Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team Sandfall Interactive has responded to concerns its debut RPG may come with a catch or some sort of drawback since it's not charging $70 for the game. Taking to X (or Twitter), the studio confirmed the recently listed $50 price point is indeed correct and addressed the suggestion it'll be a short experience since the developer isn't charging full price.
It said: "To be clear: we poured all of our hearts and souls into this game. When you play Expedition 33, you can expect 30+ hours of main game, and [just] as much side content for our completionist Expeditioners." Suggesting you can get up to 60 hours of playtime out of Expedition 33, it continued: "Pricing that you see from your local retailers is accurate, and we can’t wait for you to get your hands on the game." The turn-based RPG is now slated to arrive in Spring 2025.
Since its announcement in the summer, there has been a lot of excitement surrounding the game, but sceptics began to emerge when retail listings were uploaded earlier this week at a $50 price point. With high production values and an all-star voice cast, some suggested the RPG would be on the short side. Sandfall Interactive has now comprehensively addressed that worry, with the statement its main story alone will be over 30 hours in length.
Explaining the $50 price point, it said: "We are a small team with an indie spirit, and we're creating something we believe is truly special. We aren't an AAA studio, this is our first game, and we want as many people discovering our world as possible." It's an important reminder that not everyone is out to pull a fast one on you.

50$ is fine by me.the game looks really good.peple complain about 70$ and when its 50$ they still complain.🤔you guys want a turn based rpg with really good graphics than buy expedition 33.word up son
This is impressive. If this game ends up as good as it looks, it could be massive.
I can't wait. It looks awesome!
Looks great and just goes to show what can be done with an AA(?) release.
This game looks insanely good for a "budget" game
Gamers are now complaining about games not choosing 70 bucks? Smh. Cheap doesn't equal bad. But also, I'm realizing most gamers aren't playing games for fun anymore.
I’ll play it on GamePass but definitely will buy it at some point as well to show support if it turns out as good as it sounds like it will.
I (almost) feel sorry for devs and publishers at this point. If it's $70, gamers moan about the expense, if it's $50, gamers moan about a possible catch. No wonder there's so much playing it safe with remakes.
I don’t really pay attention to the price of JRPGs (apart from Yakuza) as I know it could be years before I get to them. I still have all the Trails of cold steel games from 3 onwards to play. I still have Tales of Berseria. I still have the Caligula effect, blue reflection second light, some atelier games…I just don’t have the time, so they are usually £10-20 when I get to them anyway.
Then again, I just watched the video and it does look superb, so I’m sure I’ll get it at some point sooner; starting from a lower price is still good for discounts (probably). Maybe leaves some scope for me to justify some more appealing outfits if there is any DLC. I don’t usually do that, but this does look gorgeous and the clothes do not.
Too cheap, won't buy
@Cutmastavictory if not for fun, why play?
This whole thing has basically secured my interest in the game when I thought it just looked like an interesting curio before.
Didn't do Helldivers 2 any harm
It’s not exactly the first time AA game has released at £50.
Gamers are weird that they are singling this out.
I can't imagine picking this up over Metaphor as my next big RPG, but Metaphor won't be complete for a while...hmm.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner it's not weird. They released that the price is $50, so they also wanted to clarify that it has just as much meat on its bones as a typical $70game...then they provided some more context as to why they chose this price point. People asked the obvious, not weird at all question, and they answered.
Yup, just as I thought.
They're doing everything right for this release so far, and I really hope it'll be a success for them.
Oh wow, they are doing a great job of selling this game. It looks very good and I hope it turns out well. I am almost certain to get it.
30 hours main quest for $50 is insanely good. Even at $70 it would be good if the game is anything like we have seen so far.
This game just keeps getting better and better. It's reveal was the highlight for me during Xbox's event
30+ hours sounds much better for a turn based RPG, more like back in the old days. Games have become too long and bloated, often 50-100 hours for the genre, which is a hard pass on most titles.
A 30 hour RPG is so rare that actually intrigues me MORE. I only have so much time to spend and spending 3 months on a 100+ hour RPG isn't feasible a lot of the time
Keeps getting better and better. Devora Wilde (Laezel in BG3) also confirmed to be part of the cast, seems they got a lot of talent from BG3.
I hope people really support this game, since it will also be in Gamepass I'm afraid the sales will be light.
Only the gaming community would complain about a deal being too good.🤦♂️
It's a new studio's debut title. It makes sense that they would consider a cheaper price tag since they are trying to get their name and game out there as much as possible. A cheaper price tag will help with that.
I personally can't wait to play it. It has continued to impress me with every new trailer.
There is this principle that bigger sales numbers is better than a big margin.
It's something big companies struggle to understand. 😂
Maybe unexpectedly, but it also earned them free publicity, it seems.
I'm not buying it until there's an extra 30 quid early access version.
$50 for a AA, turn-based RPG. It's just not going to work out well.
Every single thing about this game seems catered directly to me. Lord Ruler, I hope it delivers.
For the players. Developer of the year.
