Two of October's biggest game releases have just received their very first reviews, and they of course come courtesy of Japanese magazine, Famitsu.
First up, Atlus' much-anticipated fantasy RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio, earns itself a 37/40, with the panel of four awarding three 9s and a 10. Meanwhile, the Silent Hill 2 remake, developed by Bloober Team, also earns itself a high rating of 35/40 (three 9s and an 8).
It's fairly well documented that Famitsu's scores can be somewhat dubious, so obviously, you should wait for more assessments from your favourite outlets to get a better picture. Still, it's nice to get a vague idea of where this pair of PS5 titles will land.
You can expect Push Square's reviews of both games in due course. In the meantime, we have numerous hands-on previews for you to peruse:

Oh man...I think it will be a pleasant surprise if Silent Hill scores really well!
@thechetearly it will but you will still see purists say its sh*t. I mean, people were already saying its lost some of its feeling in the remake vs origional video posted yesterday.
So excited for Silent Hill now!
Fingers crossed for Silent Hill 2, it would be so nice if it scored well 😊It’s the remake of one of the most influential yet underplayed games ever.
On the Atlus side of things, based on the lengthy demo I know I will like Metaphor a lot, despite the baffling ps3 era assets
I never understand why Famitsu's scores are dubious. I can't remember them giving a bad game high marks. Their method is unconventional, with four reviewers, but they seem to be in the ballpark.
I think both games will be good (despite certain misgivings about SH2R). That said, Famitsu reviews tell one almost nothing.
Famitsu has less credibility then IGN. That said i don't doubt Metaphor: ReFantazio is fantastic considering whose making it.
When's the silent hill embargo up?
Glad to hear SH2R has met expectations and Metaphor is shaping up to be a rare day one purchase for me. 🥳
I had no idea that Famitsu was the Japanese answer to IGN...oof. Let's hope other reviewers chime in soon.
I'm hopeful for SH, but I'll only buy my game after the reviews are out.
@Kidfunkadelic83 but do the purists even know that the games entire fog feature was actually only there to shorten the render difference for the devs,
The original was average at best , so even if this remake us 20% better its still better over all. I am really looking forward to it, that and Alan wake 2 should make a good halloween playlist
@get2sammyb when is until dawn review dropping
Never had any concerns over Metaphor… but that’s some real good news about Silent Hill 2 Remake. It’ll be my first Silent Hill and that 45 minute gameplay vid from a couple of months back has me pretty hyped.
@RudeAnimat0r I was going to say the same thing. I thought the opposite was true in fact, that Famitsu scores are highly regarded.
Delighted to see good first impressions for both of these. I'll add them to my Christmas/Post Christmas list.
I won’t lie, I caved and preordered the deluxe edition for Silent Hill 2. Do I trust Bloober Team much? Not necessarily. However, I find this remake to be incredibly compelling and I’m excited to try it out, and with the preorder you get two days early access.
I'd love to play both (if SH's really close to its original without censorship or dumb creative changes).
Been a while since I've a game messed me up that bad in a game. Last time was on SH2 on PS3 and before that it was once again SH2 on PS2.
Gotta wonder why they don't make em like they used to anymore though
@Kraven
As good as it may be....
>and with the preorder you get two days early access.
This is EXACTLY why you shouldn't pre-order lol. Don't support these bad practices, sigh...
I completed Metaphor demo and it did exactly what it intended to do. Made me craving more to see what else was in the story as the prologue absolutely captivated me.
@Shepherd_Tallon @RudeAnimat0r I believe for some it goes back to ff13 and ff10-2? They got like perfect 40’s.
I could well be wrong!
I'm still getting Metafor Re Fantazio day one (Pre ordered), but for some reason the demo didn't wow me, I don't know if it's the visuals or the story pacing but it didn't click with me. Hopefully putting more hours into the full game changes that.
Silent Hill 2 getting good reviews has made me want to get it sooner, originally planned on getting it for Halloween as the misses likes having that day full of horror movies and me playing horror games.
@McTwist this I agree with my brother in law will preordered star wars and assassins creed shadows ultimate editions cause it gave him 3 days early access
famitsu has weird scoring looking back at other games they only gave a masterpiece like astrobot bot a 36/40 while they gave splatoon 3 a 39/40 score which it did not deserve..
If they were bad reviews everyone would be like "We need more to reviews" but when its a single good/great one..one is enough. Funny stuff.
Famitsu rates most games 32-40 (individually 8-10), and have a very obvious Japanese bias. And review scores mean next to nothing in the first place.
What this tells me is Metaphor probably isn't close to the quality of Persona 5 — it's just a pretty good RPG. And Silent Hill 2 is decent, but nothing exceptional. Two evaluations I could've made from just riding the vibes.
I pre-ordered Metaphor after I was blown away by the demo. Amazing world-building, interesting story, fun game mechanics and classic turn-based combat. I loved every bit of the demo and going to enjoy the hell out of the game.
After almost 12 hours with my demo save, no further assurance of Metaphor's quality is required.
Metaphor looks cool - but not cool enough for a day 1 purchase for me. Probably going to wait for a big discount.. and YS X comes out in three weeks, so that one will have my attention for the coming weeks
Cool i expect both games to do well in reviews.word up son
@RudeAnimat0r Famitsu was famous at one time but now is an absolute joke. They gave FFXIII: Lightning Returns a 37/40 for example(that means they had 4 people that thought that game was a 9 or a 10!). FFXIII-2 even got a perfect 40/40.
