As we all know, YouTube dislikes are the be-all and end-all sign of something going horribly wrong. Up until now, Sony's managed to avoid dislike doom with its console reveals — but the newly announced PS5 Pro is bucking that trend. At the time of writing, the upgraded system — which is set to release in November — is already the most disliked console in PlayStation's YouTube history.
The official PS5 Pro reveal video currently sits at around 2.9 million views, with 90,000 likes and 141,000 dislikes — and the dislikes are only getting higher. Again, this is a bigger backlash than any previous PlayStation console has been subjected to.
For context, the standard PS5 announcement has a ridiculous 43 million views, but only 69,000 dislikes. Meanwhile, the PS4 Pro reveal — arguably a better point of comparison — has 1.6 million views and 5,600 dislikes.
A PS3 comparison would be interesting as well, given that the original model was also deemed to be incredibly expensive — the infamous "599 US dollars" — but that announcement doesn't exist in an official capacity on YouTube.
Now, obviously, YouTube like and dislike ratios aren't the ultimate indicator of something's worth, despite our dumb joke at the beginning of this article. But they can provide a degree of insight into certain trends — and when you start adding up all of the evidence, you certainly wouldn't be crazy for suggesting that the PS5 Pro has a huge uphill battle on its hands. Indeed, Sony's got to convince potential buyers of the system's eye-watering $700 / £700 price tag. Good luck!
Do you think Sony's completely missed the mark with the PS5 Pro's pricing? Or is this thing going to sell well regardless? Stop to consider those 90,000 likes in the comments section below.

We gotta pump those numbers up, Those are rookie numbers
I’m down! I can’t wait to get mine and play my PS5 games in there best possible form with all that next-gen looking ray traced goodness 🤩 plus the extra power is undoubtedly going to handy next year when you know what arrives (I’m wondering if that’s the point of the 2tb ssd) 😗
We'll see how bothered Sony are about that in the coming weeks. It could be that they're fine with that niche and it's a whatever to them
Seems like a lot of money and resources would have gone into R&D for this though so you'd expect them to care
They simply have to show a lot more than a weird 9 minute presentation that showed virtually nothing but a shocking price tag
Removed - trolling/baiting
@StylesT like the moronic pc master race that spend thousands building there rigs? Considering the phone in your pocket can do everything a pc can lol so who’s the moron then?? 😂
Maybe they are working on an adapter so you can get more power by hooking it up to a pc
This is the crap apple does. They have the tech and know how to build it to its full potential but no they hold back features so they can release a new version and just get more sales. They could have built the PS5 to where you dont have to decide between performance or graphics... but they did this crap of holding back the good stuff just to sell the pro. So shady dishonest greedy....
As annoying as the $700 price tag us, I know damn well I'll be buying one when the time is right. I need to play Ghost of Tsushima 2 at its very best.
This is very similar to what happened with Concord. Extreme negativity right at the start, there’s essentially no way back.
As much as I want to say this won’t sell well, the moment gta 6 releases at locked 30 fps on base ps5 and 60 on ps5 pro is when it will sell like hot cakes
I do not know in which reality the PlayStation marketing dudes are living, but not in mine obviously...
It's expensive sure, but still way cheaper than the equivalent PC. Also, this is not getting rid of the base model PS5, just as the PS4 Pro didn't replace the base model PS4. Of course, this is also a result of Xbox just getting curb stomped and Playstation essentially having no competition.
Again it's simple. Don't buy it if you don't want it. If you want to build a PC build it (Sony are already porting to it). The PS4 Pro never replaced the base PS4. The PS5 is still a great console unlike the PS4 which was already struggling at this time in its life cycle.
People need to be more zen. The invisible hand of capitalism will either reward or punish Sony and they'll accordingly double down or course correct.
Because it's a terrible deal.
Ffs they're selling the vertical stand separately for $30, and a disc drive separately.
And the damn thing does what exactly? Makes four year old games look a tiny bit better?
It's just dumb
With my 6 YouTube accounts I added 3 likes and 3 dislikes to keep it perfectly balanced.
@Mikey856 You know what they say, a fool and his money are easily parted.
I must be the only person who can't see a difference when playing PS5 games on fidelity, performance or balanced.
I watched the reveal video showing comparisons, but couldn't see a difference. Is it just my age or am I missing something obvious?
@InfidelFrigidstraigh no, it makes graphics modes run at 60fps instead of 30. Pretty big jump in power
Gamers: we want 4k@60fps for all games!
Sony: here's a console that finally does 4k@60fps
Gamers: >
@InfidelFrigidstraigh not even 4 year old, a " selling point" was ps4 games will look great 🤣🤣🤣🤣 so 7 or 8 years old will look great,
I'll get one when they bundle in flop psvr2 with ps5 pro, for about the same price ps5 pro is gonna sell for now, that will be a bargain!!
But people will try to convince you that playing your ps4 games at 60 fps is amazing
@Pinkman probably because a youtube livestream is going to be heavily compressed, loads of detail lost. I could still clearly see the difference though
those dislikes mean nothing if it sells out
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Removed - trolling/baiting
There's a wider problem that Sony are beginning to lose people's trust.
They've got arrogant, like Sony always gets when it doesn't have enough competition. They need a wake up call to get back on the consumer wavelength
I'm still trying to see the appreciable difference between the two consoles tbh.
"But look at those slightly more defined leaves!! WOOOOO!!!"
@Anthony_Daniels well said. I mean, it's something completely optional. I most likely won't be getting one, because I can't afford it. Simple as that.
Yikes…That’s what happens when you price a console so gosh darn high no one wants to buy it and can’t afford it. Sad that after all the build-up and rumors it disappointed everyone in the end.
@ShogunRok
I think the biggest issue is the appearance. An all powerful $700 system and relatively no new games to show it off. What did Sony show? TLoU2 remastered, Spider-man 2, Ratchet & Clank, GT7, Forbidden West…I think the most recent game was Hogwarts Legacy which released 19 months ago.
