SEGA’s not really being secretive about the reason behind its Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii release date change. In a video message, anchored by director Masayoshi Yokoyama, he admitted that the new 21st February launch will allow you to “play the game that comes after it with peace of mind”. That game is Monster Hunter Wilds, due out on 28th February.
While it’s bold to assume fans will be able to beat a Yakuza title in a week, we suppose this spin-off story will be shorter than a mainline entry, as was the case with Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Still, it seems like there will be an (infinite) wealth of things to do, including customising your pirate ship and engaging in naval combat.

To be fair, Yokoyama also notes development is progressing more smoothly than expected, so that’s another good reason to bring the release date forward. He says the developer wants to get the game into the hands of fans as soon as possible.
Remember, February will also plot the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, so it’s shaping up to be a huge month for new PS5 games. How will you be managing your time? Share your schedule in the comments section below.

I think we can all appreciate the honesty, and it's a good move for everyone involved.
Well done SEGA on just being sensible.
Too honest response, won't buy
More likely that they've learned their lesson after releasing their Sonic Superstars game in the same week as Super Mario Wonder last year
No doubt I'll still be on Metaphor by that point tbh 🫣
Uhhhhh someone needs to tell RGG that normal, working people can't finish their behemoth games in one week lol
I was always going to play Wilds with peace of mind, though.
This, meanwhile, I still won't play at all.
But I don't like Monster Hunter...and now I only have one week to finish Trails through Daybreak 2 before Yakuza comes out...plus there's AC Shadows too...
What about my needs!?😄
Yeah not sure what difference 1 week makes. I would guess a lot of people would only have time/money for one of these games in that short period of time. 3 to 4 weeks would make more sense.
@crossbit I'm not sure this is going for the same audience, anyway. The MH audience has become more "CODified," if you will...
Ubisoft; 'after 8 years and numerous delays, we have finally released a bare bones pirate ship simulator with dreadful monetization'
RGG Studio; '***** it, we ball - side-game we threw together quickly, including naval combat plus everything else found in a Yakuza/LAD game now comes out a week early'
Can these guys get any more goated holy ****
Crap! I'm stuck in Ground Hog day, destined to relive the same article again and again 😮
Props to RGG Studio for seeing it and moving the game up a week.
@Korgon Lol, I’m not into Like a Dragon or Monster Hunter, so what about my needs too? I need something else to release!
But seriously though, came in to say that this is such a classy move on Sega’s part. Even if these gigantic sized games aren’t for me, I think it’s cool that they’re acknowledging each other and being friendly. Great to see in the industry since we know things tend to be a bit more aggressive between companies.
I will be buying both day 1. I have faith that both companies will deliver.
Horizon devs take note
@RBMango what if your job was playing games? Could you do it in a week do you think?
Still only interested in this one though.
@Korgon yeah you can stick monster hunter where the sun don’t shine.
@Golem25 for all we know it could be 💩
I never gotten into the yakuza games... now I want to. Definitely playing monster hunter wilds first day though.
This is one of those decisions where it's not about being able to play the game in a week, it's about the fact that most of Japan will shut down when MHW launches so there's no hope for any other game to sell.
@riceNpea i could do it in five minutes.... a week you say😳🤭
@code45709 and that's after doing it once and having a break!
@Member_the_game yet they're releasing Sonic X Shadow Generations on the same day as Black Ops 6 🤣
@LikelySatan No, if anything, the Yakuza franchise is "CODified" with its yearly releases and reused assets.
@Golem25 agree! While everyone ends up delaying or released unfished buggy games, here comes RGG with all their swagger bringing forward their release dates.
Probably helps they only announce games that are near release, rather than announcing them 3 years prior to release cough square Enix cough
@Markatron84
When will they learn 🤣🤣🤣
@LowDefAl Never heard that. Zelda sold 3.84 million copies in one month. We only have stats on Zero Dawn for two weeks at 2.6 million copies.
Meanwhile Zelda was the 5th best selling game of 2017. Horizon didn't make it into the top 10.
@Artois2 That's where Yakuza now belongs, where the sun doesn't shine lol. The series is burnt out...
@riceNpea doctor told me i should keep hydrated so i need the break. Then i had my doctors appointment 🤭
@code45709 your doctor should get struck off. And then he should be sacked.
...and then lose his job
@riceNpea hes been given the sack before but it didn't clear anything up🤭
@LowDefAl BotW and Elden Ring outsold both Horizon games and there wasn't anything stopping Guerrilla from bringing Horizon FW forward. I'm not heavily invested in the matter though, I just think its funny as a meme.
Horizon stans are adorable
This is always great for people like me. Love me some Yakuza/LAD and couldn't care less about Monster Hunter, now I also get my game a week early... Thanks Monster Hunter 👌 🤣
MH is a long term commitment so makes sense to play this first anyway.
@Korgon good look finishing a trails game in a week. That's usually the length of one mid game cutscene 🤣
Same as Yoshi-P setting FFXIV Dawntrail to after Shadow of The Erdtree...
@PorkChopExpress Monster Hunter's a hard franchise to get into but once it sets its claws in you it'll be with you forever
@TruestoryYep yeah it ha definitely went down hill
Can't wait to play this game.
