Sacrificing his body to save Mankind from his heretical "son", Horus, the immortal Emperor of Mankind takes a dim view of treachery and sedition. In a stealth release overnight, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's Update 4.0 added a new difficulty, a fresh co-op Operation to undertake, and made sweeping balancing changes. But in a worrying sign that the honeymoon might be over, the inevitable first grumblings have begun, with developer Saber Interactive getting some pushback from heretics who have questioned this Imperial mandate, suffering a wave of negative user reviews as a result.
IGN delves more deeply into the specific, nerdy changes that some players don't like, and much like Helldivers 2, a lot of the ire seems to be directed at the game getting harder. There's the new Lethal difficulty (and the others have been tweaked), but crucially, the popular fencing class of weapon has had its generous, perfect parry window halved (melee weapons capable of blocking like the chainsword can't perfect parry). In conjunction, the Tactical Marine's Auspex Scan ability has had its bonus damage neutered by 30%, which will definitely make those already tough bosses much harder.
As you can see in the lovely graph below, it wasn't enough to shift the needle, but Space Marine 2 received nearly 500 negative reviews overnight, and the vast majority of those we viewed mentioned Update 4.0 and Helldivers 2 specifically. On Reddit, players have been venting their collective spleen, leading to various colourful threads.
What do you think of the changes made to Space Marine 2? Will you put your total, unflinching faith in Saber Interactive and blindly trust that the developer knows best? Or are you some kind of heretic? Let us know in the comments section below.

Every time I read angry comments it always makes it seem like the devs are cackling, purposefully nerfing the thing YOU enjoy to make you SUFFER.
It's also funny how people were parading this game about as their "anti-DEI champion" only to turn around and snap of it's head...over nerfs. Really vitriolic.

Gosh, another whiny community. Steam needs to do something to stop review bombing. Legitimate feedback should go through the proper channels.
@DonJorginho
Crybaby lefties? What is wrong with you?
@The_Wailing_Doom Pretty sure they were clowning on the narrative around the game.
Is this a multi-player thing I'm too single player to understand?
I remember a time when we just moved on if a game wasn't fun anymore. Now there seem to be whole campaigns to change slight things about them -.-'
So, is this means fighting games also got review bomb on PC / Steam every time a new balance patch come out?
Like clock work
I don't know if 500 negative reviews (even overnight) that actually pertain to the gameplay, when the game has over 78,000 reviews that average "very positive", counts as review bombing. A small number of people are expressing dissatisfaction with gameplay changes - let's not throw around buzzwords we don't understand. I've not even played this game so I'm not saying this because I'm annoyed by the changes, by the way.
@DonJorginho Bless your heart
I hate nerfs that just make games less fun. If I have a giant death ray and it becomes a laser pointer for ‘balance’ then it rubs me up the wrong way. Screw balance when it comes to single-player games, create the most fun set of tools possible instead.
@GymratAmarillo So you're saying "the FGC", the whole community, is a giant entitled a*hole? Lol.
I know some level headed people who plays fighting games on PC and they wouldn't waste their time review bombing the game if the patch nerfed their main or changed the mechanics. They'll complaint a bit but they will moved on to other characters or just adapt.
@The_Wailing_Doom that’s what the grifters on socials call them, it’s hilarious seeing as they’re the only crybabies.
(In case it wasn’t clear enough I’m using that language sarcastically against those who have those genuine beliefs)
@MobyD
Sad little entitled children
Game releases.
Community work out what works best.
A sizeable number of players use what works best.
Developers review player stats and see a large number of players using the same class and figure class must be too strong.
Developers adjust balance, nerfing what works best in the process.
Players cry.
Developers needs to stand their ground against pathetic whiners. They need to stop catering to these tantrums. Balancing a game is tricky and it takes time. Maybe if they were any good at the game they would just adapt.
Why do some devs like to mess with pve content, just let the player have fun with it 😕
Expected from teenagers surely? if they are adults then it's rather embarassing no?
Played the new mission last night and didn't really notice much of a difference at all relating to difficulty. I was just having fun
Who would have known the game community is garbage. He people it's all Sony fault nah it's not it's the community.