It just compounds with a somewhat negative trending for PlayStation right now.
And that’s without the alleged removal of Concord from people’s console. Delist the game. Make it unplayable. But removing it from people’s consoles completely? That’s kind of scary.
@naruball
Is it really that simple? If such an expensive console is going to sell really well.. won't it mean that the PS6 will be around the same price, if not more? Alot of people won't be able to afford it.. Gaming will be considered for the elite and that's just something I can't justify, no matter what. However, if Sony releases a more affordable PS6 at the time with less ''impressive'' specs, then I'm OK with it; I just don't want to splurge that much money on a new console - and I know ALOT of people don't want to do that either. The same thing here with the PS5 - I don't mind the Pro THAT much (Even though it's blatantly obvious Sony's being a greedy little beaver here), but if it co-exists with the regular model, then I don't mind it that much. However, if they pull out all the older models and force people to buy the Pro... yeah, then we're going to have a problem
You could spend 3k on a new PC and monitor setup just to go on Reddit and moan about something else as well if you wanted to.
It’ll sell regardless, so they know what they are doing with the price tag. Its not meant to be for everyday gamers.
@Mikey856 That’s a poor argument, yes you can spend twice as much building a PC than a PS5 Pro but there’s no comparison between all the things you can do with a PC instead of a console, but just gaming-wise you get access to multiple storefronts and waaaaay more and cheaper games, much better performance than any console with true DLSS, not having to pay at least $80 yearly for online, backwards compatibility isn’t locked with remasters and remakes, upgradability as down the road you can replace your CPU, GPU or whatever you want with a better one, and you’re not getting milked buying accessories that should be included in the box.
I’ve always been a console guy, have all 3 of them because despite all the great things I said I still don’t have a PC as I just prefer to play on consoles, but if next-generation consoles are around $1000 as the PS5 Pro already is I’m definitely not sticking around as Microsoft is fumbling their way out the console market, allowing Sony to be as abusive as they want.
@IOI how are Sony being abusive? Games are same price? Console is same price as their rival? They have released various peripherals that there rivals haven’t?
Whilst i will very probably buy a Pro at launch (providing i can get hold of one), i did think the presentation was very poor - Mark Cerny clearly needed 30mins to go through the proper specs / details, not a 9min top line.
Man! do I wish Sony didn't announce the PS5 Pro... but only because the amount of whinging online is truly nauseating.
Yes it's too expensive for me, I won't be buying it, but so is a Ferrari, that doesn't mean I go online and whinge about the price of high end cars. If its not for you, accept that and move on.
Having thought about this overnight, had the price been say £650 - 700 with drive and stand I might have considered it, especially if they announce No Man’s Sky PS5 Pro patch …
Would be interesting to see a costed BOM for this build, just to see how it stacks up.
Videogame graphics have reached a point where I'm satisfied and am not bothered paying extra to make it slightly better.
That said, if Sony removes performance mode completely, and locks me into playing at 30 FPS on PS5 Amateur... I still won't go Professional, but will get very mad at them
@Maubari Not really. Only enthusiasts/some hardcore gamers will buy a ps5pro. There is no way it'll do as well as the current model. Sony can't possibly charge that much for their main console. They know that with or without a serious competitor, they can't lose the casuals. And there is no way casuals will spend that much for a ps6 or a ps5pro and abandon the base model.
I'm genuinely interested in seeing what happens with the Pro. It obviously won't appeal to all of the players, but definitely will to some. Even though I'm priced out of it I'm not outraged at it either.
@Waitinonpsvr2 I agree, just a pure cash grab. I won't upgrade my PS5 until the 6 Pro followed by 7 Pro and so on. Just stupid to release 2 consoles a Gen. The price doesn't concern me, but not a vast upgrade in my opinion
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Are you seriously asking this?
You want me to stop or do I need to continue?
And before you try to excuse it with “yes but X publisher also did this” just compare Sony’s own decisions throughout the PS4 generation to what they’re currently doing, just look back at the PS4 Pro reveal, they slashed the price down to introduce the better console at the previous price, whereas now they’ve increased the standard console price 2 years after launch and now announced an almost twice as expensive “Pro” version, you really can’t see how Sony became abusive?
I'm not sure why so many people are mad, it's not something most of us would have considered regardless of the price. They have a demographic for it, and that demographic is unafraid of the price.
@themightyant interesting point, but feels unrealistic comparison. I think the disappointment comes, or at least in my case, that I believed this was aimed at me. I have a decent chunk of disposable income, certainly over spend on my gaming hobby, and was planning on getting this day 1. But the £700 price point, along with no disc drive feels well out of my price range out of principal, so isn't aimed at me. We say its for the enthusiasts, which I thought I was one seeing I have had nearly all consoles made including recently PS4, PS4 pro, PS5, PSVR, PSVR2, Switch, Series S and Series X - but I won't be getting one so I assume people turn their disappointment into anger online.
I guess my bigger concern is if the PS6 ends up costing more I'm going to have an even bigger decision to make
Edit: Going back to your original point I never planned to ever buy a Ferrari, even though I could possibly just about afford one (although it would end my marriage!)
Some people act like they are forced to buy it. It's just an extra option to play games, you still get to play the same games either way.
@IOI so you are just ignoring the fact that inflation is a thing. Ok then. Or that everything in the world is totally different.
But Sony should keep everything the same?
if it was JUST Sony doing this I’d agree 100% but it’s everything.
@LifeGirl it's more about having the better performance at the already high fidelity we get
Don't get all the comments say oh but a PC is more expensive. Yes a PC is more expensive but it does a lot more than just play games.
@Pinkman Yes and no. Some people are better able to see frame rates than others - like anything biological, we all exist somewhere on a bell-curve. (Personally, I can see the frames on standard 24fps films, and it's really distracting.)
In the clips Cerney showed yesterday, try watching on your TV, pause, and look at the two images side by side. If you can't see a difference, then maybe its your TV and you'd get no benefit from a Pro without upgrading your TV too.
