Borderlands movie, not that that is saying much.😩
I'm admittedly a little bit curious though on who will play Alex (assuming she appears).
It’ll make money and kids will probably like it but f**k me, it looks rubbish. There’s a lot of great kids movies out there but this does not look like one of them.
@Oram77 I get what you're saying but he's just doing what will make the zeros. He's been an actor for over 30 years, he isn't the absolute best but he has better roles, for sure. He was already pretty aggressively typecasted but it was probably around the time of Kung Fu Panda that he realized kids stuff were his much more successful movies.
Doesn't look minecraft enough.
@HotGoomba that fair. However, the recent sackings, cost cutting and stock price drops suggest Disney has had more failures than successes in the last few years, so overall they have gone backwards.
Forget this trash WHERE'S THE CONCORD MOVIE!!!??? 😜
This looks beyond awful and about as low effort as they could have imagined. Jack Black is completely overplayed now. I asked my 10 year old (who loves Minecraft) and his response was ‘No, just no. Why is Steve an old guy with a beard? Why couldn’t they have made it animated like Mario’
And yet I expect it will make millions.
@yohn777 Yeah I get what you are saying, I'm really surprised that Kevin hart isn't apart of this movie lol
@riceNpea Fair, and agreed. Disney is still garbage. But my hate is mostly directed towards Warner at the moment.
@HotGoomba I've got some reserved for them too for abandoning Henry. Dumbest decision ever made.
I can't help but find it funny that long before Jack Black was confirmed for the movie, he already made a Minecraft reference through Tenacious D's music video "Video Games" from last year (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNJtPFXUnm4), and even that "Minecraft model" of him in said music video (0:53) looks like it would have fit more in the movie then Black just appearing as himself. XD
My wife and I just watched the trailer. She's already writing the script for the "Honest Trailer", and she's doing a pretty good job. 😂
Looks like Jumanji. Or "Journey to the ... whatever". Still looks better than "Harold and the Purple Crayon". 🙄
Looks like a kids movie. Kids need more movies apparently. I saw Deadpool and Wolverine w/ my wife on Monday, about 10 people in the theater, including a 2-3 year old girl and 4-5 year old boy. Boy seemed into it. Girl just kept asking when it was going to end. (They were sitting directly in front of us, we should have moved.) Guy spent the whole movie on his phone, looked like he was gambling or something. At least he wasn't looking at porn. There were also a couple of kids about 10-12. So by all means, make some kid movies, b/c Deadpool and Wolverine ain't it. 🤬
Agree w/ the other comments that this looks nothing like Minecraft, looks more like Mario or Sonic. Minecraft has a look. A gawd awful "ahh my eyes" look. This isn't that. Like, if they just called it "Jumanji 3" would any of us say, "no that isn't Jumanji, it's Minecraft? 🤷♂️
We will watch it on streaming at some point, I need to know.
Incredibly stupid. Watch dumbed down idiotic acting with 99% green screen nonsense.
Just like Pokémon, Mario, etc. Investors don't even have to try when milking these major IPs because they know they will make a profit because of the mindless fanatics that make up those fan bases.
Garbage Man sounds oddly foreshadowing of what I believe will suffer a similar fate of Borderlands. There be garbage here, man.
@rjejr I remember seeing the South Park movie in theaters (yes, I am dating myself here) and people actually brought their kids. 🤦♂️
@Flaming_Kaiser think it's only you that wanted that bat girl travesty...
Wrong kind of silly and strange. And unfathomably ugly to look at.
@Loamy Jack Black is like a bad parody of Jack Black
I won't watch anything with supporters of gen_o_cide in it 🍉
@Keyblade-Dan or a documentary about how the Sony suits got all the hard working devs fired within a week of release after "8 years" of development!
Actors, IP relevance, how accurate to the game and it's open possibilities, who knows, who cares I assume people won't because it's Minecraft. They have this to milk the IP. The possibilities are there but who cares anyways. It's IP milking, that's why it exists and is the only reason it exists. Audiences are dumb, execs know it. What else is there.
Last few Minecraft updates sucked anyways. DnD wasn't my type of movie but I saw the appeal in it still. Seeing it again. Eh western animators & realism, the creativity is hit & miss some good some bad, eh acting direction/personality-less characters.
Even if vanilla offers enough material to work with, who cares to see it really? Same with how Ratchet 2016 made half a remade game, cut off the best levels and moments in the game of combat and story telling because WE CAN'T HAVE CONFLICT in a kids story, Insomniac your story telling wasn't movie quality but it was better than Rainmaker's trash writing when you went by whatever adult/kid audience 2000s movies & made your own interesting world. Not a safe but boring one by an animation studio trying to be too heavily inspired by Illumination.
They slapped together whatever they could, had a few gun cameos & whatever other ties for characters that make no difference being there at all, other games with deeper lore barely translate well of Halo, Assassin's Creed & more because the staff in the movie/tv show industry don't care even though a LOT of material is available. So why should I care here.
Minecraft has no story & that's what makes it good, we can make our own, it's a VIDEO GAME. So playing in it is fun. Imaginations go wild.
Same can happen in a movie sure but I also don't care. What I experience in the game & other players as well, will be more fun then this overly produced slop fest of a movie. Budget means nothing (it may look good, it may also be a Lego movie or some other generic story, boring! as if many others aren't copy pasted bland stories, Sonic movie for example it felt like a Paddington or Santa Claus, some boring family drama adults for the 'adults' compared to adult fans/kids that like the games/character, Sonic is there... getting back to his world. Wow what great writing. Maybe 2 & Knuckles are better but even still. Actors, characters, the bare minimum/milking. Audiences are simple emotionally/nostalgically.
Uncharted was just the 4th game mixed with parts of the 1st 3 and no Golden Abyss as well it's fine to skip it really. A good game but still not fussed it was skipped of relevance anyway of references or anything.
Got better things to do/see. I've got better to do with other games or modded Minecraft experiences then care about a movie for one of the biggest IPs to make more money from it. Snore.
An animated movie or a tv show anthology would be better. Not this. Actually anything not milking the IP would be better actually but they can't do that. Dungeons was eh, Legends tried but was just empty and badly approached what it was going for. Overlord/Pikmin/Army Corps of Hell and more do it better and fill in the space. Legends doesn't even know how to do that it's so bland and 'modern'.
Web series will be better then this because they already exist and use the game/it's artstyle and NPCs/enemies in many ways already.
Not a fan of Minecraft and the trailer doesn't show anything that looks funny or makes me wants to watch it. At least D&D: Honor Among Thieves looks interesting from the 1st trailer and i had a fun time with the movie.
But kids probably will love this movie.
It looks like a steaming pile of 💩 but it probably will be massive because people just have bad taste these days.
At least it isn't Disney making it but I suppose that wouldn't be bad because plenty of people are happy to see Disney be creatively bankrupt after all of the garbage they have produced over the years recently.
@KundaliniRising333 It’s gonna make a billion dollars regardless based on the target audience and IP recognition.
The only real question is whether Jack Black writes and performs a song. The Mario movie wasn’t great, but Peaches was a banger.
@Deljo Better then this it's really for kids.
@nessisonett Why do you think kids tend to like rubbish products?
