Sony's dropped some additional PS5 Pro details on the official PlayStation Blog, confirming that, just like the base PS5, the enhanced system will be capable of running PS4 games via backwards compatibility. That information isn't even remotely surprising, but the article does go on to claim that last-gen titles can benefit even more from the Pro's technical advancements.
'PS5 Pro Game Boost' is what Sony's calling it. "This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games," writes CEO Hideaki Nishino. "Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games."
So, basically, your PS4 games might enjoy better overall performance on the Pro, compared to what you were seeing on the standard PS5 — but it sounds like certain titles will actually boast enhanced visuals. We don't know the specifics of how this is going to work just yet, but it's an interesting line.
Are there any specific PS4 games that you hope will play better than ever on PS5 Pro? Start counting those pixels in the comments section below.

How does Bloodborne run? Still 30fps?
So something Xbox has introduced at the start of this generation and included with every series S and X now comes with a price tag of 700 dollar?
LOL
PS5 already does that. I thought it would be something like Xbox does even for their Xbox original games.
What is happening to Sony? They used to be so good on selling consoles, what happened? No competition, perhaps?
A “Pro Game Boost” is the closest we’re getting to Bloodborne 60fps
For 799€ it should be literally creating free sequels on it's own 😃
I love how everybody is laser focused on 699$, when there is a small European market of 450 million getting scalped..
Might be time to sell my Series S, which would cover even more of the cost of the Pro!
I’d buy it if it gave me access to and could play my PS3 digital library. Otherwise, hard no.
I really hope this console bombs, at least in the UK. That price is not acceptable and $700 is not £700. I guess we'll see.
I’m sure it can run games better and frankly it absolutely should do considering what it costs.
So much in fact Nintendo will now take all my money with switch 2. Thanks Sony!
Will Vampire Survivors be 3D?
Doesn’t the PS5 already do that? Like I know Sekiro runs at a nearly solid 60fps and that was without a next gen patch.
@Dodoo
Switch 2 for me also, we just need the announcement now.
If Push Square still does hardware reviews then I hope the pros section of this will just be the word “pro” with no elaboration.
PS5 Pro Boost
Bloodborne still stuck at 30
I think the choice to put 2TB of storage might be an expensive choice now tbf
Does this mean they are locking features that could be available to all behind the big price tag?
My biggest fear with the pro is that 60fps will be reserved exclusively for the PS5 Pro and we will be stuck at 30fps for the base model PS5.
Devs could get lazy, or Sony could tell them to do that out of greed.
@OldGamer999 I’m a Sony fanboy but I might fr switch to Team Nintendo. Time to put my Mario hat on
I keep saying it. The problem we have is not powerful enough consoles.
The problem is that all the games we get nowadays are technically inferior to even PS3 games like GTA IV and V or RDR1. Let alone RDR2.
Maybe release some proper "next gen" games first before you release the most unnecessary Pro version ever.
@danzoEX
Biggest Sony fan since PS1. I've had it with them. Garbage company. PS6 can kiss my butt
@Dodoo I'm all set with my PS5 and next year, I'm just waiting for Nintendo's Switch successor, especially since it's their games that could use more enhancements more than PS5 games.
Maybe it can force Driveclub to 60fps without breaking the physics
So the normal PS5 which is already miles better than PS4 can’t boost the games’ performance but the PS5 Pro can?
This is a scam.
Key word is “may”. Honestly I bought my PS5 as a PS4Pro that plays PS5 games so I am content. I think it plays PS4 games well as is.
I try to be neutral but this is just positive PR for Nintendo. Switch successor can be 400-maybe 500 at this point.
@IOI Many PS4 games did get a boost, but those were mostly first party or ones that didn't have locked framerates.
@TrickyDicky99 pro pro pro clarice
@Ryu_Niiyama $400-$500 is still relatively expensive for Nintendo who is consistently 2-3 generations behind in tech.
@IOI yup that's just nonsense
Wow. How insulting. £825 to play PS4. Could be an Xbox One reveal moment…
Cant wait for ps5 pro 👏👏☺️☺️
@riceNpea unfortunately no, not enough power for that , but it will run at 2664 fps
Na ta, Sony.
Just hope you don't have them on disc
@danzoEX good bye
Doesn't the Base PS5 already do this?
Looks good to me
As a subline to the article headline...
