New World: Aeternum is now in open beta on PS5, allowing everyone to jump in and sample the Amazon Games title over the weekend. For those totally out of the loop, this is an action RPG that can be played solo or in co-op. New World started life as a full-blown MMO on PC a few years back, and while it had to endure an especially rocky launch, many who stuck with the game ended up being pretty positive on the experience.
Aeternum is essentially a relaunch, as New World arrives on consoles for the first time on the 15th October. It's now being marketed specifically as an "Action RPG", rather than an MMO, although from what we understand, the title's overall structure remains largely the same.
Again, the beta's available to download now on Sony's current-gen system. It runs from the 13th September to the 16th September, and participants will be able to play through a good chunk of the adventure, all the way to level 30. You can also unlock a bunch of rewards for use in the full game, although as you'd expect, your actual character and quest progression from the beta won't carry over.
Will you be giving New World: Aeternum a try this weekend? Maybe you played the original version on PC? Get exploring in the comments section below.

Let's hope I can get in before the beta ends!
I enjoyed the closed beta, but the fullscreen water mark was a real turn off.
Just realized I’m still under NDA for that beta. It’s been nice knowing you guys 🫡
@ScottyG
Thank you for your service, let's hope the NDA assassins makes it quick and painless. 😁
I haven't been following this game very closely but wasn't the PC version quite mismanaged?
@LuXifer It was, yeah. The original release was very buggy and it took quite a few updates for it to get back on track.
Its reputation took a beating because of the launch version, but by most accounts it did get a lot better, and plenty of people say it was a really enjoyable game once the issues had been ironed out.
However, it did struggle to retain players, even with the improvements. It's been plodding along until now with only dedicated players, and the hope will be that this Aeternum version will breathe new life into it.
Beta seemed decent enough, but I preferred Throne and Liberty a lot more.
@ShogunRok
Thanks for the summary. It does sound like they could use the expanded playerbase a console release would give them. But I don't envy them the role of keeping both PC and console camps satisfied.
Hope they pull it off and give everyone a fun mmo. 😃
I don't do betas, but may give it a try once it is out, if the reviews are good.
I’m just wondering why this Amazon game is not on the Amazon Prime list…
Played it for 20m, got to level 5, found a book on a shipwreck, immediately got stuck in place, unstuck did nothing. Then an announcement that the shard is shutting down. Go look for another possible shard, no dice, only 1 on US East. Got kicked.
Made a new character, went for US West, all 1 shard full. Uninstalled game. Absolute garbage.
I put alot of hours into it on PC on original release. Plays well on console though, actually works nicely on controller. I stopped playing the Beta as soon as I read that progress doesn't carry on to the full release, absolute waste of time.
Only managed to get in twice. Looks gorgeous and handles okayish. Big stutters throughout and the second play, the game just crashed and kicked me out. Not a day 1 maybe a day 365?