@PuppetMaster
No because fighting games are multiplayer games, you need to balance those constantly.
When it comes to PVE games, nerfing is always the wrong answer. If things aren't playing the way you envisioned then you need to either tweak the setting to steer the game towards the ideal gameplay without touching the things your fanbase loves or you need to embrace the new powerfantasy the players found and go ham on it.
@CielloArc Nerfing overpowered weapons and buff underused / underpowered weapons to make more balance-varied gameplay doesn't sounds like a wrong answer to me.
It's actually feels similar to fighting games where devs nerfed top tier characters that overtuned then buffed low-mid tier characters that needs help so more people wants to try those low-mid tier characters and also keeps the meta fresh.
It is always sad when developers start to poke in balance. Why they just cannot game to live? I'll never understand this...
@ATaco the venn diagram of gamers who review bomb and gamers who complain about DEI is a circle.
I question these kind of peoples lives or lack of one
Never have I once thought ...that decision in a game annoys me so I'm gonna go cry about it and leave an overly negative review
This could be avoided by balancing your game, you know, actually finishing it, before release.
I never understand the heavy nerfing of PVE games. Let people enjoy the game instead 🤷.
HD2 was terrible for awhile but now it's actually playable again it's really quite enjoyable
Video game culture has gotten incredibly toxic, especially when it comes to the sickening practice of review bombing! These people will ruin review scores over trivial matters like required log ins or nerfing a weapon.
Review bombing is bad for everyone!
@PuppetMaster
Yeah, but fighting games are PVP games, you need to balance stuff and nerf things that get abused because other players will feel cheated otherwise.
This is a PVE game, instead of nerfing an overpowered weapon you can ask your fanbase why they don't pick X/Y/Z weapon instead. I think Halo or CoD had a similar problem with a sniper weapon couple of years ago, turns out that damage wasn't the only problem, the whole feel of said weapon was underwhelming, the company fixed some animations and sfx and that sniper became a meta weapon.
The game needs buffs, not nerfs! The game is already hard.At least make the nerfs only apply to the hardest difficulty level.
I've nearly finished my 100% run on normal of Outer Worlds Spacer's Choice and it was ridiculously easy, I was one shotting stuff for a while. Still had a great time. Was going to pick this up next week, but it sounds like a lot of nerds will make this a pain. I'll await further patches, I guess.
@MasterChiefWiggum it was a bad update , and the new armor system is awful, pushing players to play a style that is far too tightly focused and truly awful on some operations, like reliquary for example where players won't be close together.
@djlard That's development changing up things.
Post patch the game is considerably less fun. Weapons have been heavily nerfed/enemies made spongier and they have reduced the ammo box amounts to the point where you’ll frequently run out of ammo. Party windows have been reduced, the chain sword can’t perfect parry anymore and the mobs are more frequent and much bigger.
There’s also been an odd change to the visuals, some weird saturation thing or contrast change and the game does look worse than before.
There’s a vignette at the corners of the screen that also doesn’t help the aesthetic.
It’s not like this was an especially easy game to begin with. I played with 2 friends and we all have +30 hours and couldn’t finish the new operations map on normal difficulty.
I know gamers like to moan but this is a real fun stripping patch. They added a new difficulty level which is great if you want a hardcore challenge but most of the adjustments affect every threat/difficulty level. It’s just amazing that they thought this would go down well with the average player base.
@Flaming_Kaiser But who cares THEY want to change it?
Nobody likes being made weaker, but just release new enemies that have strengths against the class you think is overpowered and everything is fine. Of course that’s a lot more work, and costs more, so they’d rather piss people off in the hope those that stay make up for it with more grinding hours.
@McBurn
That was a time before a dev could come into the game you paid money for and change it to be something else, with no recourse to refund. In that situation I can understand people being annoyed (in theory, it’s never happened to me, mainly because I’m a single player guy).
@djlard A small vocal minority as always.
@Flaming_Kaiser So they listen to small vocal minority? What about huge quiet majority?