Plus these improvements are really incremental at this point. A few more blades of grass here, distant objects rendering a few-in-game-metres further out there. I generally don't notice much other than egregious pop-in when I play games on performance mode (where it's available).
@jrt87 CNET have stated they games they've tested are running 4k@60fps, GT7 even running at 8k (for whoever wants that), and Sony have been asking devs to hit 4k@60fps on the pro. Sony have stated it as their goal. As for "all games", ultimately if the developer chooses to release unoptimised games, that's on them. Everything will still have to target 30fps on PS5 regardless, and PSSR will fill in gaps in resolution if devs don't hit 4k. It's not like the pro is replacing the base PS5 anyway, where people are still choosing 60fps modes and so the pressure is on devs to make that happen
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Lmao you really can’t accept a single criticism to a beloved brand?
Sony is the only one releasing a €800 console with no disc-drive, the only ones increasing the price of the controllers, the only ones increasing 30% their subscription service, the only ones remaking a game for the third time, the only ones selling an overpriced disc drive and many accessories even a freaking stand that should be in the box.
But whatever, keep excusing them for free, I’m sure PS6 will all be cheaper if you keep defending their abusive prices.
Boy yall are bleeding these PS5 Pro articles dry.
@IOI I agree with many of your points, but you might want to look up the word 'abusive' before throwing it around so casually. Nothing Sony have done could be called abusive in the correct sense of the word.
@Mustoe I’m sorry… it has the exact same CPU? One that’s at the very least 4-5 years old by this point? That’s hilarious.
@themightyant Literal definition: “Abuse is the improper usage or treatment of a person or thing, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit”.
Applied to Sony:
Abuse is the improper usage or treatment of Sony’s market leadership and brand loyalty, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit by setting prices however high they want to increase their profit margins.
Want me to use another term or is it clear enough?
Pricing aside, Cerny himself says that developers will need to update their games to make the most of PS5 Pro. He also said that 75% of users choose performance mode. He said both things trying to sell the Pro, but in my opinion both statements reveal that it's not worth it, because:
1) Not many games will have an optimised Pro mode.
2) Most console gamers don't care about visual fidelity as much as a £$700 upgrade (€800 in EU?), as long as performance is good.
3) It has the same CPU, so users won't get double the frame rate as stated above by some users. GTA running at 30fps on PS5 and 60fps on PS5 Pro is impossible.
4) You're stuck with Sony's digital store.
Moreover, since it lacks a disc drive, the most enthusiastic PS fans that have lots of PS4 discs, since he also discussed the benefits of playing PS4 games, and PS5 discs that they won't be able to use, unless they also get a peripheral. So if you have a PS4 or a regular PS5, you probably need a separate disc drive on top of the new console.
Last but not least, Microsoft and Sony still need to make the most of Series X and PS5, so a pro model that is £$250 more expensive (the comparison should be between the digital PS5 and PS5 Pro unless you add the price of the disc drive) is pointless.
@IOI im not excusing anything. I’ve stated several times across several threads it’s expensive. I gain nothing and lose nothing by them having the pro.
But beyond that the ‘abuse’ term needs to be levelled at literally every company out there. Because nothing is coming down.
@IOI That's more than a stretch of the use of the word. As for Sony's profit margins they have been in single figures for the last 8 quarters, so raising prices is a sensible business practice to prevent them making a loss in future as everything gets more expensive, which i'm sure you would agree would not be clever business.
I get it no one likes a price hike, but to call Sony ABUSIVE for doing so is just an inaccurate bending of the facts. Cost of everything is rising, Sony/PlayStation (or Xbox and others) aren't immune to that.
love to see it! Keep that same energy that consumers had when the original ps3 was (rightfully) $500-$600 on release. don’t get biased now, this console ain’t worth the price.
@Mikey856
Are you really that clueless?
Good luck with using your phone, when mixing music in the studio, and doing editing/color correction etc, in videos.
There is so much more use of a PC, than a phone, you fool.
For the whales.
Well, I’m getting it and selling mine. Ordered the disc drive
Good. I hope people do vote with their wallets and dont buy this overpriced console
I don’t get the hate. Yeah $700 is too expensive for a lot of people, including me. And I wanted one. But I’m just not going to get it. I already have a PS5.
If this was the ONLY console available (they decided to discontinue the PS5) then I understand. But it’s a premium product. Just don’t buy it, there is a cheaper option that has been available and still will be.
@themightyant Ok, then which term would you use to describe Sony’s current decisions toward customers?
And Sony’s abysmal profit margins are respectfully not our fault in the slightest, it’s due to their failed live service strategy spending billions in Bungie, Firewalk, Concord and all that, plus the out of control budgets such as Spider-Man 2 which had no business costing more than 300 million dollars, they should make big changes to their budget strategies but customers are not responsible for this and shouldn’t be the one who pay for Sony’s own failures.
@IOI it’s not a poor argument at all, it’s sound! If you complain about having to spend 700 on something to play games on while proceeding to spend 1000’s on something to play games on then you haven’t got a leg to stand on frankly. Also my phone can do anything there pc can do why buy a pc? Oh yes to play video games at there best form, just like I will be next year when I purchase GTAVI for my PS5 PRO … winner winner
@Steel76 I’ll bet my left leg there is an app for that… ya fool 🤣🤣🤣.
@StonyKL I understand that disappointment. I felt the same, I thought PS5 Pro was going to be targeted at me too, an enthusiast with disposable income. But as you said, "it wasn't for me" and when I knew that I was no longer too bothered. Life's too short to be annoyed about such things for long.
Though like you I am cross platform and have a Switch, Series X and Steam Deck. I suspect if I was ONLY into PlayStation, and didn't spend all that money on other devices I would probably drop £700 much more easily. As it is I will save that money to rebuild my rig and there will be Switch 2 next year. Both are much more sensible purchases.
Thanks for the reminder to add to the dislike counter on YouTube for this video /s
@Mustoe phones are now literally mini computers mate. Keep up 👍
£825 to play a noughties toilet humour game in GTA6 at maybe 60fps? I’m good.