"...And so does the PS4. It's called GoldHEN. which doesn't cost £700."
@ButterySmooth30FPS It wasn’t a boost, those games were patched to take advantage of PS5.
Translation:
This conference or whatever was so apple it hurt. Dual Sense Pros will have glass backing, lol.
@IOI PS5 was able to brute-force 60 fps or lock the framerate in many games that didn't get official PS5 patches like Blue Reflection, Actraiser Renaissance, Disaster Report, and others.
https://www.backwards-compatible.com/search/?improved=1&
So a selling point is that it plays last gen games better, please tell me more how much ps5 is a waste money, really has been a slow gen, some bangers for sure, but ps6 will be here in about 3 years, I think I'll wait anyway the ps6 will play my ps5 games " better" 👍
@danzoEX
Nintendo do seems the only ones with a sort of sensible hat on at the moment.
Let’s see what price the Switch 2 comes in at first.
Could tell me it breeds animals and I wouldn’t pay that price for a console.
@OldGamer999 yeah here’s hoping their announcement is sooner rather than later!
PS5 was already the PS4 Pro 2.
So the PS5 Pro is really the PS4 Pro 3. 😂
Personally I am now very excited to see the Switch 2.
Would've liked to see them mention a handheld in development or something.
@GamerDad66 Not really. It makes some PS4 games have a bit more stable framerate, plus some games have that workaround that struggle to hit 60fps on PS5 can sometimes hit it perfectly playing the PS4 native version, but there aren't that many examples of this. That being said, I'm still not really sold on this Pro model. Not at that crazy price.
@McTwist I don't know why you're obsessed with this narrative that PS3 games are more graphically advanced than PS5 games, but you're just flat out wrong. It's okay to like PS3 games still but PS5 games look better than damn PS3 version RDR1 lol. Get a grip.
Nope still not interested.
@yohn777
Pretty graphics are nothing.
Every single one of these "next gen" AAA games have worde physics, worse gameplay, worse world building, worse NPC intelligence, worse NPC interaction, worse animations, worse world interaction, worse writing, worse everything BUT graphics than those two little PS3 games.
Funny how you said "narrative that PS3 games are more graphically advanced". You took the one single aspect modern games are better at while in every other aspect they're beat.
Idc about the PS3. The point is that it's 2 generations ago and we're going backwards. GTA IV had insane car, body and object physics and mechanics. To me it's still not beat and it's clear as day. I'm baffled anyone would even try to dispute this point. Crazy.
@Friendly Xbox introduced at the start of this generation? Didnt the PS4 Pro also have 'Game Boost'?
@Dodoo People seem to be sure the next Switch isnt going to be expensive as well
@LogicStrikesAgain not sure, just hoping…
@lacerz I'd buy this if it was 100% backwards compatible with all generations including physical discs, trophies be damned.
Dynasty warriors 9 can use some love
@LogicStrikesAgain no. Not for backwards compatible games. And not in the way Xbox did it with their all around performance boosts (auto hdr, improved fps). https://www.pocket-lint.com/xbox-backward-compatibility/
Meh. Sorry, they can stick this one.
I've bought every system since PS1, but I'll be skipping this. I don't feel it's at all necessary anyway, and many of my games are on disc. Plus, PS4 Pro made PS5 feel quite average, loading speed aside.
I'll wait for PS6, but if nothing else, this PS5 Pro has me very concerned about the price of the true next gen hardware.
No thanks not wasting any more money, already bored with the ps5 and it runs fine
@LogicStrikesAgain I was about to say, in news from the past, the PS4 Pro also has a boost mode.
PS5 Pro can run PS4 games better.
No it ***** can't. Unless you buy a external disc drive, cause the money grabbing ***** removed the drive and decided to charge £100 for it.
Now fair enough, it can run digital games better too. But there's still a large portion of games with physical libraries from PS4, who can happily play them on PS5, but will now find effectively a £350 price hike in order to have the mid gen update and not lose out.
It's also complete toss that it's £25 for the vertical stand. At £700 that should be free. It was at launch of original PS5, but again, money grabbing
@Friendly reading your previous comments, you have nothing nice to say about Sony. So why are you on a mostly playstation fan site? If you want Nintendo news maybe Nintendo life website is for you
@TrickyDicky99 or ps3 pro pro pro pro
If it plays dynasty warriors origins better than ps5, I'll buy it, just sell my ps5, hopefully it will only cost me half the price.