They have also given 30 games a perfect score and only 3 of them were not made or published by a Japanese company and one of them was Ghost of Tsushima(A game entirely set in Japan).
Thirdly they also gave perfect scores to multiple games that had cameos by the Famitsu main guy in them. I believe it was Death Stranding and 428 Shibuya Scramble(this one was around the time they started to lose credibility)
@Uromastryx I just finished alan wake 2 and all the night springs dlc what a fantastic game , runs out of steam towards the end I felt, but the ride is still great
I personally don't take Famitsu score that seriously. They gave 29/40 or 9/7/7/6 for Demon's Souls on PS3, gave perfect score 40/40 for FF XIII-2, but also gave perfect score for some of my fav games of all times like Vagrant Story.
But what makes Famitsu different is they always have four reviewers for every game they reviewed. Say you don't agree with the total score they gave like Demon's Souls 29/40. Then you can check each reviewer score, read their opinion about the game, and take one or two that fits with your opinion. You don't need to agree with the total score.
Compare to gaming site in general, each game always reviewed by one person and sometimes they put a person who doesn't like or have any fking clue about the genre or even video games. Example like Dean Takahashi, the guy who can't pass Cuphead tutorial or even aim in Doom 2016. He reviewed Mass Efect and called it "Mass Defect" because he thinks the character can't be level up. Or Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 1 which he called it as "Gears of War clone" lol unbelieveable.
Unfortunately, Famitsu doesn't have english release and not everyone outside Japan wants to translate the reviewers comments to give more context behind the score. What we got here is just the score.
But again, i played Metaphor demo for 5 hours and i think it deserves that high score. Not sure for SH 2 remake though but my prediction it could be in the 7-8 range.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Ah, fair point then if it's true. Whatever about XII, but X-2 was the first FF game I couldn't get along with.
@DennisReynolds lol impossible
Can’t wait for Silent Hill 2! Oct 8th can’t get here fast enough.
The fact I got it for like $54 from Green Man Gaming is icing on the cake.
@ChrisDeku Those FF13 trilogy scores are wild. An average rating of 97% across all three games. That's just utterly insane if you stop to think about it.
The Bloobs have got this! I’m anticipating a solid remake of Silent Hill: Deux—7’s, 8’s, and 9’s inbound!
@Weebleman Saw someone mention October 4th. Don't know how legit that is though.
@Shepherd_Tallon It wasn't X-2 that received perfect score but it's XIII-2 and XII. FF X-2 got 34/40. Here's the link if you want to check what games that earned perfect score from Famitsu
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famitsu_scores
Don't need any reviews to know if Metaphor is worth buying as I'm nearly 7 hours into the demo so it's pretty obvious I'm getting it!
Great to hear they are getting good scores though!
I’m just sitting here waiting for the real reviews. Embargo can’t end soon enough!
@atthegates cheers bud
Anime, oh that’s great! Sad body horror game, meh.
Japanese go figure.
Hoping Silent Hill gets solid reviews... Will probably pick it up regardless unless everyone says it's horrendous.
Was going to make it my game to spend my Christmas holiday on but I'll probably crack if it reviews well.
Got further into the prologue for metaphor. And I'm enjoying it a lot more now. Some of the dialogue and pivotal moments don't really hit as well as they could've tho but I'm a lot more invested rn and the gameplay is grabbing me more too. Looking forward to seeing where this goes
Both games look amazing. The metaphor demo got me hooked and I hope to continue it soon.
As for silent hill 2 remake, I really hope for bloober that the purists and harassers get to eat their own s**t.
I've started the Metaphor demo and have enjoyed it so far. The art style and setting are more interesting than Persona ever was to me.
@PuppetMaster I mean Space Marine is a GoW clone, it lacks the cover system sure and its very melee focused but its clear GoW was what they borrowed from most.
Nice, these games will be wishlisted for the eventual price reduction in a few months time.
@DennisReynolds @PuppetMaster
Ah, but then you go down the rabbit hole of who REALLY copied who.
I'm not yet convinced with SH 2. Bloober haven't made anything that I've liked. So will wait for more concrete reviews.
It's cool to see SH2 and Metaphor do well with Famitsu.
Does SH2's embargo lift on Friday?
@Nei Wished they would've gone with the painted art style similar to the menus for the whole game (except the cutscenes) instead.
@DennisReynolds You mean GoW blatantly copied:
And Space Marine 1 doesn't focus on melee considering there's like 10 guns and 4 melee weapons.
@The_Wailing_Doom I bet there's plenty of people who thinks GoW is very original as if it doesn't copied from anything haha 😆
Just picked up a copy of this issue as a souvenir before my trip to Japan ends - can’t wait to play SH2 now! Roll on Tuesday!
The demo for fantazio was very underwhelming for me. All style over substance. But then i am one of those who dont get the persona 5 hype (God what a boring drawn out game)
I was pretty hard on Bloober and was a big detractor of the decision to allow them to do the remake. If this turns out good, I will never have been more happy to eat my words. I don't put much stock in Famitsu by itself, but other preview footage and impressions have been really positive as well. I'm excited and will give it a go.
If it's good, let them have Silent Hill 3 and 4 and maybe eventually a new entry.
I didn't know it's out. I need to get it soon, but I still haven't finished persona 3. Once I finish persona 3, I'll get metaphor.
Going to rent silent hill....never played the originals...so I can't pretend to be outraged
Preordered both so review scores are meaningless
@PuppetMaster Name a game that plays exactly like GoW prior to GoW.
@DennisReynolds You never played Kill Switch or RE 4?
@PuppetMaster You never played Gears of War?