@Mikey856 You didn’t read all the benefits you’d get into switching to PC, and again, knowing all this I still haven’t switched cause I like my consoles.
However statements such as “my phone can do anything there pc can do why buy a pc?” is not even worth a serious response. Go back to school.
@Nexozi i dont get it either. PC has a reason to be expensive, consoles dont. they're literally budget half-baked versions of PC's at an affordable price and gutted features.
@IOI At worst you might call it anti-consumer, but that isn't really accurate either because most platforms holders and publishers are also raising their prices. It's not just Sony. While we may not like it as consumers the fact is the cost of making games and hardware HAS increased rapidly in the last 5+ years.
But I agree that most of these ever increasing game budgets need to be addressed. Yet potential solutions like AI are unpopular, and when Sony has made smaller games they typically haven't sold as well. Though I don't have a problem with Spider-man 2 costing $300m or GTA6 reportedly costing $2bn because these games have and will make a tidy profit. But they are the rarer exceptions, almost sure-fire hits.
@Mikey856
Go back under the bridge, troll 👾
why does this site always seem to diminish negative public backlash? Gamers complaining about concord were labeled haters, now people not even being vitriolically negative, but just disliking a video en masse are made fun of. They're literally the people the product is intended for. If they don't like it, what exactly is the acceptable format for them to express that?
@theSpectre the real question is who is going to get the 600$ special edition Xbox Series X?
@themightyant So you also couldn’t come up with a better term huh? lol
At least we can agree that we are not responsible for Sony’s financial situation so they shouldn’t try to milk their customers to get out of a problem they got themselves into.
We're due for another game industry crash. Hopefully it gets all the investors to bail so we can go back to publishers making smaller but more enjoyable games that don't cost millions or billions to create.
The criticism from my point of view is very understandable.
Let's start with presentation of the PS5PRO, they do it by "celebrating" how awesome the base PS5 is BUT there will be something better out there and how do we show this off, here goes:
They show lackluster comparison "pictures/videos" on YouTube, which is a joke in itself. No word about power consumption, noise level and so on. Given some peoples problems with the PS4PRO noise level is baffeling.
The Pro is addressed to enthusiasts and such, so I would assume that many of those people had a base PS5 (day one - so no detachable disc drive) and have also a huge library of games (digital and most likely also physical).
So of course Sony asks: why a version with disc drive and lets remove the vertical stand while we are at it.
I addressed the different pricing for US/UK/Europe already, so I will not repeat myself there.
Sony is acting like a bully right now, lets hope someone comes along and puts them down to ground level soon.
@IOI i respectfully disagree , all of what you listed above is always 100% optional. we all know how expensive video games are and can be as a hobby. they still offer the base ps5 for those who don't want to spend the extra money , that will play the same games as the ps5 pro. i wouldn't exactly say its abusive , for those reasons.
@NoHope unless Xbox sits up from the canvas like the Undertaker, no one is coming Chief.
@Maubari thanks for missing my point.
I can say with full confidence that the cpu in the Ps5 pro has zero chance of running Gta 6 at 60fps
Removed - flaming/arguing; user is banned
@Maubari what on earth are you talking g about bro. I think you are thinking waaaay too much into this lol. It’s a games console if you can’t afford it we don’t care, go and whinge on pure Xbox about it. I love this site and being a supporter but the Push community is insufferable at times
@Mustoe @jrt87 The people who like to wrap themselves in Sony brand "Luxury products" do make me laugh. It's a plastic console. It's barely a midrange PC. Then again, I suppose it's the same that spend thousands on a Bose audio system and live the "lifestyle" of "luxury". You didn't buy high end, you spent way too much on mediocre products that convinced you it's high end. Only Sony seems to have crafted this mentality of gaming as a "Luxury passtime" for the wealthy simply by overcharging. Which is ironic when their lifeblood was casuals. Reminds me of Keeping Up Appearances lol.
@nessisonett Beyond just Concord and Pro arguments, there's an interesting development to all this that Playstation went from a golden brand that could do no wrong to non-stop-back-to-back backlash, division, and outright blunders. The short term impact is these products. The long term impact is the whole of PS brand isn't as infallable as it once was. They're dominant now but there's long term harm to the brand happening as a collective result of multiple bad decisions.
TBF I don't think it's just a case of the price. It's a combination of price + negligible upgrade + no games.
The fact that there were last gen games being used to show off the power of this thing is laughable.
I never thought we'd have a repeat of the out of touch PS3 days from Sony but here we are. They are absolutely out of their minds with this pricing and I hope its not a sign of things to come with the eventual Playstation 6. Anyone justifying this price gouging has severely lost the plot
Don't think this is exactly shocking.
I thought YouTube dislikes were hidden
@breakneck There's nothing wrong with heavily criticizing Sony for the PS5 Pro. Yes, getting an equivalent PC would be a lot more money. It's always been that way. There are multiple reasons why a lot of people have chosen to game on video game consoles rather than PC, and that is because of cost, convenience, and such. Yes, this is still cheaper than PC, but it's to a point where there are a lot of people who won't be able to afford this. I don't care how many people on here say they can, as people on here are a small portion of the world. Add on the fact that it'll be nearly $800 for physical gamers, and it's borderline insane. That takes away one major reason people chose to game on video game consoles, regardless of comparisons to PCs.
This machine doesn't even need to exist in the first place. What does that mean? There was a need for the PS4 Pro. The rise of 4K. We don't need a mid-gen upgrade for a machine most of the 3rd party developers are just simply too lazy to take advantage of. Now with more power, the games will look and perform better, but only because the system is more powerful.
@Tchunga You hit the nail on the head. Like I said in my other comment, regardless of whether it is still cheaper than the PC equivalent, this is still taking away one of the major reasons people chose to game on video game consoles rather than a PC in the first place. $700-$800, depending on whether you need a disc drive (which is now stupidly selling out anyways), is simply not affordable anymore for a lot of people.