Don't need a ps5 if I have a pro
Question, will it make Crash Bandicoot Trilogy, CTR, Spyro Trilogy running on 60 FPS on PS5 Pro?
Because those games are locked on 30 FPS even on PS5 Fat machine.
You would have to play PlayStation 1 2 3 and 4 games for an £800 Price Tag
@OldGamer999 @Dodoo the Switch is a console with the guts of a 2015 phone that Nintendo still sells for more than an Xbox series S and almost the price of a PS5 Slim. Fair, the Pro is very expensive, but it's rather cute to think that you'll be getting your money's worth with Nintendo tech-wise. The Switch 2 will have ballpark PS4 performance and it will cost even more than the current Switch. A PS5 Pro made by Nintendo would cost upwards 1000 to keep up with their insane profit margin per unity. Again, the Pro is expensive, but you're paying for what you're getting and less than a discreet GPU.
Thing is by how much? For non-PS4 Pro games as well?
I think it's cool but by how much of frame rate or visuals with these GPU techniques?
That sounds pretty cool actually. Still can’t get a pro though. Definitely not right away at least.
@ButterySmooth30FPS but to a family with kids if they see 700 (probably 800 after the disk drive) they are gonna look at the price and pick up the cheaper system. If all one needs is good games to play then the cheaper option looks more attractive. Most consumers are not enthusiasts. And this sets the tone for the next Sony system. I would not be surprised at this point if the PS6 starts at 800. Consumers have been pulling back due to sticker shock.
@Ryu_Niiyama Right. Obviously, people have the power of choice. It just seems like the hysterics have been turned up to 11 here. I'm not too worried about PS6 pricing because it's a different sales model. PS5 Pro is the enthusiast console while PS6 will be for the mass-market.
@Staroceanblue i was a Sony fan. I have the PS1 up to PS4 and have played a lot of the big Sony games. I want them to return to what made them great in the PS2 and PS4 era.
Unfortunately they have lost their way, and especially this comment has made me angry, ‘obsessed with growth’:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2023/02/sony-shakes-up-corporate-ladder-by-promoting-exec-obsessed-with-growth
You see this obsession everywhere. Bizarre choices made by the higher ups: focus on live-service games, abandoned psvr2, abandoned vita, greed: increase of prices while they make a ton of profit, …
So yes, I’m salty, but for a reason. Corporate greed doesn’t benefit us players. As long as Sony behaves this way I won’t support them. But I’ll be one of the first to return if they return to be there for the players.
Which ps5 plays PS4 physical games better? I will use that one...
@Ryu_Niiyama not just families. Most people will see the cheaper one that also comes with a disc drive and a stand and buy it...
@TheTraditional as ***** as this announcement was. It was focused on one sole thing. An overpriced discless standless ps5 pro.
Why would they announce a second console?
@Medic_alert emulators have already got it running at 60 on pc. Sony/from software just can't be bothered.
Well if I can play RDR2, Bloodborne and Dragon Age Inquisition on 60FPS that would be great!
Unless it's going to enable 60FPS in 30FPS locked PS4 games then it's worthless.
There's a load of good PS4 games that hold up today and need a 60FPS PS5 patch
@Friendly I think people have rose tinted glasses on with the ps4 era, it was a disaster compared to the ps5 for the first 4 years
It was called the indiestation for a reason, it had no games, bloodborne saved the ps4 until they started bringing out better games later. Knack was awful, killzone and infamous were average, lbp4 was broken, driveclub was a wreck, the order 1886 was a flop. Xbox had the better games with halo, forza, gears, titanfall, killer instinct, heck even insomniac went with xbox over playstation and they made gran turismo 6 for ps3 only . With ps4 all you remember is uncharted 4, horizion, god of war, ghost of tsushima, spiderman, tlou 2 but all those came late to ps5.
Least, the ps5 launched with games god of war, ratchet and clank, spiderman Miles, horizion, returnal, demon souls etc even this year when Sony was suppose to have a poor year the top two games are ff7 rebirth and astrobot, even hell divers 2 did OK.
@dreadpirateflappy true. But I suspect Sony will cut production of the base models after a point. (I didn’t follow what happened after the 4 pro came out so I don’t know how long that took.) They want folks to buy the pro 5. I don’t think they want to pitch it as the luxury model.