Game looks amazing, confirmed to have the perfect length and is only $50? What's the catch?!?!?
Usuallywhen a game is priced under the usual, people have a right to be suspect. But not always. I do think its a good move on their part as a new team with a new IP to price it lower. As a new developer. I think its more important to get more eyes on your game as opposed to hoping people take notice and are willing to fork out 70 dollars. Depending on the games being released around it, lots of times games like this from new publishers, get left behind. Being a little cheaper, people may be willing to get two games or if deciding between games, the lower price may be a deciding factor.
What a scam. $50 for 30 hours when I could spend $70 for 100 hours? $1.67 per hour versus $0.70 per hour? It's more than double the price!! Who do these jokers think they are? AA indeed!
Kidding. Obviously. I'm really looking forward to this game.
@Cutmastavictory
Christ almighty people, nobody's complaining.
Always assuming the worst without a moments thought.
People were curious as to why. Is it super short? Is it not of the quality it seems? What's going on?
Nobody's complaining man, can it.
@IntrepidWombat
Besides some obvious atrocities you didn't mention, you did expose Ubisoft's strategy
Day 1 purchase for me then! This reminds me of "Lost Odyssey" a bit. I am about ready to jump back into a turn based RPG so time next year.
I hope this game is great and sells a lot to show the "big dogs" that you can create something great without raking consumers over the coals.
@Voltan
In my day, a budget game was £1.99- and I still checked the reviews first!😆
The risk of people making a big deal about this is that it shows gamers are now conditioned to a $70 price point and will encourage more devs to just slap that price tag on games even if they could have launched at a lower price point.
Big props to Sandfall for releasing this at a competitive price into what will be a busy market next spring
They had my curiosity, but now they have my attention! Definetly have to still check out Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden for it's AA bliss
Perfect. Price variation is exactly what should be going on in a competitive market.
Frankly I'm surprised that the world's various anti-trust regulators haven't taken an interest in how all the AAA publishers have converged on £70/$70 being the standard price for a video game at launch. Seems almost like the definition of tacit collusion.
70$ probably isn't a lot. But 70$ games are usually 60£ or more in the UK for the same game. And £60 is a lot. And I never buy a game over £60. So it's a good thing it's less, coz I'd buy it.
This is Gunna be gamepass game of the year easy 😎 maybe goty altogether can't wait 🙂
50 bucks for a 30 hours turn based RPG that looks like it's made with AAA budget? That sounds like what we used to had back in PS1-PS2 days.
But some people complaint and think there's a catch? Well just don't buy the game 🤷♂️
If it looks this good throughout and plays well and is 60 hours..... damn.
It looks great but unfortunately I just can't gel with turn based games. But I hope everyone who does get into it has a great time
That gorgeous ass game will only be 50 bucks?!
Elden Ring was £50 too. A very pleasant surprise that convinced me in a random Argos to buy the game on the spot.
Gamers are the worst they complain about everything what is new.
@themightyant There's a lot to he said for games having obvious beginnings, middles, and ends.
Glad to hear the game will be on the shorter side as far as RPGs are concerned. 100 hr RPGs are nice every once in a while but there is typically a LOT of bloat throughout.
If this game turns out to be great, it might be the one of the most selfless releases this gen.
Fine with that, 30 hours is a good length for an RPG.
For everyone "complaining" it's only $50, the simple solution is they should buy two copies, to reward them for the lower price and to encourage other companies to follow suit.
Buying for every platform
Day one purchase for me
I 'll tell you why... because is not a EA or ubisoft or rock *****... star company! @^$##@^$# hahahahah but im right! Right?
I don’t folks were complaining about the price being low - just cautious.
These days as gamers we’re no strangers to paying a lot of money and being shafted. We’ve also been made aware that games cost a lot, and £70 is what studios often need to charge to meet spiralling costs.
Luckily this looks refreshing, and as £50 isn’t ‘budget’ seems like if it sells well it’ll still give a small studio a hefty boost for their next project.
I’m still waiting for reviews though, the days of trusting pre-orders died a while back
It does look fantastic and I really hope it's a great success for the new studio, but sadly for me, as soon as I saw the dreaded words 'turn-based', I was out.
I hope you all enjoy it, we need new IPs more than ever atm.
Nice! Some studios are starting to get it!
This game piqued my interest at "e3" but had fallen off my radar. This definitely piques my interest again!
@Caveman49 that's the spirit! I feel the same way about fps, sports games, etc.
Fairly priced Western AA turn-based RPG that doesn't pad out the runtime and features AAA-esque presentation.
I'm very, very down for this if it reviews well.
Imagine a 50$ game being considered exceptionally cheap. What timeline is this?
No game should be over 60$. And most definitely not over 100$ for digital only special editions. If you buy those games at launch, they’re just going to make them 110$ next year.
@Frmknst it's not free though good value but not free😂
"the developer isn't charging full price". That sentence makes no sense. 50$ is full price, so is 20$ for some indy games. 80$ is giving players the bird and is rarely justified.