As much as I prefer to game on PlayStation in order to get some of the 3rd party blockbusters that you can't get with Nintendo or first party titles like Horizon, it's getting to a point where if I want to keep gaming I'll have no choice but to switch to Nintendo. They are extremely anti-consumer as well with their refusal to drop prices on games that have been out for several years, but at least you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to game overall. Maybe Horizon 3 will be out before the PS6 comes out, which is the one game I absolutely need to play as I need to finish the series that got me to buy a PS5. Then I might consider switching.
If Sony announced a bunch of first party single player PS5 games for 2025-26 and the Pro model included a disk drive and a stand, I think people wouldn't be as mad with this reveal as they are now.
@waynesworld well there is a rumored games show case for September , so i guess we will see if they finally announce some first party games now that the pro is finally revealed. i don't think any one was expecting game announcements during the pro announcement since it was only 10 mins long.
Alot of broke people
@Tchunga not really the same thing but this is far from the ps3 era , and i loved the ps3. but the biggest issue is the ps3 outside of first part dev's was very difficult to develop for. vs the ps5 pro was made to make game development easier for developers.
People seem to miss the point of Pro consoles just like they do with VR headsets.
The PS5 Pro is a halo product. It's not meant to sell in volumes, but to provide a higher reference point in terms of brand image and recognition.
Having the world's most powerful (and expensive) console gives Sony a clear edge, even if the vast majority of people end up buying the standard model.
Additionally, the few enthusiasts who bite the bullet are usually the most vocal users, which helps amplifying positive buzz around the product line. Not to mention the Digital Foundry videos that will inevitably crown the PS5 Pro versions of games the "best" among consoles, further solidifying that superiority notion.
Circling back to VR, PSVR2 is a value add. When choosing which console to buy, many people will opt for PlayStation simply because it offers the option of jumping into VR in the future, regardless of they ever doing it.
@twitchtvpat Far from the PS3 era? This is literally the new "$599.99 US dollars" mate. Just read the title of the article you're commenting on "PS5 Pro Reveal Is Already Sony's Most Disliked Console Announcement" if that doesn't scream PS3 era Sony then idk what does
I'm doing my part!!!
@DonJorginho like Ye would
@Art_Vandelay yeah, nah. This simply looks ridiculous on Sony
@PerpetualBoredom damn straight lmao
@Tchunga i'm going to try my best to word this respectfully, but the pro system is obviously going to cost more then the base system. and honestly i don't really care about the dislike thing , since youtube doesn't even natively have a dislike button so its not even 100%. i respect this isn't for every one , and people can dislike it all they want. i just find it weird its turning into people ( not saying you but in general) attacking others because they want to buy it. and i fully expect this isn't going to be easy because a lot of people are going to pre-order one and i think its going to be close to selling out. i mean the attachable disc drives are sold out in a lot of places already. whats even more crazy is how people were actually willing to pay 800 or even more towards 1,000 for the ps5 on ebay when it first came out.
@Mikey856 I was scratching my head and honestly could only think of the ps5's pretty garbage looking ray tracing, but that's what you're upgrading for? Guess money is no object for you 😆
@roe
That's the thing, I'm guessing R&D costs for this were pretty low. They added a new GPU and racing stripes on the side, essentially. It has a slightly different form factor but similar enough they can make it compatible with the disc drive attachment. It's 95% the same thing as the base model.
I think this is a cheap patchwork overall. Mark Cerny probably put it together over the course of a weekend in his basement. And I think that was intentional because I'm sure they don't anticipate blockbuster sales on this.
@Banjo-
I never thought I'd agree with you on anything, but hell might be freezing over. Because you hit the nail on the head here. To add to your points, the main point of contention for me is not the price, it is the removal of the disc drive.
The demographic they are targeting and that has the money to buy this is still attached to physical media more than any other subsection of the market. And they pulled the disc drive. So who is this for?
It's not for little Fortnight Billy buying vBucks with his mom's credit card or COD Bro #73859593. And at that same time it isn't exactly a premium product either made to target the bleeding market hardcore crowd, is it? Considering they removed a major component of the base model.
I... really don't get this.
@twitchtvpat
Yeah, everyone should remain respectful. The "You are too poor for this" versus the "If you buy this you are an idiot" remarks help nobody.
If you feel this checks all the boxes for you, then that's it. I worry about the broader market trends associated with this, or the fact it might set a precedent to release digital only consoles going forward. Those are personal concerns, though.
I sincerely hope this bombs, because it represents a future I don't want, i.e. high prices / digital only. Some people aren't too fussed about it though, and I can't really have bad feelings about that.
@NEStalgia Astro Bot also isn’t helping as much as I thought it would. Reviewed really well but isn’t selling, at least in the UK, like I thought it might. Plus it being essentially a playable advert makes it tainted by the general backlash towards the PS brand. I’ve seen more memes making fun of the corporate side of it than actual people playing and enjoying it, which is a shame but understandable.
@UnlimitedSevens if they did release a disc version for 799 and the digital version 699 would that have been better? i don't think they want a digital only future or they wouldn't add the ability to put a disc drive in it. i think they just wanted to make the price as low as possible and give the consumer the ability to decide to keep it digital only or to add the disc. same with the ability of the original ps5 to add extra memory was up to the user in how much memory they wanted to add to the console with out adding any extra cost to the base price. in the end if the extra bells and whistles don't matter to that person , then they can go with the normal ps5 which will still play all those same games the ps5 pro will. so its not like they are leaving people behind because they'll still get those games and not be excluded from them. which is why i avoided the ps4 pro because i owned a ps4 back then. but now i'm better off so upgrading to me is worth it , but its fully understand able that its clearly not geared towards everyone.
@nessisonett interesting, I'd seen the #1 on Amazon stuff and just assumed it was doing great. Idk what's more interesting, that there's so much brand backlash from a brand that for so long could do no wrong it's tainting their best release in years, or that the PS5 player base is so alien at this point games like Astro can't sell to them. Maybe it really is a box to play fortnite with better graphics. For $700.
@twitchtvpat it's a 45% GPU bump and a larger SSD for 183% price increase from the digital launch price 4 years ago. I don't think that's as cheap as they could make it.... It's priced to maximize margin and probably pay for ps6 r&d and their "we didn't invent it here" ai upscaler.
@NEStalgia well like i said, if people don't think its worth it , then that's fine , they can still play ps5 games on the normal ps5. they aren't going to make ps5 pro only games , so no one is missing out on anything. in the end if some one thinks its worth it, then they'll buy it. but to me its silly for some one to get upset at another person because they are going to buy the ps5 pro.
@twitchtvpat The reason people get upset at the people taking the bait is because they're functioning as enablers that will continue this direction for everyone. It's like with scabs enabling corporate labor abuse, collaborators helping invaders, the group that goes along with the abuse because they benefit from it make things worse in the future for everyone else.
So yes you're right in an ideal world but those people are also right because the people that go along with it are causing indirect negative effects to everyone else in the long term.
@KilloWertz but is it replacing the current PS5 that we use? Or is it an option for people who want more. Again if it is a ***** product the market will reject it. Being criticized for the price is weird when there are cheaper versions on the market and they don't plan to replace them with this version.
Will the old stand work on the new one? Or did they tweak the dimensions or move the fixings enough to intentionally make them incompatible? With Sony not allowing you to gift or sell games that would be the biggest warning of an abusive market.
@Pinkman You're not the only one, dying light 2 has those options and i'm not quite sure what i was supposed to be looking at? i opted for performance mode because the other modes had lag, i could feel the stutters on my ps5 controller as you move around in game, but i'm sensitive to low frame rates though, i'm ex pc gamer, been 4+ years now i think? my last system was intel 9700k RTX 2080Ti 32gb ram m.2 drive 2560x1440 144Hz nvidia gsync. I'm a poor man now though hahaha!
Lest we forget a lot of us couldn't get hold of a ps5 for 2 years and they bring out an overpriced model with no disc drive , and you pay for the stand separately absolute liberty , I'm furious , hardly any 1st party games ps5 is an absolute joke !!!

Probably because it is usually HOW things are complained about rather than that they are. And for something like this where only about 10% - 15% of the market will buy one that is 85% - 90% who won't, which will attract a lot of negativity over the cost. It's fine to say, "it's too expensive, it's not for me", and walk away, but instead gamers like to dogpile. Many seemingly enjoy complaining more than actually enjoying games.
@UnlimitedSevens Thank you. I respect all genuine respectful fans like you and remember their names and comments after I bought the PS4 soon after launch and posted my questions first and complaints some time later.
I'm intrigued by any new hardware, so I wanted to hear everything that Cerny said before posting anything. Generations are blurred and consoles are progressively becoming gaming PCs. There are no exclusives, not even first-party, but that's not a bad thing at all. Only Nintendo keeps doing exclusives and stays away from PC, precisely the only one that needs better hardware to run games on.
Back to PS5 Pro, not only the PS4 and PS5 disc drives are suddenly useless for those that have them, but they need a separate disc drive and connect it to the newest console to enjoy their old games in AI-upscaled 4K-8K resolution. How much sense does it make? I said this elsewhere, the PS4 Pro made more sense because of its price and because it became a pseudo-4K replacement for PS4 and even had an overclocked CPU. If the PS4 Pro found a relatively small audience, I don't know what PS5 Pro is after, considering the price and how is marketed as a backwards enhancements machine without a disc drive. Of course, new games and updated games could benefit from the extra GPU power, but expecting a game changer like the upcoming current-gen GTA at double frame rate and with some kind of next-generation ray tracing with the same CPU is guileless. Like you said, it's a rushed and cheap to develop PS5 Digital Edition with a GPU upgrade, not even marketed properly.
@SlipperyFish 60 Hz is not guaranteed for all games:
https://gameranx.com/updates/id/508455/article/playstation-5-pro-will-still-have-30-fps-games/
@Thumper yeah it will never be all games, that responsibility is on the devs, but sony have stated that as the target to developers. People are still asking for it and Sony are trying to provide it
@NEStalgia i'm sorry but this isn't even close to the situation you compared it to. scabs? cm'on its video games. its not like the ps5 pro comes out and the ps5 is obsolete. they will both literally play the same games. making that point completely irrelevant. so like i said at the end of the day people should worry less what others do and worry more about themself.
For me,
We are 4 years? In to the PS5 and it has probably been the most underwhelming lineup of games anyway.
The usual EA annual updates. Remasters of old games that I prefer to play the originals of for nostalgia anyway.
Ever increasing costs of PS Plus for no real benefit. Game Catalog is poor when you compare it to Game Pass from Xbox etc, etc.
I can whole heartedly say that with the pricing on this they have completely missed the mark. And to charge for a stand just seems to be nothing but a kick in the teeth for Sony to profit more.
Realistically Xbox needs to step up to get some competition going again.
Sony, what have you done?! You’re greed is really showing through this time.
Biggest joke for me was Ybarra (I think?) saying that it would effectively only cost enthusiasts $350 because of the value they'd get trading in their base PS5, and then seemingly assuming that you'd get somewhere near the original cost on a trade-in.
Currys would give me £170. Music Magpie £270. Nobody will give you anywhere near the original RRP.
@twitchtvpat Just because there are paypigs out there that are willing to pay exorbitant prices for products that aren't at all worth it does not mean the PS5 Pro is somehow a good value. Of course its going to sell out at launch, even the Wii U sold out at launch if you remember. And it was generally hard to find for the first 6 months it was on the market. That's just how it always goes with new tech, the enthusiasts show up on day one, no matter what, and the rest of the market is TBD. It's not a one-to-one sign of either popularity or value. Yes, there are some people interested in this machine. But there are far more people that are disinterested in it as well
@Banjo-
Yeah, definitely, agreed 100%. We all enjoy the same hobby and we want it to be better. Naturally we all have different ideas about that based on our different personal experiences.
I don't get what Sony is doing. I don't get what Microsoft is doing. I grew up playing Final Fantasy on PS1 AND I remember going to HALO LAN parties in my teens. It was about fun, and it was awesome. Money always gets in the way. They always just want more while giving us less, and this console perfectly encapsulates that for me.
I can't believe the PS1 broke into the market by placing itself as the plucky underdog compared to the stoic, corporate, clinical monster it is today. Maybe nostalgia talking a bit there, I don't know. It's unrecognizable to me now. I won't talk about Microsoft or else this comment would be too long. I guess we grew up and things changed.
I just want this hobby to stay as awesome for others as it was for me back then. I don't think people coming in at the PS3/360 and after have any idea how much has been taken away. If they did, they'd demand more. I get certain market realities exist, but customers (not consumers) can always demand more. I hope they vote with their wallets with the Pro.
@twitchtvpat It's not just about "but I can still play PS5". What happens with Pro will set precedent for what they can get away with with PS6. That's what people are upset about. This is the testing ground, and if it's successful then it WILL be pushed on everyone next round.
@UnlimitedSevens When PS started it was the personal obsession of Kutaragi to become Nintendo basically, and it was a passionate division basically running independently of Sony Corp. and more or less unwanted by Sony Corp. It was a passion project fighting it's own corporate masters.
Now it's the main cash cow of Sony Corp. Where in '95 TVs and Walkman were the money makers and this silly gaming thing wasn't even going to get the Sony brand on it, today TVs don't matter and Walkman is irrelevant and PS is the bank. "Playstation" basically is a different company now just as much as Xbox that was running kind of independent to the side of the corp then became part of the corp after ABK.
@NEStalgia
That's it in a nutshell. For those of us that know, know. They push these changes incrementally like boiling a frog. This is a market test.
It all started with a 2.99 horse armor DLC. Now we live in microtransaction hell. That was a very gradual thing.
@NEStalgia
Yeah they marketed themselves like the plucky underdog because they WERE the plucky underdog. They did well for themselves with that angle. Probably a little too well.
Hey, did you ever go PC like you were thinking? How has that experience been for you? Because this seems like a good bookend for me. I'm not supporting this crap anymore.
PushSquare should do a PC-specific sister site.
@UnlimitedSevens Yeah, Sony somehow forgets that the whole success of their platform from the start was being easier and cheaper for devs to publish and distribute on than anyone else, and being cheaper for the consumer than anyone else. When the value platform becomes the "luxury" (lol I still laugh at calling a plastic console a luxury product - wake me when it's glass and aluminum) product, and sales fall, and they can't figure out why......you really have to question the leadership. When they have to announce they can't actually meet their sales targets on their own platform........ While being a near monopoly.....WTF are they doing?
Yeah, I've committed to going full PC now. It at least will replace the Xbox because it literally is an Xbox Pro, and MS more or less states so, and my hope is it replaces the PS too if PS is committing to PS. If we assume PS6 and XSY are $700 boxes, that's $1400 into the PC before you get to costs of games and subs. And PC GP even if I keep it is cheaper than GPU anyway.
For the moment I haven't actually finished setting the main rig up. But I've mostly been playing handheld using my Legion and Ally, so it's still full PC gaming these days except when I use my Quest 3 (which will also be used for wireless PCVR. And I spent way too much on Quest 3 games that require roomscale while the weather is still good enough to use outdoors, because roomscale goes out the window when I'm indoors.) Honestly it's been seamless. The Legion and Ally are just consoles that have a Windows desktop. And cheep, cheep deals. I blew like $650 rebuilding half of my XB/PS library that was in my backlog that I actually intended to play (HFW, GoT, 7R, CP2077, witcher 3 a bunch of JRPGs, ton of VR games you can't get on PS etc) minus Game Pass stuff, and it ONLY cost 650 on the summer steam sale + GoG lol to rebuy the more immediate games of my library. Not the entire library mind you, but a lot of that other stuff in my library is much older and even cheaper, I'll buy it if I actually get to playing it for less than the price of a Happy Meal.
Budet wise I only got a 2TB SSD, I'm kind of wishing I went higher because on the board setup the GPU obscures the SSD bays, and this board has 5 (2 are PCIE5 so it's PS6-speed-ready) so if I assemble like this I'll have to remove the GPU to add an SSD, which is a PITA because those GPUs are huge and heavy yet fragile. And you don't want to damage a card at that price to install an SSD lol.
And half of that, including HFW and GoT have VR mods on PC. HFW, GoT, Elden Ring in freaking VR? Yes, please. Of course that will be dodgy and require some setup, but I'm down.
All of that said, for the big rig I actually have the main setup assembled and sitting there, yes, I have a fishtank case, yes, it's unicorn poop RGB shooting rainbows everywhere, fite me. I like shiny things. Even have the core OS, steam, GoG setup. Just have to go for the GPU, and as much as I said I'd never ever do it....I was looking at 4070 TiS's....then thought maybe 4080....and now I'm actually considering going all the way to 4090. I'm not actually a believer in 4090, it's massively SERIOUSLY overkill for absolutely anything and nobody actually needs one for normal gaming, at all, it's a status symbol not a beneficial purchase. However.....for VR players.....it's actually still too weak by half. There's waiting for 5090, but by all indications that's delayed to 2025, will probably be astronomical even more than 4090, and like consoles will be heavily scalped and not readily available for months after that, so we're looking at probably a year from now before you can easily get one. So maybe 4090 for the next 4 years and look at 6090 by the time it's time to upgrade. Or, HOPEFULLY 6080 will still be a monster for VR vs 4090. I don't actually want to stick with flagship forever if I go that way, it's just a jump start for VR purposes if I do it.
@breakneck No, it's not replacing the current one. That doesn't mean that the price isn't ridiculous though. Expecting people to not complain about it when it is indeed overpriced and completely unnecessary is just silly.
There's more to it than that though. If they plan on charging $700 for this, isn't it a possibility that the PS6 will be at least that much? If it seemed like everybody was ok with the PS5 Pro and it's price, then Sony would be even more likely to actually do that. 'Everybody thinks the price is ok? Alright, then let's see how high we can go with the PS6."
@NEStalgia i'm sorry but this isn't even close to the situation you compared it to. at the end of the day its only video games, we all obviously love gaming or we wouldn't even be on this site? its not like the ps5 pro comes out and the ps5 is obsolete. they will both play the same games leaving no one behind. so if some one wants to buy it or not is all a personal choice.
@KilloWertz i mean the lower price didn't help things when they were out of stock for months at a time. and then people ended up paying double on ebay just so they could have one for the holidays.
@twitchtvpat At the end of the day, this is an extremely poor value product fueled by nothing but marketing, vendor lock, and selling "premium" emotionalism. Are long term customers locked into an existing supposed to be accepting of the company throwing it's weight and moving to extortionate pricing because they can? Should existing customers feel comfortable with their existing vendor locked digital library investment knowing they will be hostage to this pricing mentality with every future generation?
Burying your head in the sand and riding with "well people that can justify overspending on poor value offerings will love it!" Is enabling this to be continue. People should be pushing back on a major brand offering poor value products.
You know YOU'RE not forced to buy it, no?
@NEStalgia i don't really have much to add other then you will never accept that people have free will to do what they want with their money. why should you think people will respect what you think , when you clearly don't respect what others think or do with their hard earned money? sorry if its not allowed to say that , but i had to.
@twitchtvpat and on the same token, you seem to not comprehend that a large population pushing back at a company urinating on the relationship of trust they have built with their customers over decades by clearly and blatantly presenting terrible value as a respectable offering and using it as a test bed to see where the customers breaking point is going forward. Trust us hard to earn, easy to shatter. Sony did just that here. Blowback is the inevitable and expected result of that. Many gamers have grown accustomed to being exploited. Now some are pushing back.
@NEStalgia see the issue, you can do all of that , and also respect other people that they can do what they want to do with their money. thats the beauty in life , not every one thinks like you and that's okay. i have no issue with you doing your own thing , which is my point to worry more about yourself and less about others.
@twitchtvpat What a small portion of the world was willing to pay for a console initially is not something to defend your stance of burying your head in the sand and criticizing anybody who thinks differently than you.
What you've said doesn't change the fact that this is a troubling path. An already expensive console as the initial console for the generation, and then an insanely expensive mid-gen refresh. If that becomes the norm, and that would be asinine, then the console that is initially released at the beginning of the console generation will end up being even more expensive than it should've been if people buy the insanely expensive completely unnecessary mid-gen refresh. That's the point I'm trying to make at this point, but for some odd reason you think we're wrong and it's better to just bury our heads in the sand because, well, I've got nothing because that stance just makes no sense.
@twitchtvpat You were wondering why people are upset at people that are buying it and I explained. I wasn't calling you out. However I do believe those people are justified in feeling angry toward the whales supporting it and also explained why.
PlayStation seems to want to become a luxury lifestyle premium product. That's the standard Sony behavior for product lines facing sales trouble. I don't recall that strategy succeeding once, which is how PlayStation became their main earner to begin with.
@UnlimitedSevens Right. My experience with PS and Xbox is limited, since the PS4/Xbox One generation, but when I was a child I would play on Nintendo, Sega and Sony systems because of friends and family. I got a PS4 before an Xbox One and I hadn't had a Sony or Xbox console before that.
Criticising the changes that you are not liking is absolutely fair. I'm satisfied with what Xbox One and Series X have given me compared to PS4, but I have criticised Nintendo the most, precisely because I grew up with Nintendo consoles. I feel that nobody can take that right away from me and that's exactly how you feel about PS.
I can't believe how evil and miserly Nintendo has become and how their new games reflect that, but also their geniuses are no longer making the games. It's shocking reading other fans justifying anything that they do. Back in the day, a fan tried to convince me of New Super Mario Bros. 2 being as good as Super Mario World. On NL, you read people justifying Nintendo suing fans because they make fan art. That's how you know if an adult is totally nuts.
Overall, the business has changed so much in recent years. I think it was PS4 and Xbox One that started the change, with consoles built as PCs. I admit that right now it's the only way their business can be profitable. It's not about consoles sold anymore, but software and subscriptions, but that shouldn't affect the quality of games or the value perceived by customers.
What I miss the most is what has been lost for gamers. Now, when they make a game, it's often what they think will make the most money. This is very obvious to me with Nintendo casualising their games and ignoring or outsourcing IPs that aren't as popular as Mario and Zelda. It's sad how low the quality and creativity can go and how little it matters, as long as people pay.
I don't understand what Sony is doing either. Basically, it was all about real generations and exclusives when they marketed PS5, trying to make a difference because Microsoft said that they would support Xbox One for three more years. Then it was all about supporting PS4 and PS5 simultaneously with cross-gen releases and remasters. Then, the Call of Duty World War against Microsoft using the most hypocritical reasoning I have ever heard, while paying Activision for Call of Duty exclusive content and third parties for excluding Xbox from multiplatform games. Then, hiring studios and making online games as service for PS5 and then switched to PS5 and PC (Helldivers 2, Concord) and now, the new CEO is after a multiplatform strategy including all games, while Square Enix decides to also reboot their platform strategy. Since PS5 launched until now, Sony has had like five different strategies.
It's nice that they are welcoming PC players, but I can't help thinking that they are releasing the Windows ports later on purpose and including their flagship games late in their subscriptions to first sell an upgraded console and justify the £$700/€800 price, the £$€100 disc drive and the £$€70 tag per game that they started, before the players are able to play somewhere else or can benefit from the subscriptions they pay anyway. For the players. They couldn't have chosen a more cynical slogan, unless "l" is removed.
@KilloWertz i never said any of you were wrong , where did i say that? but its weird you guys keep repeating the same thing, " burying your heads in sand". because other people don't share the same opinion as you guys we must be ignorant to it? i'm good , i don't really see any point to keep this going when its just going to be us repeating everything again. have a good day.
Sony are just going greedy
